Experimental measurements were made of the pH, density, bulk viscosity and electrical conductivity of aqueous solutions of sodium lauryl sulphate for a wide range of concentrations at 25°C. Also, the time-dependent interfacial tension data of this system with mutually saturated benzene phases are reported. Comparison of these data with literature values shows fair agreement in the majority of the cases and further reveals the lack of data in the earlier investigations below the critical micelle concentration of sodium lauryl sulphate in water. A detailed compilation of the data, reported in the literature since 1937, of the pH, density, bulk viscosity, electrical conductivity, surface tension, interfacial tension with benzene, surface excess concentration, surface shear viscosity, diffusivity and critical micelle concentration of the sodium lauryl sulphate system is given. The importance of this anionic surfactant system together with the various factors which influence the physical properties is examined.  相似文献

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the most common forms of neurodegeneration, defined by reduced cognitive function, which is caused by the gradual death of neurons in the brain. Recent studies have shown an age-dependent rise in the levels of voltage-dependent anion channel 1 (VDAC1) in AD. In addition, we discovered an aberrant interaction between VDAC1 and P-TAU in the brains of AD patients, which led to abnormalities in the structural and functional integrity of the mitochondria. The purpose of our study is to understand the protective effects of reduced VDAC1 against impaired mitochondrial dynamics and defective mitochondrial biogenesis in transgenic TAU mice. Recently, we crossed heterozygote VDAC1 knockout (VDAC1+/−) mice with transgenic TAU mice to obtain double-mutant VDAC1+/−/TAU mice. Our goal was to evaluate whether a partial decrease in VDAC1 lessens the amount of mitochondrial toxicity in transgenic Tau (P301L) mice. We found that mitochondrial fission proteins were significantly reduced, and mitochondrial fusion and biogenesis proteins were increased in double-mutant mice compared to TAU mice. On the basis of these discoveries, the current work may have significance for the development of reduced-VDAC1-based treatments for individuals suffering from AD as well as other tauopathies.  相似文献

An analytical model has been developed to study the nuclear-coupled density-wave instability in the Indian advanced heavy water reactor (AHWR) which is a natural circulation pressure tube type boiling water reactor. The model considers a point kinetics model for the neutron dynamics and a lumped parameter model for the fuel thermal dynamics along with the conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy and equation of state for the coolant. In addition, to study the effect of neutron interactions between different parts of the core, the model considers a coupled multipoint kinetics equation in place of simple point kinetics equation. Linear stability theory was applied to reveal the instability of in-phase and out-of-phase modes in the boiling channels of the AHWR. The results indicate that the stability behavior of the reactor is greatly influenced by the void reactivity coefficient, fuel time constant, radial power distribution and channel inlet orificing. The delayed neutrons were found to have a strong influence on the Type I and Type II instabilities observed at low and high channel powers, respectively. Also, it was found that the coupled multipoint kinetics model and the modal point kinetics model predict the same threshold power for out-of-phase instability if the coupling coefficient in the former model is half the eigen value separation between the fundamental and the first harmonic mode in the latter model. Decay ratio maps were predicted considering various operating parameters of the reactor, which are useful for its design.  相似文献

Epochs are instants of significant excitation of vocal-tract system in speech production process. In this paper, we attempt to extract information about epochs from phase spectra of speech signals. The phase spectrum of speech is modelled as the response of an allpass (AP) filter, and the resulting error signal is used for epoch extraction. The parameters of AP model are estimated by imposing sparsity constraints on the error signal. The error signal, thus obtained, exhibits prominent peaks at epoch locations. The epochal candidates obtained from the error signal are refined using a dynamic programming algorithm. The performance of the proposed method is consistent across genders and is comparable with the state-of-the-art methods.  相似文献

The binary nature of direct-sequence signals is exploited to obtain nonlinear filters that outperform the linear filters hitherto used for this purpose. The case of a Gaussian interferer with known autoregressive parameters is considered. Using simulations, it is shown that an approximate conditional mean (ACM) filter of the Masreliez type performs significantly better than the optimum linear (Kalman-Bucy) filter. For the case of interferers with unknown parameters, the nature of the nonlinearity in the ACM filter is used to obtain an adaptive filtering algorithm that is identical to the linear transversal filter except that the previous prediction errors are transformed nonlinearly before being incorporated into the linear prediction. Two versions of this filter are considered: one in which the filter coefficients are updated using the Widrow LMS algorithm, and another in which the coefficients are updated using an approximate gradient algorithm. Simulations indicate that the nonlinear filter with LMS updates performs substantially better than the linear filter for both narrowband Gaussian and single-tone interferers, whereas the gradient algorithm gives slightly better performance for Gaussian interferers but is rather ineffective in suppressing a sinusoidal interferer  相似文献

Polylinen® fabrics are obtained as a result of modification in the physical structure of polyester yarns to replicate the linen fabric. The scanning electron microscope analysis and Fourier transform infrared results reveal that the plasma treated fabric surface is effectively modified to enhance the wettability of the fabrics. In the present study, response surface methodology was employed to investigate the effects of different plasma treatment variables on the wetting behavior of polylinen fabrics. Box–Behnken design was used for the optimization of plasma treatment process and to evaluate the effects and interactions of the process variables, i.e. treatment time, power, and distance between the electrodes on the wettability of polylinen fabrics. The optimum conditions for maximum wicking height (4.3?cm) and spreading rate (86?s) of polylinen fabrics were established at 75?s treatment time, 460 watt power, and 2.5?cm distance between the electrodes. The plasma treated polylinen fabrics showed much better wettability in terms of wicking and spreading rate compared to untreated fabrics, which confirms that the modified structure of polylinen fabric and the plasma treatment influences the wettability of fabrics.  相似文献

An extracellular lipase derived from Bacillus circulans, isolated from marine macroalga, Turbinaraia conoides, was used to prepare n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) concentrates from sardine oil triglycerides. The enzyme was purified 132-fold with specific activity of 386 LU/mg. The purified lipase was able to enrich sardine oil with 37.7 ± 1.98% 20:5n-3 and 5.11 ± 0.14% 18:3n-3 in the triglyceride fraction after 3 h of hydrolysis. Lower hydrophobic constants of n-3 fatty acids (18:3n-3logP = 5.65; 20:5n-3logP = 5.85, respectively) than n-6 (20:4n-6logP = 6.16) resulted in higher hydrolytic resistance of the former toward lipase, leading to their enrichment in the triglyceride fraction. Lipase-catalysed hydrolysis of sardine oil for 3 h, followed by urea complexation, provided free fatty acids containing 51.3 ± 4.65% 20:5n-3. The purified methyl ester of 20:5n-3 (68.29 ± 2.15%) from the urea concentrate was attained by chromatography on argentated neutral alumina.  相似文献

Human α-defensin 5 (HD5) is a host-defense peptide exhibiting broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. The lipopolysaccharide (LPS) layer on the Gram-negative bacterial membrane acts as a barrier to HD5 insertion. Therefore, the pore formation and binding mechanism remain unclear. Here, the binding mechanisms at five positions along the bacterial membrane axis were investigated using Molecular Dynamics. (MD) simulations. We found that HD5 initially placed at positions 1 to 3 moved up to the surface, while HD5 positioned at 4 and 5 remained within the membrane interacting with the middle and inner leaflet of the membrane, respectively. The arginines were key components for tighter binding with 3-deoxy-d-manno-octulosonic acid (KDO), phosphates of the outer and inner leaflets. KDO appeared to retard the HD5 penetration.  相似文献

Buoyancy induced flow and heat transfer are important phenomena in a wide range of engineering systems e.g. electronics and photovoltaics cooling, thermosiphon heat exchangers, solar-thermal heat absorbers, passive decay heat removal systems, etc. Such systems are subject to thermal stratification. The objective of the present work is to study the single phase and two phase (boiling) natural convection accompanied by thermal stratification. We carried out velocity and temperature measurements in a rectangular tank (0.8×0.6×0.6 m3) fitted with (a) a central tube, and (b) a 10 tube assembly; which form the heat transfer surface. Flows were measured using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Additionally, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations of these systems were performed: first with an assumption of no-boiling (i.e. no phase change) near the heat transfer surfaces; for which we used the open source CFD code OpenFOAM-1.6. For two phase simulations, we used the boiling model of Ganguli et al. (2010) and carried out simulations using the commercial software FLUENT 6.3. The extent of stratification and mixing has been investigated for a range of Rayleigh numbers from 4.34×1011 to 2.59×1014. The flow information obtained from PIV was analyzed for insights into the dynamics of turbulent flow structures. We used the signal processing technique of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for this purpose. From the analysis, we were able to estimate the size, velocity and energy distribution of turbulent structures in our flows. This information was used to estimate wall heat transfer coefficients. A good agreement was observed between the predicted and the experimental values of heat transfer coefficients.  相似文献
