Twenty-four veal calves were stunned with a captive bolt. Twelve calves were shackled by the left, the other twelve by the right hindleg. Approximately 1 min after sticking, six carcasses of each of these subgroups were stimulated electrically with equipment relying on a combined high (3000 V, 0·83 pulses s(-1), 1·5 ms duration) and low 35 V, 14 pulsess(-1)) voltage action. The remaining carcasses were left unharmed. At 24 h post-mortem hindquarters were boned to commercial primal cuts. Surrounding connective tissue and cut-up surfaces of primals as well as certain locations vulnerable for blood splash were further dissected. Neither electrical stimulation nor shackling by either of the hindlegs significantly affected the prevalence and severity of blood splash. Post-mortem factors promoting blood splash and possibly related to electrical stimulation and shackling are discussed. At 7 days post-mortem the sensory meat quality was assessed. In general, electrical stimulation did not significantly affect waterbinding and colour characteristics in longissimus (M. longissimus dorsi) and semimembranosus samples. Sarcomere lengths were similar in stimulated and control groups in longissimus but not in semimembranosus muscle. In both muscles shear force values were lower after electrical stimulation. In general, neither longissimus nor semimembranosus samples excised ipsilaterally from the shackled leg side exhibited differences in tenderness and sarcomere length. The effects of time of boning and storage period on creatine kinase (CK) activity, transmission value, drip losses and water-holding capacity (WHC) measured by various methods was investigated. At 40 min post-mortem 30 pig carcasses with pH values > 6·2 in the loin were selected. The right loin of each carcass was hot boned and vacuum packaged immediately. The left loin was cold boned and packaged after overnight chilling at 2 ± 2°C. After 1, 5 and 12 days of storage at 0 ± 1°C, 10 hot- and cold-boned loins were unpacked and sampled. Time of boning did not affect drip losses. At 1 day post-mortem the CK activity was higher in hot- than in cold-boned pork. Sarcomere lengths were not affected by time of boning. The WHC was investigated by two controlled methods. A filter-paper press method was not sensitive enough to assess differences in WHC of hot- vs cold-boned pork. The results of a gravimetric method depended on the sample location. Results of the gravimetric test decreased with increasing storage periods. The results suggest that under the experimental conditions the chilling rates of hot-boned vs carcass-attached muscles were similar. 相似文献

Gynoparous female and male damson-hop aphids, Phorodon humuli (Schrank), were caught in the field by water traps that were releasing the sex pheromone of this species, (1RS,4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactol. No behavioral activity was elicited by (4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactone, the major sex pheromone component of other aphid species such as Megoura viciae Buckton, even though olfactory cells were found in the secondary rhinaria on the third antennal segment of P. humuli that responded strongly to this compound. Gynoparous female P. humuli in the field responded less strongly to (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol, the sex pheromone of the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), than they did to the (4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactols, but males responded only to the latter. The (4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactone showed no electrophysiological activity so was not used in field trials. Releasing either the (4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactone or the (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol with the (4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactols did not inhibit the response of P. humuli gynoparous females and males to the latter. Males of R. padi responded as strongly to the (4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactols as they did to (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol. Males of P. humuli and R. padi responded positively to an increased concentration of the (4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactols released from two vials compared with that from a single vial, as did P. humuli (in one of two experiments) and R. padi to the (1RS,4aR,7S,7aS)- and (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactols when released together. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of side holes on the predicted von Mises stress levels in cervical spinal fusion cages subjected to compressive loading. Models with between zero and ten side holes were developed. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to simulate compression of the cage, made from the polymer PEEK (polyetheretherketone), between two adjacent vertebrae. The analyses were validated by experimental tests. In all of the models, the von Mises stress was highest at the cage-vertebrae interface with peak stresses of between 14 and 18 MPa. Increasing the Young's modulus of the vertebrae from 12 to 30 GPa increased the peak stress on average by 29 per cent. The stresses in the models were lower than the compressive strength of PEEK (118 MPa), and are well within the PEEK fatigue strength reported (60 MPa at 10 million cycles). This study suggests that the number of side holes had a negligible effect on the stress distribution within the cage; the stress magnitudes were fairly constant across all of the models and did not change substantially with the number of holes. In sulfate-reducing reactors, it has been reported that the sulfate removal efficiency increases when the COD/SO4(2-) ratio is increased. The start-up of a down-flow fluidized bed reactor constitutes an important step to establish a microbial community in the biofilm able to survive under the operational bioreactor conditions in order to achieve effective removal of both sulfate and organic matter. In this work the influence of COD/SO4(2-) ratio and HRT in the development of a biofilm during reactor start-up (35 days) was studied. The reactor was inoculated with 1.6 g VSS/L of granular sludge, ground low density polyethylene was used as support material; the feed consisted of mineral medium at pH 5.5 containing 1 g COD/L (acetate:lactate, 70:30) and sodium sulfate. Four experiments were conducted at HRT of 1 or 2 days and COD/SO4(2-) ratio of 0.67 or 2.5. The results obtained indicated that a COD/SO4(2-) ratio of 2.5 and HRT 2 days allowed high sulfate and COD removal (66.1 and 69.8%, respectively), whereas maximum amount of attached biomass (1.9 g SVI/L support) and highest sulfate reducing biofilm activity (10.1 g COD-H2S/g VSS-d) was achieved at HRT of 1 day and at COD/sulfate ratios of 0.67 and 2.5, respectively, which suggests that suspended biomass also played a key role in the performance of the reactors. 相似文献
