In this paper we present Turk-2, a hybrid multi-modal chess player with a robot arm and a screen-based talking head. Turk-2 can not only play chess, but can see and hear the opponent, can talk to him and display emotions. We were interested to find out if a simple embodiment with human-like communication capabilities enhances the experience of playing chess against a computer. First, give an overview of the development road to multi-modal communication with computers. Then we motivate our research with a hybrid system, we introduce the architecture of Turk-2, we describe the human experiments and its evaluation. The results justify that multi-modal interaction makes game playing more engaging, enjoyable – and even more effective. These findings for a specific game situation provide yet another evidence of the power of human-like interaction in turning computer systems more attractive and easier to use. 相似文献

The dynamic facility layout problem (DFLP) aims to minimize the sum of handling and re-layout costs by devising an individual layout for each distinctive production period. It is a complex combinatorial optimization problem. This paper proposes a clonal selection algorithm (CSA) for DFLP. The algorithm is capable of being extended to more general cases although equal area machines and standardized handling equipments with identical unit costs are assumed for the time being. The performance of the proposed algorithm is examined by using three test problems from the literature. CSA reached the best known solutions–even found better solutions for large sized problems–in 88% of the instances, while each of the former methods was successful only in a small fraction of those 50 problems. CSA also outperformed all the present methods as regards solution times. 相似文献

The Morse-Smale complex is an efficient representation of the gradient behavior of a scalar function, and critical points paired by the complex identify topological features and their importance. We present an algorithm that constructs the Morse-Smale complex in a series of sweeps through the data, identifying various components of the complex in a consistent manner. All components of the complex, both geometric and topological, are computed, providing a complete decomposition of the domain. Every rendering process consists of two steps. The first is the computing of luminance values by methods like ray tracing or radiosity, and the second step is the mapping of the computed values to values appropriate for displaying. In the last years, as alternative to simple linear scaling which maps the average value to the medium luminance, some new ways of mapping were introduced. These new methods are based on photography analogies and on human vision models. All existing methods follow, implicitly or explicitly, the reflected light metering principle. The method introduced in this paper is the first that follows the incident light metering used in professional photography and in the movie industry. Actually the irradiances are measured using a set of diffusors, which are placed automatically in the scene, and a linear scale factor based on these measurements is used to map the computed radiances to the display device. The diffusors act as half space integrators, they collect the light energy from all half space directions. The light comes from the primary light sources, or it is the result of various interreflections. The newly introduced method reproduces original colors faithfully even for scenes with very low or very high average reflectivity. 相似文献

The human gut symbiont Lacticaseibacillus (L.) casei (previously Lactobacillus casei) is under intense research due to its wide range of immunomodulatory effects on the human host. Dendritic cells (DCs) are crucial players in the direct and indirect communication with lactobacilli in the gastrointestinal tract. Here, we demonstrate that human monocyte-derived DCs (moDCs) are able to engulf L. casei BL23, in which the intact bacterial cell wall and morphology have a key role. The absence of the bacterial cell-wall-degrading enzyme, Lc-p75, in L. casei cells causes remarkable morphological changes, which have important consequences in the phagocytosis of L. casei by moDCs. Our results showed that the Lc-p75 mutation induced defective internalization and impaired proinflammatory and T-cell-polarizing cytokine secretion by bacteria-exposed moDCs. The T helper (Th) 1 and Th17 cell activating capacity of moDCs induced by the mutant L. casei was consequently reduced. Moreover, inhibition of the phagocytosis of wild-type bacteria showed similar results. Taken together, these data suggested that formation of short bacterial chains helps to exert the potent immunomodulatory properties of L. casei BL23. 相似文献

Geography- and infrastructure-aware topology design methodology for broadband access networks (FTTx)
We present a topology design methodology for broadband (FTTx) access networks. The calculations are based on real geographic
data (digital maps) and infrastructural information of the targeted area, using detailed and realistic cost models in order
to provide results of practical interest. The developed heuristics offer low time consumption and nearly optimal solutions
for the highly complex problem of minimal cost network deployment, due to the properly chosen and customized heuristic algorithms
for the various network technologies. We review the specific properties of the FTTx network technologies, present a formal
representation of the problem including a detailed cost function and network model and discuss complexity issues. The various
solution techniques are presented along with case studies of real-life scenarios in order to show the potential of the methodology.
The developed heuristic algorithms offer an approximation of the optimum within 10–15%, while time consumption remains in
the range of a few minutes, even for large-scale scenarios with 10,000s of customers. Beyond topology design, the results
provided by these methods are useful for a preliminary CAPEX estimation and techno-economic comparison. 相似文献

The widespread use of wireless and mobile networks and devices requiresspecial programming techniques and solutions. The object request brokers ofmobile environments have to adopt these techniques and offer servicesdealing with the problems of mobility. Most of the existing object request brokers however were developed for fixed networks assuming reliable transport protocols (mostly TCP), while the mobile networks cannot offer high qualitytransport.In this paper we give an overview of the challenges and solutions in mobilecomputing and present our ORB(M) framework implementing services based onthe solutions. Extending the framework doesn't require the assistance of itsdevelopers, the user can implement application-specific semantic elementsand deploy various new methods bound to the process of remote invocation.The user can form arbitrary new invocation semantics based on these elementsand customise the invocation semantics used by a given method. Low-dimensional oscillators are a valuable model for the neuronal activity of isolated neurons. When coupled, the self-sustained oscillations of individual free oscillators are replaced by a collective network dynamics. Here, dynamical features of such a network, consisting of three electronic implementations of the Hindmarsh-Rose mathematical model of bursting neurons, are compared to those of a biological neural motor system, specifically the pyloric CPG of the crustacean stomatogastric nervous system. We demonstrate that the network of electronic neurons exhibits realistic synchronized bursting behavior comparable to the biological system. Dynamical properties were analyzed by injecting sinusoidal currents into one of the oscillators. The temporal bursting structure of the electronic neurons in response to periodic stimulation is shown to bear a remarkable resemblance to that observed in the corresponding biological network. These findings provide strong evidence that coupled nonlinear oscillators realistically reproduce the network dynamics experimentally observed in assemblies of several neurons. 相似文献

In this study, the photoelectrochemical behavior of electrodeposited FeNiOOH/Fe2O3/graphene nanohybrid electrodes is investigated, which has precisely controlled structure and composition. The photoelectrode assembly is designed in a bioinspired manner where each component has its own function: Fe2O3 is responsible for the absorption of light, the graphene framework for proper charge carrier transport, while the FeNiOOH overlayer for facile water oxidation. The effect of each component on the photoelectrochemical behavior is studied by linear sweep photovoltammetry, incident photon‐to‐charge carrier conversion efficiency measurements, and long‐term photoelectrolysis. 2.6 times higher photocurrents are obtained for the best‐performing FeNiOOH/Fe2O3/graphene system compared to its pristine Fe2O3 counterpart. Transient absorption spectroscopy measurements reveal an increased hole‐lifetime in the case of the Fe2O3/graphene samples. Long‐term photoelectrolysis measurements in combination with Raman spectroscopy, however, prove that the underlying nanocarbon framework is corroded by the photogenerated holes. This issue is tackled by the electrodeposition of a thin FeNiOOH overlayer, which rapidly accepts the photogenerated holes from Fe2O3, thus eliminating the pathway leading to the corrosion of graphene. 相似文献

The antifungal effects of 22 essential oils from Turkish spices, herbs and citrus peel on four foodborne moulds were evaluated for fungistatic and fungicidal activity. The most active oils were wild thyme (Thymus rariflorus L) and thyme (Thymus serpyllum L). Parsley (Penloselinum sativum Hoffin) and savory (Satureja hortensis L) oils were found to be the least active oils. Rhizopus sp displayed the greatest tolerance, and the most sensitive mould was Penicillium chrysogenum. Prolonged incubations reduced the fungistatic and fungicidal effects of oils. It was concluded that some oils may be useful as mould inhibitors at food additive levels. 相似文献
