INTRODUCTION: Previous work has shown that parents prefer to be present when their children undergo common invasive procedures, although physicians are ambivalent about parental presence. PURPOSE: To determine the effect of a parent-focused intervention on the pain and performance of the procedure, anxiety of parents and clinicians, and parental satisfaction with care. POPULATION: Children younger than 3 years old undergoing venipuncture, intravenous cannulation, or uretheral catheterization. SETTING: Pediatric emergency department of Boston City Hospital. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial with three groups; parents present and given instructions on how to help their children; parents present, but no instructions given; and parents not present. INTERVENTION: The parents were instructed to touch, talk to, and maintain eye contact during the procedure. RESULTS: A total of 431 parents was randomized to the intervention (N = 153), present (N = 147), and not present (N = 131) groups. The groups were equivalent with respect to measured sociodemographic variables and parents' previous experience in the pediatric emergency department. No differences emerged with respect to pain (3-point scale measured by parent and clinician, and analysis of cry); performance of the procedure (number of attempts, completion of procedure by first clinician, time); clinician anxiety; or parental satisfaction with care. Parents who were present were more likely to rate the pain of the children as extreme/severe (52%) in comparison to clinicians (15%, kappa .07, poor agreement) and were significantly less anxious than parents who were not present. CONCLUSION: Overall, the intervention was not effective in reducing the pain of routine procedures. Parental presence did not negatively affect performance of the procedure or increase clinician anxiety. Parents who were present were less anxious than those who were not present. CLINICAL IMPLICATION: In general, parents have indicated that they want to be present when their children undergo procedures. The results of this study challenge the traditional belief that parental presence negatively affects our ability to successfully complete procedures. We should encourage parents who want to be present to stay during procedures.  相似文献

The present work describes the method of the measurement of thermoelectric power of oxide materials under the gas phase of controlled oxygen activity with high accuracy. The present study reports the thermopower data for undoped CaTiO3 at elevated temperatures (973–1323 K) and under the oxygen partial pressure in the range 10–105 Pa. The obtained experimental data indicate lack of consistency between the thermopower data determined in this work and the electrical conductivity data reported before with respect to the n–p transition point, that is, the p(O2) corresponding to the minimum of electrical conductivity differs from that at which S=0. The thermopower data were used to establish the temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity at constant thermopower. The obtained activation energy is in the range 119 kJ/mol in the n- and n–p transition regimes and assumes 146 kJ/mol in the p-type regime.  相似文献

Structural evaluation of thermal stratification for PWR surge line   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Recent observations at operating plants and subsequent US NRC requirements have identified flow stratification in surge lines as a phenomenon that must be considered in the design basis of surge lines. To address these concerns, the stratified loading conditions were included in the design of YGN 3 and 4 surge line as a design basis transient and pipe temperature and displacement measurement were taken during YGN 3 pre-core hot functional testing to determine the degree of surge line flow stratification. The measured displacements and temperatures were extensively reviewed and evaluated in detail: (1) to verify the validity of the thermal hydraulic model used to predict the pipe top-to-bottom temperature differentials; (2) to analytically correlate measured surge line temperatures and displacements; and (3) to confirm the validity of the stratified flow analysis procedure. This paper shows that the stratified flow phenomenon is generic and therefore generic loadings can be developed and evaluated for the surge line analyses.  相似文献

Ability of commercial rosemary extracts (REs) alone and in combination with sodium tripolyphosphate (P) to inhibit lipid oxidation in uncured deli turkey (UDT) was examined via headspace hexanal and oxidation flavour. Sliced UDT was packaged (75% N2/25% CO2) and stored 13 weeks at 4 °C. Addition of P decreased hexanal 2.4-fold (P < 0.05) and increased mean pH of UDT from 5.94 to 6.30 (P < 0.05). Addition of water/lipid-soluble RE did not inhibit hexanal formation in UDT. Addition of water-soluble RE decreased hexanal 2.2-fold (P < 0.05). The combination of P and water-soluble RE decreased hexanal 33-fold (P < 0.05). The combination of P and water/lipid-soluble RE decreased hexanal ninefold (P < 0.05). Oxidation flavour was highest in UDT without added antioxidant> RE> P> RE+P (P < 0.05). Hexanal values were positively correlated with oxidation flavour scores throughout storage (P < 0.05). The combination of P with either RE was particularly effective at inhibiting lipid oxidation in modified atmosphere packaged UDT.  相似文献

We investigated the protein binding affinity of magnetite (Fe3O4) and maghemite (gamma-Fe2O3) nanoparticles with against non-characterized protein from human lung cancer A549 cell line on sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The binding ability of maghemite was 400 ng/mg. According to the SDS-PAGE results, the protein binding affinity of maghemite nanoparticles is stronger than magnetite nanoparticles. These data suggest that a protein can be detected with maghemite nanoparticles.  相似文献

Small diameter (<6 mm) vessel grafts still pose a challenge for scientists worldwide. Decellularised umbilical artery (dUA) remains promising as small diameter tissue engineered vascular graft (TEVG), yet their immunogenicity remains unknown. Herein, we evaluated the host immune responses, with a focus on the innate part, towards human dUA implantation in mice, and confirmed our findings in an ex vivo allogeneic human setup. Overall, we did not observe any differences in the number of circulating white blood cells nor the number of monocytes among three groups of mice (1) dUA patch; (2) Sham; and (3) Mock throughout the study (day −7 to 28). Likewise, we found no difference in systemic inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokine levels between groups. However, a massive local remodelling response with M2 macrophages were observed in the dUA at day 28, whereas M1 macrophages were less frequent. Moreover, human monocytes from allogeneic individuals were differentiated into macrophages and exposed to lyophilised dUA to maximize an eventual M1 response. Yet, dUA did not elicit any immediate M1 response as determined by the absence of CCR7 and CXCL10. Together this suggests that human dUA elicits a minimal pro-inflammatory response further supporting its use as a TEVG in an allogeneic setup.  相似文献

A series of densely grafted poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PBA) molecular brushes with four different grafting densities were synthesized by the “grafting-from” approach using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A novel monomer, isopropylidene-2,2-Bis(methoxy)propionic hydroxyethylmethacrylate (IMPHMA), was synthesized and copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) under different monomer feed ratios to yield a series of linear poly(methyl methacrylate-stat-IMAPA), [PMMA-s-(PIMPHMA)]. The resulting copolymers were deprotected and transformed to macroinitiators, [PMMA-s-(PHEMA-IMPHMA-Br)]. n-Butyl acrylate (BA) was grafted from these macroinitiators to yield a series of molecular brushes, [PMMA-s-{(PIMPHMA)-g-PBA}], with various side chain lengths. Molecular brushes were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and 1H NMR. PBA side chains were cleaved by acid hydrolysis, and the resulting linear PBA polymers were characterized by GPC to study initiation efficiency during the synthesis of molecular brushes. The initiation efficiency increased with polymerization time and decreased with macroinitiators that had more initiation sites. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements demonstrated the characteristic molecular structure by resolving individual brush molecules.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant mechanisms of red ginseng essential oil (REO) in cells as well as in an animal model. REO was prepared by a supercritical CO(2) extraction of waste-products generated after hot water extraction of red ginseng. In HepG2 cells, REO diminished the H(2)O(2)-mediated oxidative stress and also restored both the activity and expression of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase. Administration of REO inhibited the phosphorylation of upstream mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) such as c-Jun N-terminal kinase, extracellular signal-regulated kinase, and p38. In mice, the CCl(4)-mediated elevation of serum aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase as well as the induction of hepatic lipid peroxidation were decreased by REO administration. REO treatments also resulted in up-regulation of the antioxidant enzyme expression in the liver. Moreover, increased phosphorylations of MAPKs were inhibited after REO administration. Overall, REO seems to protect the liver from oxidative stress through the activation and induction of antioxidant enzymes via inhibition of MAPKs pathways.  相似文献

In order to investigate the filtration properties of fly ash from a conventional coal power plant, the filtration drag across the dust cake over an absolute fiberglass filter element was measured. A fluidized bed column was utilized to obtain a well characterized particle stream. The cake resistance coefficient was analyzed by the equation proposed by Endo et al. [1998] in order to observe the effect of particle size and polydispersity. The filtration drag was measured for three kinds of particle stream having the geometric mean particle size of 3.15, 6.07, and 7.83 μm and the geometric standard deviation less than 1.44 in the practical operation conditions for the field applications of face velocity of 0.03–0.06 m/s and area dust load up to 0.2 kg/m2. A dust cake of smaller particle size showed larger pressure drop even though the porosity was higher and presented high compressibility according to the face velocity. The particle polydispersity was also a dominant factor affecting the compressibility of the dust cake.  相似文献
