Physical wavelets and radar: a variational approach to remotesensing

Physical wavelets are acoustic or electromagnetic waves, resulting from the emission of a time signal by a localized acoustic or electromagnetic source moving along an arbitrary trajectory in space. Thus, they are localized solutions of the wave equation or Maxwell's equations. Under suitable conditions, such wavelets can be used as “basis” functions, to construct general acoustic or electromagnetic waves. This gives a local alternative to the construction of such waves in terms of (nonlocal) plane waves, via Fourier transforms. We give a brief, self-contained introduction to physical wavelets, and apply them to remote sensing. We define the ambiguity functional, generalization of the radar and sonar ambiguity functions, which applies not only to wideband signals, but also to targets and radar platforms executing arbitrary nonlinear motions     

Growth structure investigation of MgF2 and NdF3 films grown by molecular beam deposition on CaF2(111) substrates

The growth structure of MgF₂ and NdF₃ films grown on polished CaF₂(111) substrates deposited by molecular beam deposition has been investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of microfractographical and surface replications as well as cross-sectional TEM, atomic force microscopy, packing density, and absorption measurements. It has been shown that by taking advantage of ultrahigh vacuum environments and a special stratification property of MgF₂ and NdF₃ films, the preparation of nanocrystalline films of high packing density and low optical absorption is possible at a substrate temperature of 425 K.     

Intelligent assistance for software development and maintenance

An environment is described, called Professor Marvel, that provides early error checking and answers questions about the program under development. The environment has a certain understanding of the systems being developed and how to use tools to produce software. It aids individual programmers and helps coordinate programming teams. The key components of Marvel are a database that stores data represented as objects, as in object-oriented languages, and a model of the development process that imposes a structure on programming activities. Marvel's support of insight and of opportunistic processing is discussed at length, as is the handling of side effects. A sample session is described     

An extension of the tearing instability theory to multiple loading parameters

The stability of a cracked, nonlinear component connected to an elastic structure and subjected to an arbitrary number of controlled loads or displacements, is discussed. First this is done with a general instability criterion expressed in terms of loads and displacements of the cracked part. Then general expressions for the tearing modulus are given for different loading situations. Finally the given equations are applied to SEN specimens under bending and tension.

Ceci est réalisé en faisant appel, en premier lieu, à un critère général d'instabilité exprimé en termes the sollicitation et de déplacement de la portion fissurée. Ensuite, on fournit des expressions générales pour le module d'arrachement, correspondant à diverses situations de mise en charge. Enfin, les équations obtenues sont appliquées à des éprouvettes à entaille latérale simple soumises à flexion et traction.

     

Cdc34 and the F-box protein Met30 are required for degradation of the Cdk-inhibitory kinase Swe1

Ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis controls the abundance of many cell cycle regulatory proteins. Recent work in Saccharomyces cerevisiae suggests that a complex consisting of Cdc53, Skp1, and a third component known as an F-box protein (termed SCF) in combination with Cdc34 specifically targets regulatory proteins for degradation, and that substrate specificity is likely to be mediated by the F-box subunit. A screen for genetic interactions with a cdc34 mutation yielded MET30, which encodes an F-box protein. MET30 is an essential gene required for cell cycle progression and met30 mutations interact genetically with mutations in SCF components. Furthermore, physical interactions between Met30, Cdc53, Cdc34, and Skp1 in vivo provide evidence for an SCFMet30 complex. We demonstrate the involvement of Met30 in the degradation of the Cdk-inhibitory kinase Swe1. Swe1 is stabilized in met30 mutants and GST-Met30 pull-down experiments reveal that Met30 specifically binds Swe1 in vivo. Furthermore, extracts prepared from cdc34 or met30 mutants are defective in polyubiquitination of Swe1. Taken together, these data suggest that SCF-mediated proteolysis may contribute to the regulation of entry into mitosis. Our data, in combination with previously published results, also provide evidence for distinct SCF complexes in vivo and support the idea that their F-box subunits mediate SCF substrate specificity.     

Darstellung komplexer Betriebsschlacken des LD-Verfahrens im Quasidreistoffsystem

Aus der Darstellung der Schlackenzusammensetzungen im Quasidreistoffsystem ist die Lage der Schlacken zur Kalksättigungslinie deutlich zu erkennen. Die Sublanzenschlacken lassen den Schlackenweg während der letzten Blasminuten erkennen, durch Bodenspülung und Nachspülen wird eine geringe Annäherung an die Kalksättigungslinie erreicht. Aus der Lage der Schlacken im Quasidreistoffsystem läßt sich der Einfluß der Temperatur auf den Verlauf der Kalksättigung entlang unterschiedlicher T-X-Schnitte bestimmen.     

Synthesis of transparent fluorocarbon elastomers: Effect of crosslinker type and electron beam irradiation level on physical and mechanical behavior

Saturated fluorocarbon elastomers are very resistant to chemical reactions, including those of a crosslinking nature. In order to study proper methods of preparing these materials, Viton GLT was mixed with various levels of trimethylol propane trimethacrylate, TMPTM, and triallyl isocyanurate, Diak #7. After molding, the materials were subjected to electron beam irradiation. The glass transition, rubbery modulus, viscoelastic behavior, and equilibrium swelling were used to characterize the materials as a function of crosslinker and irradiation level. In general, the modulus and gel fraction increased with both crosslinker content and irradiation level. Mixtures of both crosslinking monomers produced an unexpected synergism, yielding higher tensile strength, and earlier onset of gelation.     

Predictive Maintenance Management Using Sensor-Based Degradation Models

This paper presents a sensory-updated degradation-based predictive maintenance policy (herein referred to as the SUDM policy). The proposed maintenance policy utilizes contemporary degradation models that combine component-specific real-time degradation signals, acquired during operation, with degradation and reliability characteristics of the component's population to predict and update the residual life distribution (RLD). By capturing the latest degradation state of the component being monitored, the updating process provides a more accurate of the remaining life. With the aid of a stopping rule, maintenance routines are scheduled based on the most recently updated RLD. The performance of the proposed maintenance policy is evaluated using a simulation model of a simple manufacturing cell. Frequency of unexpected failures and overall maintenance costs are computed and compared with two other benchmark maintenance policies: a reliability-based and a conventional degradation-based maintenance policy (without any sensor-based updating).
