Antitubercular activity of lomefloxacin in an experiment

The effect of lomefloxacin was studied on mice with experimental infection due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The antibiotic was administered in doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg. It was shown that the use of lomefloxacin for a month provided a lower death rate of the animals with progressing acute generalized tuberculosis, a lower level of the lesions in the internal organs and a lower number of the Mycobacterium isolates from them. The efficacy of the treatment depended on the drug dose. When lomefloxacin was used in a dose of 200 mg/kg, the survival rate was much higher and the number of the epithelial unicellular granulomas in the tissue of the lung and spleen was markedly decreased while with the lower dose the indices did not differ from those in the control.     

A contribution to the theory of parametric excitation of thermomechanical oscillations

The conditions for a rather fast increase in parametric thermomechanical oscillations have been revealed by using numerical solutions of some types of Hill's equation. It is shown that the occurrence of a real parametric resonance is essentially determined by the character of thermal modulations. It is hypothesized that the indicated trends are observed in oscillations of any physical nature.Stavropol State Pedagogical Institute, Stavropol. Human gamma-interferon expression in the mammary gland of transgenic mice

Transgenic mice carrying a hybrid gene consisting of ovine beta-lactoglobulin gene sequences and human gamma-interferon (hIFN-g) cDNA were produced. hIFN-g expression in the mammary gland of two lactating transgenic founder females was found. The concentration of active hIFN-g in the milk was estimated as being ca. 1800 IU/ml. The hIFN-g ability to express in the mammary gland was found in the progeny of transgenic founder male.     

Prophylactic effect of enteral feeding preparations during the chemotherapy of oncology patients

Altogether 124 patients were followed up for disseminated breast cancer (82) and hematosarcoma (42). The patients were divided into two groups: the main group was given 500 ml of 20% protein or low-lactose enteral feeding in addition to the hospital diet; the control group received only the hospital diet. Chemotherapy lasted 3 weeks. The patients on chemotherapy received enteral feeding every day throughout the entire treatment period. In the course of treatment, the patients were examined for blood characteristics, size of the tumor and affected lymph nodes, body weight, major metabolism, protein metabolism, vitamin metabolism, osmotic and peroxide resistance of red cells, and liver function. The research program covered more than 150 characteristics. The data obtained were processed by computer. It has been disclosed that inclusion of protein and low-lactose enteral feeding into the diet of cancer patients improves the alimentary status, decreases the leukopenia and thrombocytopenia incidence. It is advisable that specialized milk concentrates (enteral feeding) should be included into the diet of cancer patients as a necessary component of a complex of therapeutic measures used during chemotherapy.     

Synthesis of phosphorus-, zinc-, and chlorine-containing poly(ethylene terephthalate)

Phosphorus-, zinc-, and chlorine-containing oligomer was used as a comonomer including ionic bonds in its molecules in the synthesis of poly(ethylene terephthalate). Phosphorus-, zinc-, and chlorine-containing poly(ethylene terephthalate) including ionic bonds in its main polymer chain was synthesized. With a content of 0.6% P and 1.25% Zn and 0.1% Cl, the resin has the following characteristics: η_rel = 1.407; COOH 39.90 mg equiv KOH/g 10^?6; and mp 255.8°C. New steel of grade 15KhGNMFA is suggested for heavy-duty parts of powerful hydraulic presses. Full-scale testing of the steel has shown that preforms fabricated from it have high strength and ductility characteristics, and the level of their impact toughness substantially exceeds that of steel 25GS used earlier for such parts.
