Develops 3 hypotheses to explain the role of construal processes in conformity behavior. According to the preconformity change of meaning hypothesis, social influence leads to changes in situational construal that precede and mediate conformity behavior; according to the postconformity change of meaning hypothesis, construal change follows and justifies conformity; and according to the construal-consistency hypothesis, preexisting situational construal distinguishes those who conform from those who dissent. Four experimental studies with varying methodology and involving a total of 361 undergraduate students were performed to test these hypotheses. The results of all studies provide strong evidence for postconformity change of meaning effects. Discussion centers on possible domains in which the different construal mechanisms might operate. The production of structural and functional materials with enhanced mechanical properties through the integration of soft and hard components is a common approach to Nature's material design. However, directly mimicking these optimized design routes in the lab for practical applications remains challenging. For example, graphene and silk are two materials with complementary mechanical properties that feature ultrahigh stiffness and toughness, respectively. Yet, no simple and controllable approach is developed to homogeneously integrate these two components into functional composites, mainly due to the hydrophobicity and chemical inertness of graphene. In this study, well‐dispersed and highly stable graphene/silk fibroin (SF) suspension systems are developed, which are suitable for processing to fabricate polymorphic materials, such as films, fibers, and coatings. The obtained graphene/SF nanocomposites maintain the electronic advantages of graphene, and they also allow tailorable mechanical performance to form including ultrahigh stretchable (with a strain to failure to 611 ± 85%), or high strength (339 MPa) and high stiffness (7.4 GPa) material systems. More remarkably, the electrical resistances of these graphene/SF materials are sensitive to material deformation, body movement, as well as humidity and chemical environmental changes. Together with the globular proteins, microtubules and microfilaments, intermediate filaments are one of the three major components of the cytoskeleton in eukaryotic cells. They consist of a dimeric coiled-coil building block, assembled in a very precise, hierarchical fashion into tetramers, forming filaments with characteristic dimensions on the order of several micrometers. Here we focus on the theoretical analysis of the deformation mechanics of vimentin intermediate filaments, a type of intermediate filament expressed in leukocytes, blood vessel endothelial cells, some epithelial cells, and mesenchymal cells such as fibroblasts. The main contribution of this paper is the study of the rupture mechanics of intermediate filament tetramers, representing an assembly of two dimers, by utilizing a statistical Bell model adapted to describe the rupture dynamics of intermediate filaments. Possible deformation mechanisms, including interdimer sliding and uncoiling of the dimer, are illustrated in light of the interdimer adhesion and dimer stability. The analysis reveals that the dominating deformation mechanism depends critically on the interdimer adhesion, solvent condition, and deformation rate. 相似文献

There has been much recent research interest into “cryogen-free” dilution refrigerators. Cryogen-free systems have some advantages from a safety and convenience point of view as liquid cryogens are unnecessary. However, this also makes integrating the low-temperature system with a high magnetic field environment much more challenging. Here we shall describe recent successes of integrating superconducting magnets and dilution refrigerators into one system requiring a single pulse tube cooler. The resulting environment provides experimental temperatures between 7 mK and 30 K and magnetic fields up to 12 T. We shall describe the effects of AC loss heating in such systems on the pulse tube refrigerator when the field is ramped and also the effects of eddy current heating on the mixing chamber in sweeping fields. 相似文献

We present the implementation of intensity-modulated laser diodes for applications in frequency-domain pump-probe fluorescence microscopy. Our technique, which is based on the stimulated-emission approach, uses two sinusoidally modulated laser diodes. One laser (635 nm) excites the chromophores under study, and the other laser (680 nm) is responsible for inducing stimulated emission from excited-state molecules. Both light sources are modulated in the 80-MHz range but with an offset of 5 kHz between them. The result of the interaction of the pump and the probe beams is that a cross-correlation fluorescence signal at 5 kHz is generated primarily at the focal volume. Microscope imaging at the cross-correlation signal results in images with high contrast, and time-resolved high-frequency information can be acquired without high-speed detection. A detailed experimental arrangement of our methodology is presented along with images acquired from a 4.0-mum-diameter fluorescent sphere and TOTO-3-labeled mouse STO cells. (TOTO-3 is a nucleic acid stain.) Our results demonstrate the feasibility of using sinusoidally modulated laser diodes for pump-probe imaging, creating the exciting possibility of high-contrast time-resolved imaging with low-cost laser-diode systems. 相似文献

This study examined adolescents' emotional reactivity to parents' marital conflict as a mediator of the association between triangulation and adolescents' internalizing problems in a sample of 2-parent families (N = 426). Four waves of annual, multiple-informant data were analyzed (youth ages 11–15 years). The authors used structural equation modeling and found that triangulation was associated with increases in adolescents' internalizing problems, controlling for marital hostility and adolescent externalizing problems. There also was an indirect pathway from triangulation to internalizing problems across time through youths' emotional reactivity. Moderating analyses indicated that the 2nd half of the pathway, the association between emotional reactivity and increased internalizing problems, characterized youth with lower levels of hopefulness and attachment to parents. The findings help detail why triangulation is a risk factor for adolescents' development and which youth will profit most from interventions focused on emotional regulation. It is a common perception that layered materials are soft in the interlayer direction. Herein, we present results of first-principles calculations of the structure and elastic constants of a class for hydrated oxides, tobermorite, and jennite, which illustrate that this is not the case, if (1) the interlayer distance is such that coulombic interlayer interactions become comparable to the iono-covalent intralayer interactions and (2) the existence of interlayer ions and water molecules do not shield the coulombic interlayer interactions. In this case, the mechanically softest directions are two inclined regions that form a hinge mechanism. The investigated class of materials and results are relevant to chemically complex hydrated oxides such as layered calcium–silicate–hydrates (C–S–H), the binding phase of all concrete materials, and the principle source of their strength and stiffness. Bulk indium phosphide crystals have been prepared by zone melting with dislocation densities 104 ≤ Nd ≤ 105 cm-2. The residual impurity level in nominally undoped crystals and the dopant distribution in Cd-, Sn- and Ge-doped zone melted
ingots, as revealed by spark source mass spectrometric analyses, indicate a strong interaction between segregation at the
solid/liquid interface and vapor transport. The effective distribution coefficients for Sn and Ge in zone melted InP are ke(Sn) = 0.3 and ke(Ge) = 0.4. The free electron concentration measured in the middle section of nominally undoped ingots is ND-NA = 1.9 × 1015 cm-3 corresponding to a Hall mobility Μe = 3263 cm2V-1sec-l. 相似文献
