The processing of stepwise graded Si3N4/SiC ceramics by pressureless co-sintering is described. Here, SiC (high elastic modulus, high thermal expansion coefficient) forms the substrate and Si3N4 (low elastic modulus, low thermal expansion coefficient) forms the top contact surface, with a stepwise gradient in composition existing between the two over a depth of ∼1.7 mm. The resulting Si3N4 contact surface is fine-grained and dense, and it contains only 2 vol% yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) additive. This graded ceramic shows resistance to cone-crack formation under Hertzian indentation, which is attributed to a combined effect of the elastic-modulus gradient and the compressive thermal-expansion-mismatch residual stress present at the contact surface. The presence of the residual stress is corroborated and quantified using Vickers indentation tests. The graded ceramic also possesses wear properties that are significantly improved compared with dense, monolithic Si3N4 containing 2 vol% YAG additive. The improved wear resistance is attributed solely to the large compressive stress present at the contact surface. A modification of the simple wear model by Lawn and co-workers is used to rationalize the wear results. Results from this work clearly show that the introduction of surface compressive residual stresses can significantly improve the wear resistance of polycrystalline ceramics, which may have important implications for the design of contact-damage-resistant ceramics.  相似文献

Aim: The authors report the biological synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO‐NPs) from the petals extract of Rosa indica L. (rose). Its efficacy was evaluated against two dermatophytes: namely: Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Microsporum canis which cause onychomycosis. The activity of antibiotics against the tested dermatophytes was enhanced, when evaluated in combination with ZnO‐NPs. Methods and results: The synthesised ZnO‐NPs were preliminary detected by using ultraviolet UV visible spectroscopy, which showed specific absorbance. The ZnO‐NPs were further characterised by nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X‐ray diffraction and Zetasizer. Moreover, nanoparticles containing nail paint (nanopaint) was formulated and its antifungal activity was also assessed against T. mentagrophytes and M. canis. ZnO‐NPs and formulated nanopaint containing ZnO‐NPs, both showed significant antifungal activity. The maximum activity was noted against M. canis and lesser against T. mentagrophytes. Minimum inhibitory concentration of ZnO‐NPs was also determined against the dermatophytes causing onychomycosis infection. AC-impedance spectroscopic studies in the temperature range of 30–400 °C are carried out on solid solutions of lead magnesium niobate (PMN) with lead titanate (PT) and lead zirconate (PZ), both of them in the 65/35 atomic ratio. For PMN–PT this corresponds to the morphotropic phase boundary composition (with normal ferroelectric behaviour), and for PMN–PZ it is near the phase boundary between normal ferroelectric and relaxor ferroelectric compositions. The variation of dielectric permittivity with temperature at different frequencies shows normal ferroelectric and relaxor-like dependence for PMN–PT and PMN–PZ, respectively. Temperature-dependent spectroscopic modulus plots reveal a much broader peak for PMN–PZ compared to that for PMN–PT, which is consistent with the dielectric behaviour. PMN–PT shows nearly ideal Debye behaviour below Tm (the temperature of the permittivity maximum) and the behaviour departs from ideality above Tm, whereas non-ideal Debye behaviour is seen both below and above Tm for PMN–PZ. Complex modulus plots fit well with two depressed semicircles and three depressed semicircles, respectively, for PMN–PT and PMN–PZ. The relaxation observed in the spectroscopic plots around 1 MHz for PMN–PT has been assigned to polarisation relaxation expected for normal-sized domains. No such relaxation could be observed for PMN–PZ around 1 MHz because of the mesoscopic domain sizes.  相似文献

India needs large dams for water storage, hydropower and flood control. It also needs long-distance inter-basin water transfers. However, India has a complex and strict environmental regulatory system which ignores a developing economy's needs and peoples' aspirations and is often impractical. This is used by activists to thwart infrastructure building, and, when faced with development slowdown, the government tries to thwart the laws they themselves have made. India's food, water and energy security, economic, and poverty-alleviation plans are in jeopardy unless environmental regulators realize that the regulations are being misused and that environmental over-enthusiasm is benefiting neither development nor the environment.  相似文献

The kinetics of colour (measured as Hunter ‘a’ value) degradation in tomato puree (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) has been studied over a temperature range of 50–120 °C (isothermal condition), and also during normal open pan cooking, pressure cooking and cooking in a newly developed and patented fuel-efficient ‘EcoCooker’ (non-isothermal condition). The degradation of colour as measured by Hunter ‘a’ value was found to follow first order kinetics. The temperature dependence of degradation was adequately modelled by Arrhenius equation. A mathematical model has been developed using the isothermal parameters obtained to predict correctly the losses of red colour from the time–temperature data of non-isothermal heating/processing method. The results obtained indicate a colour degradation of similar magnitude in all the three modes of cooking used in the study.  相似文献

Microgravity, as a different environment, has been shown to affect plant growth and development (Sievers et al. 1996; Sack 1997). In the present study, effects of slow clinorotation (2 rpm) on growth and chlorophyll content in rice (variety: PRH-10) seedlings were investigated. Rice seeds were clinorotated continuously for 3, 5 and 7 days under ambient conditions. Root and shoot lengths and weights of rice seedlings were measured on the third, fifth and seventh day. Chlorophyll was extracted using N, N-Dimethylformamide (DMF). Absorption and fluorescence spectra of chlorophyll were recorded. Chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll contents were calculated from absorption spectra using Arnon’s method. Results showed an increase in root and shoot lengths in clinorotated samples. Similar results were obtained for root and shoot weights. Absorption spectra of chlorophyll showed no shift in the absorption peaks. Chlorophyll content was increased in clinorotated samples as compared to the controls. Interestingly, the difference between chlorophyll content in control and clinorotated samples decreased as the number of days of clinorotation increased. Chlorophyll a/b ratio was lowered in clinorotated samples as compared to the controls. These results suggest that slow clinorotation (2 rpm) affects plant growth and chlorophyll content in rice seedlings.  相似文献

A major limitation associated with fermentative hydrogen production is the low substrate conversion efficiency. This limitation can be overcome by integrating the process with a microbial fuel cell (MFC) which converts the residual energy of the substrate to electricity. Studies were carried out to check the feasibility of this integration. Biohydrogen was produced from the fermentation of cane molasses in both batch and continuous modes. A maximum yield of about 8.23 mol H2/kg CODremoved was observed in the batch process compared to 11.6 mol H2/kg CODremoved in the continuous process. The spent fermentation media was then used as a substrate in an MFC for electricity generation. The MFC parameters such as the initial anolyte pH, the substrate concentration and the effect of pre-treatment were studied and optimized to maximize coulombic efficiency. Reductions in COD and total carbohydrates were about 85% and 88% respectively. A power output of 3.02 W/m3 was obtained with an anolyte pH of 7.5 using alkali pre-treated spent media. The results show that integrating a MFC with dark fermentation is a promising way to utilize the substrate energy.  相似文献
