An equation of state for 1,1-difluroethane (HFC 152a)

An equation of state for 1,1-difluoroethane (HFC 152a, CH₃CHF₂) has been developed on the basis of reliable experimental data including PVT, liquid C_p, and saturated-liquid-density data measured by our group. It is a non-dimensionalized virial equation whose functional form is the same as that originally developed for 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC 134a) in our group. The effective range is for pressures up to 15 MPa, temperatures from 230 to 450 K, and densities to 1000 kg m⁻³. The equation represents reliable PVT measurements within ± 1% in pressure for the superheated vapour and supercritical fluid, while within ±0.5% in density for the compressed liquid. In addition, it should be noted that the equation represents the other essential thermodynamic properties including vapour pressures, saturated-liquid/ vapour densities, isobaric/isochoric specific heats and sound velocity in both the liquid and gaseous phase of HFC 152a.

Rapid determination of the membrane potential of mitochondria in small biopsy specimens of the liver

In liver transplantation, graft viability is ideally to be determined before implantation. Integrity of mitochondria may be a prerequisite to a viable graft. A new method is presented, which allows for the determination of the membrane potential of mitochondria (MPM; mV) in state 4 respiration within 50 min in 40-mg specimens, employing rhodamine 123 as a probe. Normal control showed a MPM of 239.2 mV. Storage in saline at 37 degrees C yielded an impaired MPM of 153.5 mV within 3 h. The cold storage at 1 degree C could preserve MPM at quasi-normal after 3 h but reduced it significantly after 24 h to 222.2 mV in saline (p < 0.005 vs. control) and 231.0 mV in UW solution (p < 0.05 vs. control): the difference between the 24-hour values was significant (p < 0.05).     

Colorimetric microdetermination of sulphites in foods by use of the modified rankine apparatus. IV.

Summary Detection and determination of traces of sulphites in foods was attempted by use of the modified Rankine apparatus and pararosaniline colorimetry. Replacement of alkaline titration reported previously by pararosaniline colorimetry lowered the absolute detection limit from 30 g (titration method) to 2 g. In view of clean analysis, in the color developing system, 0.1 N-sodium hydroxide was used in place of mercuric chloride solution commonly used as an absorbant of sulphites. In order to prevent oxidative decomposition of sulphites during operation, nitrogen gas was used as carrier instead of air. Dimedone and sodium azide were used for the elimination of aldehydes and nitrites, respecitvely, in the sample, which will disturb the color development of sulphites with pararosaniline-formaldehyde reagents. With this improved method, it was possible to determine the residual sulphites in frozen peeled shrimps, sugared beans and other foods with low sulphite contents accurately.

Colorimetrische Mikrobestimmung von Sulfiten in Lebensmitteln bei Anwendung der modifizierten IV. Rankine Apparatur

Zusammenfassung Geringe Sulfitmengen in Lebensmitteln (geschälte Garnelen, gezuckerte Bohnen) können colorimetrisch bestimmt werden. Die neuentwickelte Methode beruht auf einer Kombination von colorimetrischer Bestimmung mittels p-Rosanilin und der Bestimmungsmethode nach Rankine. Auf diese Weise lassen sich Gehalte von 2 g noch genau bestimmen. Bei der Farbentwicklung wurde das giftige Quecksilbertetrachlorid durch 0.1 n-NaOH ersetzt, anstelle von Luft Stickstoff als Trägergas verwendet und somit eine Oxydation des Sulfits während der Bestimmung vermieden. Da Nitrit und Aldehyde die Farbentwicklung stören, wurde ihr Einfluß durch Dimedon und Natriumazid ausgeschaltet.

Studies on the Analyses of Sulphites in Foods (IV)     

Genomic and Immunological Characterization of Hypermucoviscous Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae ST25 Isolates from Northwest Argentina

In recent years, an increase in the prevalence hypermucoviscous carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae with sequence type 25 (ST25) was detected in hospitals of Tucuman (Northwest Argentina). In this work, the virulence and the innate immune response to two K. pneumoniae ST25 strains (LABACER 01 and LABACER 27) were evaluated in a murine model after a respiratory challenge. In addition, comparative genomics was performed with K. pneumoniae LABACER01 and LABACER27 to analyze genes associated with virulence. Both LABACER01 and LABACER27 were detected in the lungs of infected mice two days after the nasal challenge, with LABACER01 counts significantly higher than those of LABACER27. Only LABACER01 was detected in hemocultures. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and albumin levels in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples were significantly higher in mice challenged with LABACER01 than in LABACER27-infected animals, indicating greater lung tissue damage. Both strains increased the levels of neutrophils, macrophages, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, KC, MCP-1, IFN-γ, and IL-17 in the respiratory tract and blood, with the effect of LABACER01 more marked than that of LABACER27. In contrast, LABACER27 induced higher levels of IL-10 in the respiratory tract than LABACER01. Genomic analysis revealed that K. pneumoniae LABACER01 and LABACER27 possess virulence factors found in other strains that have been shown to be hypervirulent, including genes required for enterobactin (entABCDEF) and salmochelin (iroDE) biosynthesis. In both strains, the genes of toxin–antitoxin systems, as well as regulators of the expression of virulence factors and adhesion genes were also detected. Studies on the genetic potential of multiresistant K. pneumoniae strains as well as their cellular and molecular interactions with the host are of fundamental importance to assess the association of certain virulence factors with the intensity of the inflammatory response. In this sense, this work explored the virulence profile based on genomic and in vivo studies of hypermucoviscous carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae ST25 strains, expanding the knowledge of the biology of the emerging ST25 clone in Argentina.     

Theoretical high-efficiency extraction study of a short-pulseelectron-beam-pumped ArF laser amplifier with atmospheric pressureAr-rich mixtures

The single-pass (50 cm) amplifier performance of an atmospheric-pressure ArF laser pumped by a 65-ns full-width-at-half-maximum short-pulse electron beam was investigated theoretically for a wide range of excitation rates (0.1-2.0 MW/cm³ ). Atmospheric mixtures of Ne, Ar, and F₂ (three mixtures of Ar=40%, 70%, and Ne-free) were studied. A kinetic numerical model of the ArF amplifier with a Ne buffer system was constructed. A one-dimensional propagation treatment considered the gain depletion and saturation absorption spatially and temporally along the optical axis. In this model the rate constants for electron quenching of ArF* of 1.6×10^-7, 1.9×10^-7, and 2.4×10 ^-7 cm³/s were used for Ar concentration of 40, 70 percent, and Ar/F₂ mixture, respectively     

An Investigation of Capacitors for Flying Capacitor Converters

Multilevel converters can essentially reduce harmonics even when their switching frequency is low. Among the various topologies of the multilevel converters, flying capacitor converters are considered to be promising converters for realizing high power density. However, the main circuit of the flying capacitor converters has many capacitors. Therefore, in this study, the volume of the capacitors in the flying capacitor converters is determined by taking into consideration the allowable ripple voltage and temperature rise in the capacitor. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Analysis of a fuel cell micro-grid with a small-scale wind turbine generator

If electric power is supplied using an independent micro-grid connected to renewable energy, it can flexibly match the energy demand characteristics of a local area. And an independent micro-grid is expected to be effective in cutting greenhouse gas discharge and energy costs, as well as in eliminating the need for an emergency power supply system. Since the output of renewable energy is unstable, other energy equipment needs to cover the stability of output. Thus, the operating conditions of an independent micro-grid that supplies power with natural power sources and fuel cells are investigated. The operation conditions of a fuel-cell independent micro-grid with wind power generation were investigated by numerical analysis. Step loads and an apartment house power load model were analyzed using the dynamic characteristics of a fuel cell obtained from experiments. The output of wind power generation and fuel cells is controlled by proportional-integral control of an independent micro-grid for rapid power demand change.
