Although Hodgkin's disease is considered one of the "curable" cancers, the high cure rates associated with this disease are not accomplished without risk of potentially severe, immediate, and late side effects. Because the predominant histologic subtype of Hodgkin's disease found in the United States generally affects the 15- to 25-year-old age group, the disease, its treatment, and the side effects of treatment will affect many women of childbearing age. There is growing evidence that face recognition is "special" but less certainty concerning the way in which it is special. The authors review and compare previous proposals and their own more recent hypothesis, that faces are recognized "holistically" (i.e., using relatively less part decomposition than other types of objects). This hypothesis, which can account for a variety of data from experiments on face memory, was tested with 4 new experiments on face perception. A selective attention paradigm and a masking paradigm were used to compare the perception of faces with the perception of inverted faces, words, and houses. Evidence was found of relatively less part-based shape representation for faces. The literatures on machine vision and single unit recording in monkey temporal cortex are also reviewed for converging evidence on face representation. The neuropsychological literature is reviewed for-evidence on the question of whether face representation differs in degree or kind from the representation of other types of objects. 相似文献

Different methods of legumin isolation from faba beans were compared with regard to the removal of vicilin taking into consideration the additional influence of variety. SDS-PAGE, analytical ultracentrifugation and SE-HPLC were used for the analysis of protein composition. SDS-PAGE analysis of the isolated legumin samples revealed, that neither combined salt fraction/isoelectric precipitation nor heating to 73 °C resulted in a complete removal of vicilin. Time-consuming isoelectric zonal precipitation and heating at 83 °C as described by Schlesier et al. (Biochem. Physiol. Pflanzen 180 (1985) 225) provides legumin preparations free of vicilin in low yields. Acceptable yields in shorter time were obtained by combining isoelectric precipitation/salt fractionation with Schlesier's procedure. The foaming ability (foam capacity and stability) of protein isolates from faba beans (Vicia faba L.) depends closely on the manner of isolation and treatment of the isolates. Unmodified isolates possess a moderate foaming ability with a maximum foam capacity of 210% in alkaline solution (pH 10.0) at concentrations of about 3%. The foam capacity and stability can be improved by treatment with isopropanol or moderate temperature, as well as by denaturing by alkali or by specially heating at 80 degrees C. Thereby modified preparations are formed possessing a foam capacity of more than 400% and a foam stability of 80-100%. High concentrations of protein favour the formation of stable foams. Succinylation improves the foam formation properties of proteins. Maximum values of foam capacity (approximately equal to 400%) are produced at a high degree of succinylation, that is after blocking more than 80% of protein amino groups, in neutral solution, while the foam stability under these conditions decreases. Heating at 80 degrees C, high protein concentrations (10%) and a weak acidic milieu (pH 5.5) favour the formation of stable foams from succinylated proteins. 相似文献

The 12 S globulin of rapeseed represents an oligomeric protein with a molecular weight of 300,000. It is composed of 6 subunits, which are arranged in a trigonal antiprism with the point group symmetry 32 (D3). Each subunit contains smaller units (polypeptide chains) with molecular weights in the range of 18,500 to 31,000. The protein contains the following 4 polypeptide chains differing by their molecular weights in the SDS-electrophoresis; 18,500 ± 800, 21,100 ± 500, 26,800 ± 900, 31,200 ± 1,600. According to its quaternary structure the protein dissociates under milieu conditions. The secondary structure of the protein is characterized by a low (11 %) content of α-helix and a relatively high (31%) content of β-conformation. Owing to its structure and physico-chemical properties the rapeseed protein is closely related to other 11/12 S globulins in the seeds of different plant species and botanical families. 相似文献

Protein isolates prepared from yeasts by isoelectric precipitation and ultrafiltration, respectively, show differences in their solubility and gelchromatographic behaviour. The ultrafiltrated preparation represents a less aggregated protein. The SDS-discelectrophoresis patterns are identical, which is a proof for an identical protein polypeptide distribution in the isoelectric precipitated and ultrafiltrated samples Significant differences were found between ultrafiltrated proteins from Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida guilliermondi yeasts using SDS-disc-electrophoresis, gel chromatography, as well as determination of solubility profiles, amino acid composition, and thiol/disulphide content All the main fractions of the isolated protein posses a molecular weight distribution mainly in the range of 50000-70000. From January, 1962, through December, 1973, 1,084 patients with cancer of the intrinsic larynx were treated at the Mayo Clinic. Of the 1,084 patients, 136 were retreated after radiation therapy failed to cure their cancer (105 glottic, 30 supraglottic, and one subglottic cancers). Recurrence of glottic cancer was generally recognized later than recurrences in the supraglottic area; likewise, glottic cancers were more advanced at recurrence than supraglottic growths. When feasible, conservation surgery was carried out on both glottic and supraglottic growths. Unfortunately, many growths were too advanced for conservation surgery by the time recurrence was recognized. The concept of "radiate-and-watch" for early glottic and supraglottic cancers is designed to save larynges. The concept is not supported by this study. 相似文献

The influence of the level of vitamin B6 intake on the content of the vitamin in milk was studied in 19 healthy subjects whose stages of lactation ranged from 3 weeks to 30 months. Total vitamin B6 intakes, including extra-dietary sources of the vitamin, ranged from 1.3 to 12.5 mg per day with six subjects consuming less than the recommended allowance of 2.5 mg per day (RDA, 1974). Subjects consuming less than 2.5 mg of vitamin B6 per day had significantly less vitamin B6/liter milk (129 mug) than groups consuming 2.5 to 5.0 or greater than 5.0 mg per day (239 and 314 mug, respectively). Among subjects consuming greater than 2.5 mg of vitamin per day the stage of lactation did not influence the levels of protein or vitamin B6 in milk. Vitamin B6 intakes two to five times the recommended allowance did not significantly elevate the level of the vitamin in milk compared to values for subjects whose intakes approximated the allowance. The vitamin B6/protein ratio in milk of subjects consuming less than 2.5 mg vitamin B6 per day was 13 mug/g and was significantly lower than that observed for the other two groups (23 and 28 mug/g). Daily and weekly variations of the vitamin B6 and protein content in milk of individuals were small. However, marked diurnal variations in the vitamin B6 content were found in milk of individuals taking daily supplements of the vitamin with peak levels occurring in the afternoon 3 to 5 hr after supplements were taken in the morning. 相似文献
