Landscape scale vegetation-type conversion and fire hazard in the San Francisco bay area open spaces
Successional pressures resulting from fire suppression and reduced grazing have resulted in vegetation-type conversion in the open spaces surrounding the urbanized areas of the San Francisco bay area. Coverage of various vegetation types were sampled on seven sites using a chronosequence of remote images in order to measure change over time. Results suggest a significant conversion of grassland to shrubland dominated by Baccharis pilularison five of the seven sites sampled. An increase in Pseudotsuga menziesii coverage was also measured on the sites where it was present. Increases fuel and fire hazard were determined through field sampling and use of the FARSITE fire area simulator. A significant increase in biomass resulting from succession of grass-dominated to shrub-dominated communities was evident. In addition, results from the FARSITE simulations indicated significantly higher fire-line intensity, and flame length associated with shrublands over all other vegetation types sampled. These results indicate that the replacement of grass dominated with shrub-dominated landscapes has increased the probability of high intensity fires. 相似文献

An approach for determining the biodegradability of new detergent builders under activated sludge conditions was investigated using carboxymethyltartronate (CMT) as a representative material. Preliminary biodegradation studies in river water and activated sludge indicated a 4–8 week period before acclimation to and biodegradation of CMT. More detailed studies in continuous flow activated sludge units established that acclimation to CMT degradation was not readily lost upon CMT starvation, could be maintained at low temperatures and under conditions of variable organic loading, and was unaffected by the presence of a variety of metal ions. The laboratory evaluation of CMT, which stressed the use of natural sewage/activated sludge systems in place of tests employing commercially available laboratory media, would predict CMT to be satisfactorily removed in full-scale activated sludge waste treatment plants. 相似文献

Surveillance on the Spokane River and its tributaries has shown that a major source of nutrients influencing the eutrophication of Long Lake was the effluent of the Spokane primary sewage treatment plant. Existing concentrations of nitrate nitrogen and orthophosphate increased threefold and tenfold, respectively, below the effluent. Of the influent phosphate phosphorus, 19 per cent was retained in the reservoir.A density current system was evident in Long Lake which altered vertical and longitudinal distribution of physical and chemical parameters. This current isolated a wedge of water on the reservoir bottom which became anaerobic. For at least two decades, expansion of low-density residential development at the wildland–urban interface has been widely recognized as a primary factor influencing the management of US national forests. We estimate the location, extent, and trends in expansion of the wildland–urban interface (WUI) in the continental United States. We mapped the WUI by determining the intersection of housing density classes computed from refined US Census data with a map of wildfire hazards based on broad forest types using definitions of WUI from the Federal Register. Our methods allowed us to provide a more spatially precise estimation of the WUI that better reflects development patterns of interest to forest land managers. We defined three wildfire hazard classes based on vegetation type. “High” severity applies to vegetation types in which stand-replacing fires dominate both historical and recent fire regimes, e.g., lodgepole pine forest. “Low” severity applies where fuels and climate foster mostly low-intensity fires, e.g., aspen-birch forest. “High (historically low or variable)” applies to vegetation types in which fires historically were of low or variable intensity, but recently have often burned at high intensity because of a century of fire exclusion, e.g., southwestern ponderosa pine forest. In 2000, the WUI that includes a 3.2 km community protection zone occupied 465,614 km2, and contained over 12.5 million housing units. This is an expansion of over 52% from 1970, and by 2030 the WUI is likely to expand to at least 513,670 km2 with the greatest expansion occurring in the intermountain west states. Roughly 89% of the WUI is privately owned land and about 65% of the WUI occurs in high or high (historically low or variable) severity fire regime classes. 相似文献

Landscape and law cross-influence each other. Legal rules shape landscapes, while landscapes shape the culture from which rules emerge. In describing this interplay, landscape can seem passive, as a canvas on which laws paint visions of society; or active, as a matrix for the creation of law and culture. An alternative view is suggested: landscapes are opportunities for action, fields within which individuals interact with context in a mutually adaptive relationship. Lawyers are specialized constituents of this adaptation. Lawyers' acts and practices help to constitute the adaptations that shape a given landscape. A teaching module in which it was sought to prompt law students to become aware of the adaptive role of lawyering in landscape is described. The results suggest useful theoretical and methodological insights into landscape as a field of human activity, and the need for further study of lawyering as a force in the construction of landscape. 相似文献
