Many large lake ecosystems are experiencing increasing eutrophication and persistent cyanobacteria‐dominated algal blooms affecting their water quality and ecosystem productivity because of widespread non‐point and point nutrient sources. Accordingly, the present study utilized data of July 2003 and January–February 2004, as well as previous measurements of nutrients and physico‐chemical variables (electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, turbidity and chlorophyll‐a), to characterize the spatial and temporal trends, as a means of better understanding the factors influencing lake environmental conditions, as support tools for long‐term ecosystem management and for better understanding the long‐term trends and effects. Inshore gulf areas were found to represent zones of maximum nutrient concentrations, compared to the deep main lake zones, with significant inter‐parameter correlations. Phosphorus, silicon and chlorophyll‐a concentrations were significantly correlated. Water electrical conductivity was also significantly and positively correlated with soluble reactive silicon (SRSi), alkalinity hardness DO, while exhibiting a negative association with water transparency. Water turbidity and transparency, electrical conductivity, and SRSi concentrations clearly describe a gradient from the gulf into the main lake. For such a shallow gulf, these findings suggest primary productivity is influenced mainly by the availability of nutrients, light transparency and the extent of availability of resuspended nutrients. The increasing eutrophic state of Lake Victoria is a serious concern since it contributes to an increased potential of more frequent occurrences of cyanobacterial blooms, a potential public health risk to both humans and wildlife. Improved understanding of influences from previous fish species introductions and concomitant changes in indigenous fish species, increased lake basin population and anthropogenic activities, water hyacinth resurgences, sustainability of biodiversity, and current interests in cage farming, are among the major concerns and challenges facing the contemporary Lake Victoria. The trends regarding nutrients and physico‐chemical characteristics are intended to support better monitoring efforts and data to promote the lake's ecosystem services and the sustainable management of the lake ecosystem.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral emboli can be recognized by typical "high-intensity transient signals" (HITS) in the transcranial Doppler (TCD) spectral curves. Patients with potential cardiac sources of embolism are at higher risk for stroke. METHODS: We examined the frequency of HITS in the left middle cerebral artery (MCA) with TCD over periods of 30 minutes in 100 patients having potential cardiac sources of embolism, as indicated by transthoracic or transesophageal echocardiography. RESULTS: Thirty-six (36%) of the patients presented with HITS. Sex, age, sufficient anticoagulation level, antiplatelet therapy, neurological symptoms, and a history of thrombosis had no influence on the prevalence and number of HITS. The patients with a single echocardiographic diagnosis were separated into eight echocardiographically defined groups: patients with (1) atrial fibrillation, (2) coronary artery disease plus ejection fraction of more than 30% including at least three wall segments of hypokinesia/akinesia, (3) coronary artery disease with less than 30% ejection fraction, (4) dilated cardiomyopathy, (5) infectious endocarditis, (6) aortic stenosis, (7) mitral stenosis, and (8) patent foramen ovale. A significant difference in HITS occurrence could not be found in any of the defined groups. Only patients with infectious endocarditis showed a tendency for a higher HITS prevalence. CONCLUSIONS: HITS are common phenomena in patients with potential cardiac sources of embolism. The clinical relevance of these HITS remains unclear.  相似文献

In the present research, we test the assumption that emotional mimicry and contagion are moderated by group membership. We report two studies using facial electromyography (EMG; Study 1), Facial Action Coding System (FACS; Study 2), and self-reported emotions (Study 2) as dependent measures. As predicted, both studies show that ingroup anger and fear displays were mimicked to a greater extent than outgroup displays of these emotions. The self-report data in Study 2 further showed specific divergent reactions to outgroup anger and fear displays. Outgroup anger evoked fear, and outgroup fear evoked aversion. Interestingly, mimicry increased liking for ingroup models but not for outgroup models. The findings are discussed in terms of the social functions of emotions in group contexts. Transmitted-reference (TR) ultra-wideband (UWB) communication systems have gained increasing popularity for the usage in the low data rate application, due to its non-coherent receiver structure. In conventional TR system, non-coherency at the receiver is achieved by sending reference pulses prior to the data-bearing pulses. Then, at the receiver side, reference pulses are used as template signals for correlation with data-bearing pulses. Therefore, the orthogonality between reference and data pulses is obtained in time division multiple access (TDMA) fashion. However, the implementation of a wideband delay line is very difficult in the current low power integrated circuits. In this paper, a TR method called Chaos-Based TR (CB-TR) is proposed. In the proposed method, chaotic sequences are used to separate the reference and data pulses. Such approach exploits the benefits of chaotic signals, such as non-periodicity, easy-to-generate, impulse-like autocorrelation value and low cross-correlation value. Furthermore, in order to decrease the influence of some negative properties of conventional chaotic maps, a modified chaotic generator (MCS) is proposed. Simulation results over the IEEE 802.15.4a channel model show comparable bit error rate performance to other TR methods.  相似文献

Eight different calcium phosphate nanoparticles, namely bovine bone bioapatite calcined at 500, 600, and 700°C, Mg-doped brushite, fluorinated calcium phosphate, Ca-deficient hydroxyapatite, hydroxyapatite, and tricalcium phosphate, were characterized employing physico-chemical methods. Their cytocompatibility was evaluated under human osteoblast-like cell line MG-63 culture conditions in elution media and via the direct interaction of cells with calcium phosphate nanoparticles. The main objective was to determine the correlation of the cell indices with the differently determined physical and chemical parameters of the calcium phosphates. Chemical composition, which contributes toward pH changes, and the calcium ion concentration in the medium appear to make up particularly significant factors; moreover, it was proved that the number of material types represents a further important aspect. In the case of a large number of material types, almost no correlation was determined between the analyzed parameters; however, in the case of a small number of apatite types, several positive correlations were found. It can be concluded that it is not possible to identify any monitored parameters that had a major impact on cell behavior or, at least, such an effect which can be generalized. It appears more likely that cell behavior is affected by the interplay of various parameters.  相似文献

A continuous process for producing porous carbon xerogel beads has been developed. It consists in injecting a pre‐cured aqueous solution of resorcinol and formaldehyde on top of a column filled with hot oleic acid. The latter is pumped on the top of the column and fed at the bottom, generating an upward flow that can be adjusted to match the terminal velocity of the settling beads. Thus, the bead residence time in the column can be adjusted to match the gelation time, allowing the beads to solidify before reaching the bottom of the vessel. The obtained beads are subsequently dried and pyrolyzed. The developed experimental setup proved the continuous synthesis of porous carbon beads is possible. Nevertheless, the shaping process caused various texture changes of the porous carbon, which mainly yields macropores instead of micro and mesopores. The effect of electron beam irradiation of dielectric and conductivity properties of nano ZnO–natural rubber (NR) disks was investigated here. It is revealed that electric properties such as AC conductivity, dielectric constant, and loss tangent of the irradiated samples were improved significantly as compared to the non-irradiated samples, which have been associated with defects in the composites. The total number of dipoles was generated inside the polymer matrix upon irradiation depends on the dislocations formed inside the matrix. From the experiments, we observe that in the amorphous region electron beam irradiation fetches crosslinking and breakdown at the same time. The enhancement of the dielectric and conductivity properties demonstrates that nano ZnO–NR disks will be a promising candidate for the optoelectronic industry. Finally, we also examined the influences of temperature on the electrical conductivity of irradiated samples.  相似文献

Thirty-six cases of premature thelarche in girls 9 months to 7 years old have been studied. In most cases, breast development began before 3 years and came to regression. Onset after 3 years was less common and led usually to breast persistance. Height was lightly but significantly advanced. Plasma levels of estrone, estradiol (in 21 cases) and gonadotropins (FSH and LH, in 12 cases) were not significantly increased. However, LH-RH test (in 12 cases) suggested prolongation and/or increase of the physiologic gonadotropic hyperactivity of normal female infants.  相似文献
