L'observation des processus de groupe: difficultés méthodologiques et perspectives.

Discusses problems involved in collecting data based on observation of small groups. The example of a study of manifestations of cooperation in groups of preschoolers (aged 21–57 mo) is used for illustration. Cationic ring-opening polymerization of hexamethylcyclodisilazane: General aspects and tentative mechanisms

The ring-opening polymerization of hexamethylcyclodisilazane (D_2NMe), initiated by methyl triflate in 1,2-dichloroethane, forms in the first, fast kinetic step both linear polymer and cyclic dimer (D_4NMe). Subsequently a slow depolymerization process occurs leading to exclusively cyclotrisilazane (D_3NMe). On the basis of kinetic measurements carried out using an adiabatic calorimetric technique and complementary experiments, mechanisms of both propagation, cyclization and back-biting reactions are proposed. The influence of the reaction temperature was also studied; it is demonstrated that, at low temperature, polymerization does not lead to cyclic oligomer formation. In such conditions, the polymerization presents a ‘living’ character.     

Microwave heating of poly(ethylene terephthalate) bottle preforms used in the thermoforming process

Thermoforming (free blowing) of poly(ethylene terephthalate) preforms was successfully and quickly performed in a rotating system designed for dielectric hysteresis heating. Temperature profile modeling was carried out with the amorphous poly(ethylene terephthalate) permittivity at different temperatures. The Maxwell and heat equations were used to determine the best profile and power tuning. The determination of the theoretical boundary conditions was accomplished by the adjustment of the numerical transient external surface wall temperature with experimental infrared pyrometry results. In comparison with infrared, microwaves allowed high power density absorption inside the perform wall without a dramatic temperature gradient. Consequently, the heat blowing stage could be accelerated, and the process took at least 5 times less energy than infrared heating. Towards a new definition of EPOC parameters for anionic electrochemical catalysts: case of propene combustion

The electrochemical promotion of catalysis (EPOC) of propene combustion was investigated using Pt sputtered thin film on an O²⁻ conductor, 8 mol% Y₂O₃-stabilized-ZrO₂ (YSZ). In order to separate the influence of the thermal migration of the O²⁻ oxide ions from the electrolyte to the catalyst surface and the impact of an electrical polarization on the catalytic activity, several light-off experiments (cool down and heat up procedures) were successively performed under different polarizations, i.e. OCV, +2 and −2 V. These experiments have clearly shown that the presence of O²⁻ (thermally or electrochemically induced) inhibits the catalytic activity of the platinum for the propene deep oxidation. These results demonstrate the importance to define a normalized rate enhancement ratio, ρ _n , from a reference value of the catalytic rate corresponding to a Pt surface state free of O²⁻ ions.     

Factors influencing the efficacy of an interfacial modifier for the interface in an immiscible polymer blend

The modification of the interface in immiscible polymer blends is critical in order to optimize physical properties. Despite the great commercial importance of polymer blends, many aspects of the emulsification process remain unclear In this paper, it will be shown that an emulsification curve can be used to estimate the influence of the architecture molar mass of styrene/hydrogenated butadiene block copolymer interfacial modifiers on the emulsifion of polystyrene/ethylene-propylene rubber blends under melt processing conditions. An expression for eing the critical amount of copolymer to saturate the interface, as well as aspects concerning the localisation of the modifier in the blend system will also be addressed.     

What defense doesSchouwia purpurea (Cruciferae) have against the desert locust?

A field study of the food eaten by solitary desert locusts was carried out in a winter breeding area in Mauritania. The food eaten, determined by the plant epidermis found in fecal pellets, was compared to the plant's availability in the habitat.Schouwia purpurea, well represented in the diets, was dominant at the study site. Adults had a preference forTribulus terrester. Growth and feeding on these two plants were compared. The high water content ofS. purpurea leaves limited the dry matter eaten and slowed down growth. Glucosinolates were separated and quantified by gas chromatography. There are 132mol/g dry matter in green leaves. In multiple choice tests, with paper disks, glucosinolate extracts were phagostimulant at a low concentration (21mol/g dry matter) and repulsive at a higher one (214mol/ g dry matter). Biting behavior onS. purpurea was recorded and analyzed on video. The importance ofSchouwia purpurea in desert locust habitats and its defenses is discussed.     

Polymer electrolytes

Summary The room temperature conductivity of lithium salts dissolved in polyethylene oxide, proposed as polymer electrolytes, is shown to decrease drastically upon storage. The crystallization process, which is responsible for that ageing, can be blocked, if two further components are added : an elastomer copolymer butadiene-acrylonitrile and a macromer of polyoxyethylene. In addition, a crosslinking process must be carried out.     

Preparation of optically active poly β-propiolactones

Racemic -methyl--n-propyl--propiolactone is readily polymerized with zinc and cadmium chiral glycolates leading to optically active polyesters. The stereoelectivities observed are lower than for oxiranes and thiiranes with the same initiator system. A value of rotatory power for pure enantiomer _o, is deduced from NMR measurements in the presence of chiral solvent. The structure of polymers is discussed on the basis of NMR results.     

Measurement of enterprise knowledge by state characterization

Abstract: Enterprise production is becoming more and more knowledge oriented nowadays and knowledge management is playing a key role in making commercial profit and maintaining enterprise competence. Knowledge characterization and measurement are the bases of knowledge management, and this paper aims to develop a method for characterizing and measuring knowledge in a comprehensive and practical way. Knowledge in its static state is modelled as a vector, whose values vary with the situation, and changes in state are modelled as a finite state machine.
