Significant economic savings can be achieved by improving the wear lifetime of precision manufacturing tools through nitrogen-ion implantation. This near-ambient temperature, surface modification process preserves dimensional integrity and surface finish while eliminating delamination problems that are often associated with overlay coatings. Conventional ion implantation is a line-of-sight process which requires elaborate manipulation and masking to uniformly implant components of complex shapes. A recently developed process, plasma source ion implantation (PSII), circumvents this line-of-sight restriction and makes ion implantation more attractive economically. In this article, the effects of PSII of nitrogen at a target bias of 50 kV, to a dose of 0.3 × 1018 atoms/cm2 on the surface microstructure and mechanicalproperties of AISI S1 tool steel are presented.  相似文献

In order to investigate the effects of freezing and thawing on the compressibility of fine-grained soils, freezing and thawing tests and subsequent compression tests with fine-grained soils in an oedometer were carried out. During the freezing, a part of the soils is loosened and another part is over-consolidated under the freezing pressure ?E. The compression curves after the freezing and thaw consolidation are neither different from the normal consolidation curve nor from the rebound curve of an unfrozen soil, until the consolidation pressure ?z = ?E is arrived. Based on the experimental results, a theoretical model has been developed to predict the frost heaves, the thaw-settlements and the compressive deformations of fine-grained soils after the thaw consolidation. In a field trial, effects of prepartal intermuscular injection of 10 million units of vitamin D3 on incidence of milk fever were examined both in relation to intake of calcium and phosphorous during the dry period and previous history of milk fever. Based upon intake of calcium and phosphorus cooperating herds were grouped as feeding: 1) greater than .53% of the total ration dry matter as calcium and greater than .28% as phosphorus: 2) less than .47% as calcium and greater than .28% as phosphorus; 3) greater than .47% to less than .53% as calcium and greater than .22% to less than .28% as phosphorus. Injections of vitamin D3 given approximately 1 wk prepartum reduced incidence of milk fever in cows with previous history of milk fever in all three groups but had no effect in cows with no previous milk fever. Incidence of milk fever was lower in group 3 than for cows of groups 1 and 2 with previous milk fever and than for cows of group 1 with no previous history. The results indicate that careful control of calcium and phosphorus intake during the dry period at .5% calcium and .25% phosphorus of the dry matter of the total ration will limit milk fever incidence to about 10%. Injections of vitamin D3 as described will reduce inicidence of milk fever further in cows with previous milk fever but not in cows with no previous milk fever.  相似文献

The plastic deformation kinetics of electrodeposited (EP) Cu foil (grain size d=0.6 μm) were determined at 296–448 K and compared with those for vapor-deposited (VP) foil (d=0.5 μm) tested at 77–473 K. The apparent activation volume v=kT ∂ ln for both materials exhibited a minimum at ∼350 K, and at this temperature, there occurred a marked increase in the temperature dependence of the flow stress σ. The rate-controlling mechanism in both materials at T<373 K appears to be grain boundary shear induced by dislocation pileups at the grain boundaries. The results at T=373–473 K suggest that the dislocation pileups are relieved or prevented and that either cross slip or intersection of dislocations is rate controlling with stronger support for the latter. The determination of the rate-controlling mechanism at the higher temperatures is complicated by possible changes in defect structure due to thermal annealing, and therefore, the operative mechanism corresponds to a structure that may differ from the initial, as-deposited condition.  相似文献

Neuronal cell networks have been reconstructed on planar microelectrode arrays (MEAs) from dissociated hippocampal pyramidal neurons. Microcontact printing (microCP) and a photoresist-liftoff method were used to selectively localize poly-L-lysine (PLL) on the surface of MEAs. Haptotaxis led to the organization of the neurons into networks localized adjacent to microelectrodes. Various grids of PLL with 2-25-microm-wide lines spaced by 50-200 microm with 15-25-microm nodes at intersection points were used to guide cell body attachment and neurite outgrowth. Bursting activity with spike amplitude attenuation was observed, and multichannel recordings detected instances of coincident firing activity. Finally, we present here an extracellular recording from a approximately 2 microm bundle of guided neurites.  相似文献

Biology uses diffusible oxidants to perform functions that range from signaling to matrix assembly, and these oxidation chemistries offer surprising selectivities. Here, it is reported that mediated electrochemistry can access the richness of such oxidation chemistries. Specifically, electrode‐imposed voltage inputs are used to locally generate oxidized mediators that can diffuse into polymer solutions and induce the formation of covalent bonds for the deposition and functionalization of hydrogels at the electrode surface. Depending on the mediator's redox potential (E0), it is possible to “gate” the voltage inputs to target specific residues (e.g., thiols or amines) and oxidation chemistries. Further, mediators of varying E0 offer different reactivities and thus allow control of reaction‐diffusion rates to modulate the hydrogel's crosslink density and mechanical properties. Importantly, this mediated oxidation can be performed under physiologically relevant conditions to preserve labile biological functionalities (e.g., cell viability and protein function). Finally, it is demonstrated that protein fusion tags can be engineered to have “targetable” amino acid residues that enable protein function to be oxidatively conjugated to electrodeposited hydrogels. In summary, mediated electrochemistry can engage orthogonal oxidation chemistries to create functionalized matrices and thus mediated electrochemistry should add important capabilities to the electrofabrication toolbox.  相似文献

The growth of the total (Cu3Sn+Cu6Sn) intermetallic compound layer in Cu-60Sn40Pb solder joints during static annealing at 50°C to 150°C was described by the equation hi=ho+Ao exp(−Qa/RT)tp with ho=0–0.3 μm, p=0.38–0.70, Ao=1.9×10−4–3.4×10−4 m/sp, and Qa=25.5–30.9 kJ/mole. These constants are within the range of those obtained by others and give values of Do and Q which are in reasonable accord with those for the diffusion coefficients in Cu3Sn and Cu6Sn5 determined in diffusion couples. The deviation of the values of the time exponent p from the ideal of 0.5 for diffusion growth may be due to inaccuracies or errors pertaining to the measured thickness (especially ho) and the complex nature of the diffusion process.  相似文献
