Content distribution networks (CDNs) improve scalability and reliability, by replicating content to the “edge” of the Internet. Apart from the pure networking issues of the CDNs relevant to the establishment of the infrastructure, some very crucial data management issues must be resolved to exploit the full potential of CDNs to reduce the “last mile” latencies. A very important issue is the selection of the content to be prefetched to the CDN servers. All the approaches developed so far, assume the existence of adequate content popularity statistics to drive the prefetch decisions. Such information though, is not always available, or it is extremely volatile, turning such methods problematic. To address this issue, we develop self-adaptive techniques to select the outsourced content in a CDN infrastructure, which requires no apriori knowledge of request statistics. We identify clusters of “correlated” Web pages in a site, called Web site communities, and make these communities the basic outsourcing unit. Through a detailed simulation environment, using both real and synthetic data, we show that the proposed techniques are very robust and effective in reducing the user-perceived latency, performing very close to an unfeasible, off-line policy, which has full knowledge of the content popularity.  相似文献

Fatigue cracking occurs at the copes of stringer–floorbeam connections of older, riveted steel bridges. Some cracks are quite long and raise serious questions regarding the remaining fatigue life of the subject bridges. Damage limitation methods (DLMs) have been used to increase the fatigue life of these stringers, but the effectiveness of the DLMs for these riveted connections had never been evaluated by tests. Therefore, tests were conducted to evaluate the fatigue life of coped, riveted stringer–floorbeam connections, and the effectiveness of DLMs. Fatigue cracks in the coped stringer–floorbeam connection were initially developed to establish crack initiation requirements and the rate and extent of crack growth. Once a significant crack was noted, one of several DLMs was applied, and the specimens were retested to determine the effectiveness of the DLM in controlling cracking. These DLMs included the drilled hole, the inserted bolt and the removed rivet methods. The relative effectiveness of the methods is described, and a design procedure is proposed for improving their performance.  相似文献

The processing of nanosized powders to produce dense components is a difficult task, mainly due to the strong agglomeration of nanoparticles. In this work, deagglomeration studies were carried out on sol–gel‐derived γ‐alumina suspensions through the addition of dispersant or dispersant in combination with ethylene glycol as binder and the proper wet ball‐milling. For this purpose, zeta‐potential, viscosity, and sedimentation studies were carried out, whereas dilatometric studies accompanied by XRD analyses were performed on the powders derived from the most stable suspensions. Sintering studies followed and the as received ceramics were evaluated by SEM. The optimum stabilization was achieved through the synergistic addition of 2.75 mg/g ammonium polymethacrylate with 1 wt% ethylene glycol. The respective powder, although it indicates a shift of the sintering start to higher temperature, leads to the densest ceramic with the finest (500 nm mean grain size) and the most homogeneous microstructure.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of firing cycle on a dental porcelain microstructure in order to correlate microstructure changes with mechanical and thermal properties. A commercial low-fusing dental porcelain powder (Omega 900, Vita) was investigated for this purpose. The powder was treated at different temperatures in the range 750–1000 °C. The fired samples were characterized in terms of their morphology and microstructure, and their mechanical and thermal properties were evaluated. The results showed that firing temperature affects porcelain microstructure influencing significantly in this way both the mechanical properties and the thermal expansion coefficient of the fired objects. Firing at 800 °C led to a homogeneous structure. After treatment at this temperature, the leucite crystals exhibit their maximum concentration and they are well dispersed into the glassy phase. As a consequence the optimum mechanical strength and the maximum thermal expansion coefficient are observed in these samples.  相似文献

The effect of CeO2, La2O3 and ZrO2 structural stabilizers/promoters, in the form of CexZryLazOδ mixed oxides, on the catalytic performance and thermal stability of monometallic (Pt), monolithic-type, Al2O3-washcoated three-way catalytic converters (TWCs) was investigated under simulated exhaust conditions. The evolution of textural, structural and surface behavior of CexZryLazOδ modified TWCs were identified by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and appropriately correlated with the catalytic behavior and thermal stability of TWCs.  相似文献

Local community detection is a widely used method for identifying groups of nodes starting from seeding nodes. The seed(s) are usually selected either randomly or based only on structural properties of the network. However, in many cases the choice of seed(s) incorporates external knowledge that attaches to these nodes an additional importance for their community. This knowledge, may be derived from an expert on the domain, or may arise from the network’s side information and it constitutes our motivation for the present work; this additional information about the importance of seed(s) can be exploited for detection of better and more relevant communities. We call such biased seed(s), hint(s). Our approach, is to reflect the importance of hints by changing appropriately the network in their vicinity. To the best of our knowledge, no such viewpoint of the seeding nodes in local community detection has been considered before. The aim of this study is to identify a single community which contains the hint(s). Our key contribution is the proposed Hint Enhancement Framework(HEF) that applies a two-step procedure to discover the community of the hint(s): 1) it changes the network by amplifying the hint(s) using re-weighting or re-wiring strategies so as to materialize the bias towards them and 2) it applies local community detection algorithms on the altered network of step 1. We experimentally evaluate HEF in synthetic and real datasets, and demonstrate the positive aspects of the framework in identifying better communities, in comparison with plain local community detection algorithms as well as a global one.

Holographic reprocessing (HR) facilitates holistic reappraisal of attributions regarding interpersonal violence and maltreatment. The authors tested the feasibility to train therapists to run a protocol using HR to reduce negative thoughts associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in women veterans who have had sexual trauma or abuse. The study assessed pre- and postscores on the Posttraumatic Cognitions Inventory (PTCI) in a naturalistic clinical setting with 5 therapists. The protocol consisted of screening for PTSD, followed by an average of 9 HR treatment sessions. Twenty-two women were referred to the study; 17 enrolled and completed treatment (0% dropout rate). Research has shown that spinal rats given shock to the hind leg when it is in an extended position (contingent shock) will learn to maintain a flexion response. However, subjects that experience shock irrespective of leg position (noncontingent shock) do not exhibit this learning. The current studies examined the role of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) in this learning deficit. Subjects were given intrathecal injections of CaMKII inhibitor solution or artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) 15 min prior to and immediately or 4 hr following noncontingent shock training. Results demonstrate that the CaMKII inhibitor successfully reversed the learning deficit when injected prior to and immediately following training. These results indicate the importance of CaMKII in the learning deficit present in spinal animals trained with noncontingent shock.
