To make personalised medicine a reality, there is a significant need for cost-effective methods that enable the rapid selection of optimal nutrient intake and/or disease treatment with a minimum of side effects. The growth of fatigue cracks in compact tension specimens of rigid polyurethane foam has been studied at room temperature under conditions of constant load-amplitude cycling. The growth of the cracks at the frequencies employed (0.2 Hz) is found to be reasonably reproducible and the growth rate can be related to the cyclic stress intensity range in the conventional way. The rate of growth of the cracks is also found to depend on the mean stress level and an attempt has been made to separate out the effects of stress-intensity range, K, and the maximum stress intensity in each cycle, K max, by combining the data obtained under a variety of loading conditions.  相似文献

This review paper discusses the preparation of silicalite-1 zeolite membranes, the experimental procedures used for gas separation measurements and the results of single gas and gas mixture experiments. Silicalite-alumina composite membranes were prepared by an in-situ zeolite synthesis method using an alumina membrane tube with a 5-nm-pore-diameter, γ-alumina layer as a substrate. Single gas permeances of H2, Ar, n-C4H10, i-C4H10 and SF6 were measured and mixtures of H2/i-C4H10 and H2/SF6 were separated to characterize the silicalite membrane. These measurements were made from 300 to 737 K. Transport through the silicalite membrane appeared to be controlled by molecular size and adsorption properties. Permeances of all components studied were activated, and activation energies ranged from 8.5 to 16.2 kJ/mol. The ratio of single gas permeances was as high as 136 for H2/SF6 and 1100 for H2/i-C4H10 at 298 K. Separation selectivities at elevated temperatures were significantly above Knudsen diffusion selectivity and were larger than ratios of pure gas permeances at the same temperature. The largest permeance ratio for the separation of mixtures was 12.8 for H2/SF6 at 583 K. Separation selectivities were higher when a pressure drop was maintained across the membrane than when an inert sweep gas was used because of counter diffusion of the sweep gas.  相似文献

The exact lifespan of in-use firefighter protective clothing is difficult to predict due to the large variations in use between individual garments. Furthermore, testing methods used to evaluate new protective clothing are destructive in nature and could not be applied to in-use garments. Various non-destructive techniques have been proposed for the evaluation of in-use clothing, each possessing its own advantages and disadvantages. The ability of near-infrared spectroscopy to predict the tensile strength of thermally aged fabrics used in protective clothing for wildland firefighters and other workers is investigated here. Fabrics were exposed to heat fluxes from 10 kW/m2 to 40 kW/m2 for various durations using the cone calorimeter, after which the tensile strength of the fabrics was measured. Temperatures measured during the exposures and results of thermal gravimetric analysis tests were used to interpret changes in tensile strength. Multivariate linear regression was used to develop correlations between the tensile strength and the reflectance values measured between 1500 nm and 2500 nm for new and thermally aged fabrics. It was found that models based on reflectance measurements made at as few as three wavelengths could be used to estimate the tensile strength of the thermally aged specimens.  相似文献

The development of adipose tissue in the chick embryo was investigated using two groups of fertile eggs which differed by 1.7-fold in their initial yolk lipid levels. The triacylglycerol content of the subcutaneous adipose depot in both groups increased dramatically from day 12 of the 21-day embryonic period, attaining a maximal value just prior to hatching. During this period, the amount of triacylglycerol deposited in the adipose tissue was very highly correlated with the amount of lipid transferred from the yolk. The triacylglycerol content of the depot was also dependent on the initial yolk lipid content. During the hatching period, the amount of adipose triacylglycerol remained approximately constant in the group with the higher initial yolk lipid content but, in the case of the group with the lower initial yolk lipid levels, decreased by approximately 25%. The size distribution of adipocytes isolated from the tissue was determined by computerized image analysis microscopy. The mean adipocyte diameter increased from approximately 6 to 35 μm between days 12 and 19, irrespective of the initial yolk content, although development within the eggs with the lower initial yolk content resulted in a decrease in cell size over the hatching period. Both the triacylglycerol and phospholipid fractions of the isolated adipocytes contained substantial proportions (approximately 6%, w/w) of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) at days 12 and 14, and lower levels of this fatty acid at the later stages. The amount (mg/depot) of DHA in adipose triacylglycerol decreased dramatically over the hatching period. The amount (mg/brain) of DHA in brain phospholipid increased by more than 5-fold between day 12 of development and hatching. A possible explanation for the data may be that DHA is preferentially mobilized from adipose tissue in order to deliver the fatty acid to the developing neural tissues in a form suitable for uptake.  相似文献

Accounting for light that is diffusely scattered from a surface is one of the practical challenges in reflectance measurement. Integrating spheres are commonly used for this purpose in point measurements of reflectance and transmittance. This solution is not directly applicable to a spectral imaging application for which diffuse reflectance measurements are desired. In this paper, an imaging spectrophotometer design is presented that employs a uniform light source to provide diffuse illumination. This creates the inverse measurement geometry to the directional illumination/diffuse reflectance mode typically used for point measurements. The final system had a spectral range between 400 and 1000 nm with a 5.2 nm resolution, a field of view of approximately 0.5 m by 0.5 m, and millimeter spatial resolution. Testing results indicate illumination uniformity typically exceeding 95% and reflectance precision better than 1.7%.  相似文献

Sulfated alkanolamides of hydrogenated tallow fatty acids have been shown to possess excellent lime soap dispersing and detergent properties. However the high melting points of the alkanolamides and their relative insolubility in organic solvents such as dichloroethane make sulfation on an industrial scale awk ward. This difficulty has been overcome by the use of a eutectic mixture of the N-(2-hydroxypropyl)amide and N-(2-[2-hydroxyethoxy]ethyl)amide of unhydrogenated tallow fatty acids. The sulfation of such a mixture can be carried out at or slightly above room temperature, and only a small amount of a chlorinated solvent is required in order to keep the sulfation mixture fluid. The resulting sulfated mixed alkanolamide is an excellent lime soap dispersing agent, which is formulated readily with tallow soap and a glassy silicate into an effective heavy duty detergent.  相似文献
