Rate (n -1)/n punctured convolutional codes are very effective in conjunction with embedded differential pulse code modulation (EDPCM) in variable-bit-rate speech transmission. The authors investigate the performance of this variable-bit-rate EDPCM system in terms of probability of bit error and audio signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) versus channel SNR in an additive white Gaussian noise and Rayleigh fading channel using soft-decision decoding for specific sets of code generators of punctured convolutional codes. The results show that different sets of code generators affect the performance in terms of both the probability of bit error and the audio SNR. This article examines the psychological impact of participating in sigmoidoscopy screening for colorectal cancer prevention. The 1st study examined psychological well-being at 3 months, in relation to screening outcome, in 4,153 individuals. The 2nd study used longitudinal data to examine changes in psychological functioning from before to after screening in relation both to screening outcome and baseline indicators of vulnerability. There were few psychological differences between those who had received negative results or had polyps detected. These findings were confirmed in the longitudinal study, which also found no evidence for vulnerability to adverse effects among those who were initially most anxious or who perceived their risk of cancer to be higher. New modulation formats are presented that increase the transmission rate over that of conventional systems, without degrading the bit error rate (BER) and with minimal bandwidth variation. A time-varying function called an "extra phase variation function" (EPVF) is added to the discrete phase of conventional modulation formats such as M-PSK and QAM to transmit additional data bits. A receiver configuration is presented that allows the decoding of information represented by the discrete and extra phases. It is shown that in an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, the BER performance of the bits carried by the discrete phase and the extra phase in the modified format improves over the BER of conventional modulation formats. 相似文献

The transverse and longitudinal photoconductivity, photoluminescence, and cathodoluminescence of sublimated (CdS)0.9–(PbS)0.1 films at room temperature and upon cooling are studied. The role of inclusions of the narrow-gap phase in the processes is shown. The films are excited over the entire active surface and pointwise (within one crystallite). The surface recombination rate and the lifetime of majority charge carriers at different generation rates and characters of excitation are estimated. Benefits of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) can be enhanced by raising their bioavailability through microencapsulation. Pollen
can be emptied to form hollow shells, known as exines, and then used to encapsulate material, such as oils in a dry powder
form. Six healthy volunteers ingested 4.6 g of fish oil containing 20% EPA in the form of ethyl ester first alone and then
as 1:1 microencapsulated powder of exines and fish oil. Serum bioavailability of EPA was measured by area under curve (AUC0–24). The mean AUC0–24 of EPA from ethyl ester with exine (M = 19.7, SD = 4.3) was significantly higher than ethyl ester without exines (M = 2, SD = 1.4, p < 0.01).The bioavailability of EPA is enhanced by encapsulation by pollen exines. 相似文献

Sporopollenin exines extracted from the spores of the plant Lycopodium clavatum were used to encapsulate water, sunflower oil (0.5 g/g) and differing amounts of cod liver oil (cod liver oil per gram of sporopollenin exines: 0.5 g/g, 1.0 g/g, 2.0 g/g, 4.0 g/g). A double-blind taste trial, involving 20 volunteers, was conducted to compare the products. The encapsulated oils were in the form of a fine powder up to an oil loading of 1/1 (w/w). Blind tasting could not distinguish the cod liver oil preparation up to 1/1 (w/w) loading compared to the sporopollenin exines filled with either water or sunflower oil. At a loading of 2/1 and 4/1, the cod liver oil was uniformly identified. Therefore, sporopollenin exines can be loaded highly, at up to 1 g oil to 1 g of the exines, and still remain as a dry powder and retain flavor masking, thus disguising the contents. 相似文献

This paper addresses the challenge of building an automated decision support methodology to tackle the complex problem faced
every day by runway controllers at London Heathrow Airport. Aircraft taxi from stands to holding areas at the end of the take-off
runway where they wait in queues for permission to take off. A runway controller attempts to find the best order for aircraft
to take off. Sequence-dependent separation rules that depend upon aircraft size, departure route and speed group ensure that
this is not a simple problem to solve. Take-off time slots on some aircraft and the need to avoid excessive delay for any
aircraft make this an even more complicated problem. Making this decision at the holding area helps to avoid the problems
of unpredictable push-back and taxi times, but introduces a number of complex spatial constraints that would not otherwise
exist. The holding area allows some flexibility for interchange of aircraft between queues, but this is limited by its physical
layout. These physical constraints are not usually included in academic models of the departure problem. However, any decision
support system to support the take-off runway controller must include them. We show, in this paper, that a decision support
system could help the controllers to significantly improve the departure sequence at busy times of the day, by considering
the taxiing aircraft in addition to those already at the holding area. However, undertaking this re-introduces the issue of
taxi time uncertainty, the effect of which we explicitly measure in these experiments. Empirical results are presented for
experiments using real data from different times of the day, showing how the performance of the system varies depending upon
the volume of traffic and the accuracy of the provided taxi time estimations. We conclude that the development of a good taxi
time prediction system is key to maximising the benefits, although benefits can be observed even without this. 相似文献
