Solution conformation of the Pseudomonas syringae MSU 16H phytotoxic lipodepsipeptide Pseudomycin A determined by computer simulations using distance geometry and molecular dynamics from NMR data

Pseudomycin A is a cyclic lipodepsinonapeptide phytotoxin produced by a strain of the plant pathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas syringae. Like other members of this family of bacterial metabolites, it is characterised by a fatty acylated cyclic peptide with mixed chirality and lactonic closure. Several biological activities of Pseudomycin A are lower than those found for some of its congeners, a difference which might depend on the diverse number and distribution of charged residues in the peptide moiety. Hence, it was of interest to investigate its conformation in solution. After the complete interpretation of the two-dimensional NMR spectra, NOE data were obtained and the structure was determined by computer simulations, applying distance geometry and molecular dynamics procedures. The conformation of the large ring of Pseudomycin A in solution includes three rigid structural regions interrupted by three short flexible regions that act as hinges. The overall three-dimensional structure of the cyclic moiety is similar to that of previously studied bioactive lipodepsinonapeptides produced by other pseudomonads.     

Physiological and pathological factors influencing bovine alpha-lactalbumin and beta-lactoglobulin concentrations in milk

Bovine alpha-lactalbumin and beta-lactoglobulin concentrations were determined by radial immunodiffusion in 354 milk samples from uninfected and 98 samples from infected quarters from 42 Holstein-Friesian cows taken at 30, 150, and 270 days of lactation. alpha-Lactalbumin and beta-lactoglobulin concentrations were not affected by quarter location. The alpha-lactalbumin decreased at the end of lactation and in samples collected beyond second lactation. The beta-lactoglobulin concentration increased with stage of lactation. There was a positive correlation between alpha-lactalbumin and beta lactoglobulin (r = .12). Milk from uninfected quarters had mean alpha-lactalbumin and beta-lactoglobulin concentrations of 1.47 and 4.6 mg/ml, respectively. Milk from quarters infected by major pathogens or Corynebacterium bovis had less alpha-lactalbumin. Milk from quarters infected by minor pathogens had less beta-lactoglobulin. There was a negative correlation between alpha-lactalbumin concentration and somatic cell count (r = .31), which was amplified by infection status of quarters. No correlation was noted between somatic cell count and beta-lactoglobulin concentration when considered over the whole sampling period, but the correlation became negative in quarters infected by major pathogens.     

Prognostic value of determination of the presence and histologic grade of the intraductal component in invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast after conservative treatment

In recent years, breast-conserving therapy and radiation therapy have become an important treatment option for patients with stage I and II invasive breast cancer. The results of long-term retrospective studies have demonstrated that this treatment can provide a high level of local tumor control with satisfactory cosmetic results. Numerous studies have shown that the presence of extensive intraductal component (prominent intraductal carcinoma) is highly associated with subsequent local recurrence. In this article we have stressed the value of the determination of the presence and the histologic grade of prominent intraductal component of invasive ductal breast carcinoma in the determination of the extent of surgery. We also point out the possibility of determination of prominent DCIS on frozen sections.     

Oil and water determination in emulsions by pulsed low-resolution NMR

A pulsed, low-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique has been used for the oil and water determination in O/W emulsions. The method is based on the analysis of the longitudinal magnetization decay curve, that, due to the different relaxation times of oil and water, consists of 2 recognizable components. Correlation of NMR results with fat content is described. A good correlation between the NMR response and fat content by weight has been found. The rapidity and accuracy of the measurements are comparable to those of other techniques.     

Łukasiewicz logic and Riesz spaces

We initiate a deep study of Riesz MV-algebras which are MV-algebras endowed with a scalar multiplication with scalars from \([0,1]\) . Extending Mundici’s equivalence between MV-algebras and \(\ell \) -groups, we prove that Riesz MV-algebras are categorically equivalent to unit intervals in Riesz spaces with strong unit. Moreover, the subclass of norm-complete Riesz MV-algebras is equivalent to the class of commutative unital C \(^*\) -algebras. The propositional calculus \({\mathbb R}{\mathcal L}\) that has Riesz MV-algebras as models is a conservative extension of ?ukasiewicz \(\infty \) -valued propositional calculus and is complete with respect to evaluations in the standard model \([0,1]\) . We prove a normal form theorem for this logic, extending McNaughton theorem for ? ukasiewicz logic. We define the notions of quasi-linear combination and quasi-linear span for formulas in \({\mathbb R}{\mathcal L},\) and relate them with the analogue of de Finetti’s coherence criterion for \({\mathbb R}{\mathcal L}\) .
