The measured plastic deformation of Mg-PSZ under stress contains contributions from both transformation and microcracking. A method is described to separate the contributions from transformation and microcracking for samples deformed in uniaxial tension. Such a separation enables the ratio of the longitudinal to transverse strains arising from the transformation to be estimated. The results are compared to the predictions of the shear–dilatation model of Chen and Reyes-Morel. Serious discrepancies are found between the experimental results and the predictions of the model and the possible reason for this is discussed. 相似文献

Urbanisation results in changes to runoff behaviour which, if not addressed, inevitably degrade receiving waters. To date, most stormwater management has focussed on the streetscape and public open space. Given that much of the catchment imperviousness is located on private land, we developed and tested a novel economic instrument (a uniform price auction) for encouraging allotment-scale stormwater retention. We evaluated bids using an integrated environmental benefit index (EBI), based on the ability of the proposed works to reduce runoff frequency, pollutant loads and to reduce potable water demand. The uniform price auction resulted in 1.4 ha of impervious areas being effectively 'disconnected' from the stormwater system. The EBI provided an objective and transparent method of comparing bids, which varied in the type of works proposed (e.g. rainwater tank, rain-garden), the cost and the resulting environmental benefit. Whilst the pilot auction was a success, the public subsidy of works undertaken was around 85%, meaning that property owners a relatively small private benefit in the works. Future auction rounds will be revised to (i) test an EBI which is more focussed on the protection of streams (assessing changes to runoff frequency, baseflow volumes and water quality) and (ii) provide an auction process which is simpler to understand, and provides greater practical support for landholders who wish to undertake works. 相似文献

A compact multiband planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) suitable for distributed radio-over-fiber repeater networks is modified into a planar structure. It is shown that the planar antenna performance is not degraded with respect to the original PIFA and further, a two layer design is demonstrated to offer improved feed matching. The European bands for GSM, DCS-1800, DECT, UMTS, Bluetooth and HiperLAN2 are all covered. A model of the antenna is introduced as a first stage to developing an equivalent circuit. 相似文献

A series of first generation dendrimers provide important insight into the performance of dye-sensitised solar cells (DSSCs). The dendrimers are comprised of a substituted [cis-di(thiocyanato)-bis(2,2′-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) complex, first generation biphenyl-based dendrons, and either four, eight, or twelve 2-ethylhexyloxy surface groups. The dendrimers were bound to the titanium dioxide of the DSSCs via carboxylate groups on one of the bipyridyl moieties in a similar manner to the ‘gold standard’ [cis-di(thiocyanato)-bis(4,4′-dicarboxylate-2,2′-bipyridyl)]ruthenium(II) 1 (N3). Exchanging one pair of the carboxylate groups on one bipyridyl ligand of N3 with styryl units to give [cis-di(thiocyanato)-(4,4′-dicarboxylate-2,2′-bipyridyl)-(4,4′-distyryl-2,2′-bipyridyl]ruthenium(II) 2 resulted in an improvement in device performance (7.19% ± 0.11% for 2 versus 6.94% ± 0.12% for N3). Devices containing the dendrimers also had good efficiencies but the performance was found to decrease with the increasing number of surface groups, which gives rise to an increase in the molecular volume of the dye. The device containing the dendrimer with four surface groups, 3, had a global efficiency of 6.32% ± 0.13%, which was comparable to N3 (6.94% ± 0.12%) in the same device configuration. In contrast, the dendrimer with twelve surface groups, 5, had an efficiency of 3.69% ± 0.19%. Complex 2 and all three dendrimers have the same core chromophore, which absorbs more light than N3. The decrease in efficiency with increasing molecular volume was therefore determined to be due to less dye being adsorbed. Hence molecular volume and molar extinction coefficient are both first order parameters in achieving high conversion efficiencies and must be taken into account when designing new dyes for DSSCs. 相似文献

We demonstrate a process for realising mesoporous silicon from a range of land-based plants such as common grasses, bamboos, sugarcane and rice. Such plants act as ??natural factories??, converting and concentrating vast quantities of soluble silicon in soil into nanostructured forms of silica in their roots, stems, branches or leaves. This porous biogenic silica is chemically extracted and then thermally reduced to porous silicon using magnesium vapor. Importantly, for larger batch size, an inexpensive thermal moderator such as salt, is added for control of the reaction exotherm and minimization of sintering. Mesoporous silicon of >350?m2/g with 8?nm wide pores has been obtained from a bamboo extract, for example. The same process is applicable to a wide range of ??silicon accumulator plants??. The purity of this ??naturally derived?? porous silicon is likely to be raised to a level acceptable for a wide range of high volume applications outside of electronics and solar cell technology. 相似文献

The professional and economic challenges to psychologists posed by organized medicine have been stymied in the past by the Federal Trade Commission and by strict enforcement of the antitrust laws. Now that professionals' competition and consumer choice are being supported in the courts, the American Medical Association (AMA) is redoubling its efforts to retain a monopolistic hold on health care, hospital practice, and health insurance throughout the nation. Organized psychology, with the help of other professions and the Congress, has barely held the line against politically and economically stronger forces. The Association for the Advancement of Psychology and the American Psychological Association actively opposed the AMA's proposed legislation in 1981 and 1982 that would have allowed the AMA to circumvent valid law. The medical profession has actively worked to control all health care and deny psychologists hospital staff privileges, preventing group practice between physicians and psychologists, denying them health insurance reimbursement, and restricting psychological services to physician supervision. New genome sequence information is rapidly increasing the number of nucleic acid (NA) targets of use for characterizing and treating diseases. Detection of these targets by fluorescence-based assays is often limited by fluorescence background from unincorporated or unbound probes that are present in large excess over the target. To solve this problem, energy transfer-based probes have been developed and used to reduce the fluorescence from unbound probes. Although these probes have revolutionized NA target detection, their use requires scrupulous attention to design constraints, extensive probe quality control, and individually optimized experimental conditions. Here, we describe a simpler background reduction approach using singly labeled quencher oligomers to suppress excess unbound probe fluorescence following probe-target hybridization. A second limitation of most fluorescence-based NA target detection and quantification assays is the requirement for enzymatic amplification of target or signal for sensitivity. Amplification steps make quantification of original target copy number problematic because of variations in amplification efficiencies between the sequence targets and the experimental conditions. To avoid amplification, we coupled our quenching approach to a two-color NA assay with correlated, two-color, single-molecule fluorescence detection. We demonstrate a >100-fold background reduction and detection of targets present at concentrations as low as 100 fM using the two-color assay. The application of this technique to the detection and quantification of specific mRNA sequences enabled us to estimate beta-actin copy numbers in cell-derived total RNA without an amplification step. 相似文献

A narrow band antenna of dimensions 0.54λ x 0.28λ x 0.09λ is presented. The design is suited for use in cellular Radio-over-Fibre networks. Associated mobile equipment using the international unlicensed WiMAX band (5.470-5.725 GHz) is also described. The antenna is well matched across the band and is suitable for a full-duplex bi-directional system with simultaneous transmission (Tx) and reception (Rx). It can be used with mobile handsets offering WiMAX connections, and in multi-sector configurations for vehicular communication systems. 相似文献
