Analysis of 24,444 surgical specimens accessioned over 55 years in an ophthalmic pathology laboratory

PURPOSE: To summarize the pathologic diagnoses of a large number of surgically-obtained specimens over an extended time period in a single ophthalmic pathology laboratory. METHODS: We analyzed the records of 24,444 surgically obtained specimens accessioned in the L.F. Montgomery Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory, Emory University, Atlanta, GA between May 1941 and December 1995. Age, sex, topography, clinical procedure, and histologic diagnosis were entered into a database using the modified SNOMED coding system. The diagnosis of the surgically enucleated eyes were analyzed with respect to years of enucleation. RESULTS: The most common topographic area associated with a histologic diagnosis was the cornea (39.3%), followed by lens (16.0%), vitreous (12.0%), uvea (9.8%), eyelids (8.0%), conjunctiva (7.7%), retina (7.7%), and orbit (2.1%). The relative proportion of vitreous specimens has continuously increased and became the most common surgical specimen in 1995. The most common underlying disease of surgically enucleated eyes is trauma (40.9%), followed by ocular neoplasia (24.2%), 'surgical' diseases of the cornea, lens and retina including glaucoma (17.3%), vascular diseases (6.7%), and inflammatory conditions (6.7%). The relative frequency of trauma and ocular inflammation as a cause of enucleation decreased significantly (p < 0.05) over the time of the study period while the relative proportion of ocular neoplastic processes increased (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: The availability of new surgical techniques has caused a change in the relative frequencies of different ocular specimens submitted for histologic examination.     

在小型计算机上实现彩色地震剖面显示的尝试

彩色地震剖面显示是地震剖面显示技术中较为先进的一种显示方式.它具有常规黑白显示剖面所无法比拟的优点.尤其是在一些特殊处理显示的剖面(诸如三瞬剖面、虚速度测井剖面以及烃类显示剖面)中,这些剖面给人以清晰直观和一目了然的感觉.但是,目前彩色剖面在国内尚未得到普遍地应用,其原因之一是由于彩色显示处理要求计算机具有大的内存容量和高速运算等方面的性能,所以一般都是在大中型计算机上处理.而小型计算机由于内存容量和运算速度等面存在着不足,所以难以运行象现今国内所使用的UNIRAS这样庞大的系统.笔者在研究了UNIRAS系统的实现原理后,另辟蹊径,在只有32k内存容量又无虚拟存贮管理系统的TEMPUSⅡ小型计算机上,采用光栅处理技术,实现了地震剖面彩色显示,并取得了令人满意的结果.     

Effect of process parameters on impact strength of Al-7% Si alloy castings produced by VAEPC process

The castings produced by the evaporative pattern casting (EPC) process have blow holes. The blow holes in EPC castings are because of the non-escape of the gas produced as a result of burning of polystyrene pattern in the sand mold. To overcome the problem of blow holes, the EPC process is combined with the vacuum (V)- process. The vacuum applied to EPC mold draws the decomposed gases and improves the casting quality produced by the EPC process. The developed hybrid process has been termed as the vacuum assisted evaporative pattern casting (VAEPC) process. The objective of this paper to investigates the effect of process parameters, i.e, degree of vacuum, pouring temperature, grainfineness number, amplitude of vibration and time of vibration on the impact strength of Al-7% Si alloy castings in VAEPC process. In order to evaluate the effect of selected process parameters, the response surface methodology (RSM) is used to formulate a mathematical model which correlates the independent process parameters with the desired impact strength. The central composite rotatable design has been used to conduct the experiments. The results indicate that the impact strength decreases with increases in the grainfineness number and pouring temperature. Whereas, it has an inverse relationship with amplitude of vibration, time of vibration and degree of vacuum. The best value of impact strength (2.34 N/mm²) has been obtained at 400 mm Hg degree of vacuum imposed, 650°C as pouring temperature, 60 as sand grainfineness number, 460 μm as amplitude of vibration, and 70 s as time of vibration.     

Similarity retrieval of iconic image database

The perception of spatial relationships among objects in a picture is one of the important selection criteria to discriminate and retrieve the images in an iconic image database system. The data structure called 2D string, proposed by Chang et al., is adopted to represent symbolic pictures. The 2D string preserves the objects' spatial knowledge embedded in images. Since spatial relationship is a fuzzy concept, the capability of similarity retrieval for the retrieval by subpicture is essential. In this paper, similarity measure based on 2D string longest common subsequence is defined. The algorithm for similarity retrieval is also proposed. Similarity retrieval provides the iconic image database with the distinguishing function different from a conventional database.

Between 1990 and 1992, external sphincter repair was performed in 20 patients rendered faecally incontinent after earlier fistula surgery. All were improved, 13 (65%) achieving Grade 1 or 2 continence. Postoperative ultrasound was useful in explaining the sub-optimal outcome of 3 patients who still had defects. Clinical outcome in female patients was better than in male patients. Clinical outcome was not related to the results of preoperative manometry, the site of external sphincter damage, the use of a stoma, or the occurrence of wound complications. External sphincter repair for faecal incontinence after fistula surgery achieves good results in the majority of patients.     

Cortisone-induced osteoporosis: effects on bone adenylate cyclase

The majority of patients with soft tissue or bone sarcomas of the upper extremity can be treated today with limb-saving procedures using combined modality therapies. For patients with a tumor in the shoulder area, sometimes an interscapulothoracic amputation is the only radical surgical treatment. However, in selected cases, in which the tumor does not involve the neurovascular bundle, a limb-sparing alternative might be the Tikhoff-Linberg resection. Normal function of the hand and forearm, with reasonable function of the elbow, can be maintained by this procedure. Four case histories are reported.     

Adsorption of 117mSn(Ⅳ)-EDTMP on hydroxyapatite and collagen

In this paper, a prelimi-nary investigation on the adsorption characteristics of EDTMP (ethelenediaminete-tramethylene phosphoric acid) labeled with 117mSn(Ⅳ) on HA(hydroxyapatite) andcollagen, and an investigation on the adsorption mechanism of 117mSn(Ⅳ)-EDTMPon HA was presented.``
