New and very strong criteria are presented for a priori prediction of the conditions for which the steady-state lumped parameter model of an nth order chemical reaction (n ≥ 0) in an adiabatic CSTR has either a unique or multiple solutions. The criteria show that the higher the order of the reaction the smaller is the region in the parameters space for which multiplicity can occur.New uniqueness and multiplicity criteria are developed also for an nth order reaction in a porous catalyst using a model, which accounts for intraparticle concentration gradients, while assuming a uniform intraparticle temperature different from the ambient one. The region in the parameters space for which steady state multiplicity can occur for this model is smaller than that for a corresponding lumped model, which ignores the intraparticle concentration gradients.  相似文献

The sex pheromone of feral sweet potato weevils Cylas formicarius elegantulus from Cuba was found, via solid-phase microextraction analysis, to be identical to (Z)-3-dodecenyl (E)-2-butenoate, a previously reported compound. Females emitted 20 pg pheromone d−1. In scanning electron microscopy studies carried out on the male antenna, we identified several types of sensilla: sensilla trichoidea of type 1 (ST1) as long hairs (100–150 μm), sensilla trichoidea of type 2 as short hairs (50–60 μm), sensilla basiconica of type 1 as thick pegs (20–25 μm), sensilla basiconica of type 2 as curved pegs (10–15 μm), and sensilla basiconica of type 3 as thin and straight short pegs (15–20 μm). The same types were observed in female antennae but ST1 were far less abundant than in males. Sensilla chaetica were also found on the flagellum subsegments in both sexes. In electrophysiological tests, the crotonate function in the pheromone structure proved to be critical for activity since regular depolarizations (0.6–0.8 mV) were obtained with puffs on 1 μg of the attractant, but not with puffs of the formate, acetate, propionate, or butyrate analogue of the pheromone. In a double dual-choice olfactometer, males showed maximum activity between the 4th and the 8th hr of scotophase at a dose of 50–1000 ng of pheromone. In field tests, a correlation between the contents of the Z,E isomer in the pheromone formulation with activity was noticed, and baits containing this isomer of stereomeric purity >94% showed the highest attractivity. The presence of 5% of the Z,Z isomer in the lure did not induce any synergistic or inhibitory effect, and the alcohol precursor of the pheromone was inactive. The results show that use of a stereomerically pure pheromone may not be necessary in pest control strategies.  相似文献

By means of multiphoton laser scanning microscopy, neuroscientists can look inside the brain deeper than has ever been possible before. Multiphoton fluorescent images, as all optical images, suffer from degradation caused by a variety of sources (e.g. light dispersion and absorption in the tissue, laser fluctuations, spurious photodetection and staining deficiency). From a modelling perspective, such degradations can be considered the sum of stochastic noise and a background signal. Among the methods proposed in the literature to perform image deconvolution in either confocal or multiphoton fluorescent microscopy, Vicidomini et al. (2009) were the first to incorporate models for noise (a Poisson process) and background signal (spatially constant) in the context of regularized inverse problems. Unfortunately, the so-called split-gradient deconvolution method (SGM) they used did not consider possible spatial variations in the background signal. In this paper, we extend the SGM by adding a maximum-likelihood estimation step for the determination of a spatially varying background signal. We demonstrate that the assumption of a constant background is not always valid in multiphoton laser microscopy and by using synthetic and actual multiphoton fluorescent images, we evaluate the face of validity of the proposed method, and compare its accuracy with the previously introduced SGM algorithm.  相似文献

In situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) of redox molecules, in aqueous solution, shows interesting analogies and differences compared with interfacial electrochemical electron transfer (ET) and ET in homogeneous solution. This is because the redox level represents a deep indentation in the tunnel barrier, with possible temporary electronic population. Particular perspectives are that both the bias voltage and the overvoltage relative to a reference electrode can be controlled, reflected in spectroscopic features when the potential variation brings the redox level to cross the Fermi levels of the substrate and tip. The blue copper protein azurin adsorbs on gold(111) via a surface disulfide group. Well resolved in situ STM images show arrays of molecules on the triangular gold(111) terraces. This points to the feasibility of in situ STM of redox metalloproteins directly in their natural aqueous medium. Each structure also shows a central brighter contrast in the constant current mode, indicative of 2- to 4-fold current enhancement compared with the peripheral parts. This supports the notion of tunneling via the redox level of the copper atom and of in situ STM as a new approach to long-range electron tunneling in metalloproteins.  相似文献

This paper investigates the use of approximation of state functions in measurement-based transistor models. This is especially important when these models are used in third-order intermodulation distortion simulations since the dynamical spline interpolation that is typically used has possible large discontinuities in its third-order derivative. We, therefore, propose a new representation of the state functions in our model and offer a comparison between measurement and simulation to prove the validity of our approach. Also, our model can easily be implemented in any commercially available SPICE simulator, which also is a significant advantage  相似文献

In reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC), the retention of weak acids and bases is a sigmoidal function of the mobile-phase pH. Therefore, pH is a key chromatographic variable to optimize retention and selectivity. Furthermore, at an eluent pH close to the pKa of the solute, the dependence of ionization of the buffer and solute on temperature can be used to improve chromatographic separations involving ionizable solutes by an adequate handling of column temperature. In this paper, we derive a general equation for the prediction of the retentive behavior of ionizable compounds upon simultaneous changes in mobile-phase pH and column temperature. Four experiments, two limiting pH values and two temperatures, provide the input data that allow predictions in the whole range of these two variables, based on the thermodynamic fundamentals of the involved equilibria. Also, the study demonstrates the significant role that the choice of the buffer compound would have on selectivity factors in RPLC at temperatures higher than 25 degrees C.  相似文献

The article outlines a nine-step process adopted at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center for handling patient requests for medically inappropriate interventions. The main step in the process is review by an Institutional Review Committee composed of the physician-in-chief, ethics committee members, and medical experts. The decision of the Review Committee is binding. The experience with this "futility" policy is discussed including a follow-up pilot project conducted by the Department of Gynaecologic Oncology that introduces a standardized advance care planning medical record progress note in which patient preferences about cardiopulmonary resuscitation, mechanical ventilation, and location of death are documented. The note is to be used at the beginning of non-curative therapy and is intended to help to avoid future requests for futile interventions.  相似文献

We have previously demonstrated that mouse brain membrane fractions have a specific, saturable receptor for diadenylated nucleotides. Binding is specific for two adenosines, and the length of the phosphate bridge is critical, with four phosphates being optimal [Hilderman et al. (1991) J. Biol. Chem. 266, 6915-6918]. In this report, we demonstrate that adenosine 5',5"'-P1,P4-tetraphosphate (Ap4A) binding to its receptor is dependent upon an activation step that requires divalent cations and a serine protease. Monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) are identified that inhibit Ap4A binding to its membrane receptor. These antibodies recognize a 212-kDa membrane protein. However, SDS-PAGE analysis of Ap4A cross-linked to membrane fractions reveals that Ap4A is not attached to the 212-kDa peptide but to a 30-kDa polypeptide. Appearance of the 30-kDa polypeptide is dependent on the activation step, and one of the inhibitory antibodies blocks its appearance. We suggest that the protease-dependent processing step involves cleavage of the 212-kDa component with the appearance of an active 30-kDa receptor.  相似文献

Hydrotalcites in the nitrate form were prepared using microwave irradiation in the hydrotreatment step. The surface area (BET) of nitrated hydrotalcites was evaluated. Solids were characterized by atomic absorption, X-ray diffraction and BET analysis. Thermal pretreatment temperature determined the surface area of the hydrotalcites.  相似文献
