The first enantioselective Friedel–Crafts alkylation of indoles and pyrroles with 3‐hydroxy‐3‐indolyloxindoles to access two novel types of 3,3‐diaryloxindoles catalyzed by chiral imidodiphosphoric acids has been reported. A range of quaternary carbon centered 3,3‐diaryloxindoles were synthesized in high yield (up to >99%) with excellent enantioselectivity (up to 98% ee) at low catalyst loadings (as low as 0.5 mol%). The Friedel–Crafts reaction between indoles and 3‐hydroxy‐3‐indolyloxindoles is amenable to gram scale syntheses.

The iron(III) chloride‐multicatalyzed dioxygenation of enamides with TEMPO in the presence of alcohols has been developed. This multicomponent domino process affords efficient new strategies for the synthesis of α‐oxy‐N‐acylhemiaminals or α‐oxyimides in good to excellent yields under mild conditions.

The asymmetric synthesis of a set of hydroxyphenyl γ‐valerolactones was achieved starting from 2‐silyloxyfuran and alkoxy‐substituted benzaldehydes as common precursors. Key synthesis steps included an enantioselective vinylogous Mukaiyama aldol reaction and a Barton–McCombie deoxygenation. Five enantioenriched γ‐valerolactone targets were obtained in 5–6 steps, 18–63% overall yields and 82–98 % ee, paving the way for the straightforward entry to this class of biologically effective and poorly available flavan‐3‐ol metabolites. In parallel, an unprecedented one‐pot reductive ring expansion process was fortuitously discovered, yielding racemic δ‐lactone analogues from phenolic butanolide precursors.

A novel method has been developed for the synthesis of 3‐pyrrolines from β‐ketopropargylamines via a 5‐endodig carbocyclization. This transformation involves a silver‐catalyzed Conia‐ene type reaction tolerating broad substrate scope with good to excellent yields. Furthermore, this methodology has been extended for the construction of 2‐substituted pyrroles under base‐mediated conditions.

A quinine‐derived thiourea catalysed the enantioselective addition of 4‐substituted pyrazolones to isatin‐derived ketimines, providing a variety of aminooxindole‐pyrazolone adducts containing congested vicinal tetrasubstituted stereocentres with excellent outcomes (up to 98% yield, >20:1 dr and 98% ee).

An efficient intramolecular arene‐alkene oxidative coupling of 1,4‐diaryl‐1,3‐butadienes has been developed involving the use of a 2,3‐dichloro‐5,6‐dicyano‐para‐benzoquinone (DDQ)/acid catalyst. The reaction involves the generation of a radical cation by abstraction of an electron from the substrate with DDQ, an intramolecular Friedel–Crafts‐type reaction, and the loss of hydrogen radical.

A practically simple and direct α‐alkylation of unactivated ketones using benzylic alcohols has been achieved. The in situ formed acetals are the key for the success of the reaction. The catalyst, silver hexafluoroantimonate(V) (AgSbF6) provides double activation by converting the ketone into an enol ether via acetal and generation of carbocationic center at the benzylic position of the benzylic alcohol. The alcohols include benzylic propargyl alcohols, cinnamyl alcohols, and diarylmethanols.

Zinc‐catalyzed 1,4‐oxofluorinations of 3‐en‐1‐ynamides with Selectfluor in acetonitrile/water proceeded with high regio‐ and stereoselectivity, giving E‐configured γ‐fluoro‐α,β‐unsaturated amides efficiently. Our control experiments indicate that kinetically unstable C‐bound zinc dienolates are chemically reactive to undergo SE2′‐electrophilic fluorinations whereas the detectable O‐bound dienolates preferably undergo protodemetalation reactions instead.

We have developed a new strategy for palladium‐catalyzed arylation reactions with triazolopyridines, wherein two different chemical transformations (C‐3 vs. C‐7) are observed by differentiating the substrates using different bases. The reactive palladium carbenoids were directly generated from triazolopyridines and underwent denitrogenative arylations with aryl bromides. Intriguingly, when potassium carbonate was replaced with potassium tert‐butoxide, direct C H arylation occurred at the most acidic position (C‐7). Moreover, two different catalytic arylation events were successfully performed in a one‐pot sequence, providing a convenient access to 6‐aryl‐2‐α‐styrylpyridines.

A straightforward approach for the chemodivergent synthesis of quinolines is described through site‐selective coupling of ortho‐aminoaryl ketones with α‐enolic dithioesters (DTEs) under solvent‐free conditions. The operationally and user‐simple one‐pot methodology is based on the trifunctional nature of DTEs. Both the carbonyl and the thiocarbonyl moiety in α‐enolic dithioesters were employed for the efficient construction of three differently substituted quinolines in a chemoselective manner simply by variation of an easy to handle acid catalyst.

A triphenylphosphine‐catalyzed cascade reaction of unsaturated pyrazolones with dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates or but‐3‐yn‐2‐one to synthesize the bioactive pyrano[2,3‐c]pyrazoles in moderate to excellent yields has been developed. Meanwhile, spiro‐cyclopentanone‐pyrazolones were also first constructed by the triphenylphosphine‐catalyzed cascade reaction of unsaturated pyrazolones with 4‐phenylbut‐3‐yn‐2‐one in moderate to good yields.

Aryl α‐diimine derivatives have been used, for the first time, as efficient new ligands for the palladium‐catalyzed oxidative bis‐alkoxycarbonylation reaction of olefins. The most active catalyst was formed in situ from bis(9‐anthryl)‐2,3‐dimethyl‐1,4‐diazabutadiene and palladium(II) trifluoroacetate [Pd(TFA)2]. This catalytic system was able to selectively convert olefins into succinic diesters in good yields (up to 97%) and low catalyst loading (up to 0.5 mol%) under mild reaction conditions [4 bar of carbon monoxide (CO) at 20 °C in the presence of p‐toluenesulphonic acid as additive and p‐benzoquinone as oxidant]. The optimized conditions could be successfully applied to both aromatic and aliphatic olefins, by using methanol, benzyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol as nucleophiles.

A sequential one‐pot synthesis of Michael adducts of aroylmethylidenemalonates with activated aromatics is described. The method involves treatment of trans‐2‐aryl‐3‐nitro‐cyclopropane‐1,1‐dicarboxylates with boron trifluoride etherate to form aroylmethylidenemalonates in situ and then addition of activated aromatics such as indoles, carbazole, pyrrole, thiophenes, methoxybenzenes and benzodioxole followed by a catalytic amount of indium(III) triflate to the same reaction vessel. To prove the synthetic potential of the resulting Michael adducts, one of the adducts was transformed into a pharmaceutically interesting dihydropyridazinone derivative.

An enantioselective organocatalytic addition of nitroalkanes to oxindolylideneindolenines in the presence of bifunctional organocatalysts has been established to provide an efficient entry to 3,3‐disubstituted oxindole derivatives in high yields and with excellent enantioselectivities. The transformation has been applied to the preparation of the key intermediate for a formal total synthesis of (+)‐gliocladin C.
