Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a convenient, inexpensive, and noninvasive technique for measuring body composition. BIA has been strongly correlated with total body water (TBW) and also has been validated against hydrodensitometry (HD). The accuracy and clinical utility of BIA and HD during periods of substantial weight loss remain controversial. We measured body composition in moderately and severely obese patients serially using both methods during a very-low-energy diet (VLED). Mean initial weight in these patients was 116 (+/-30) kg (range, 74-196 kg). Mean weight loss was 24 (+/-13) kg with a decrease in fat mass (FM) by HD of kg (p < 0.001) and a decrease in fat-free mass (FFM) of 3.6 kg (p < 0.05). Loss of FFM is best predicted by the rate (kg/wk) of weight loss (r2 = 0.86, p < 0.0001). FFM, as predicted from BIA equations, was highly correlated with FFM as estimated by HD during all testing sessions (r = 0.92-0.98). Although highly correlated, BIA overestimated FFM relative to HD and this difference appeared to be more pronounced for taller patients with greater truncal obesity. Although the discrepancy was no greater during weight-loss treatment, the level of disagreement was considerable. Therefore, the two methods cannot be used interchangeably to monitor relative changes in body composition in patients with obesity during treatment with VLED. The discrepancy between BIA and HD may be caused by body mass distribution considerations and by perturbations in TBW which affect the hydration quotient for FFM (BIA) and/or which affect the density constants for FFM and FM (HD).  相似文献

Theoretical studies have indicated that sufficient fractions of O/sub 2/(/sup 1//spl Delta/) may be produced in an electrical discharge that will permit lasing of an electric discharge oxygen-iodine laser (ElectriCOIL) system. Results of those studies along with more recent experimental results show that electric excitation is a very complicated process that must be investigated with advanced diagnostics along with modeling to better understand this highly complex system. A kinetic package appropriate for the ElectriCOIL system is presented and implemented in the detailed electrodynamic GlobalKin model and the Blaze II chemical laser modeling code. A parametric study with the Blaze II model establishes that it may be possible to attain positive gain in the ElectriCOIL system, perhaps even with subsonic flow. The Blaze II model is in reasonable agreement with early gain data. Temperature is a critical issue, especially in the subsonic cases, and thus it appears that supersonic flow will be important for the ElectriCOIL system. Simulations of a supersonic ElectriCOIL system indicate that it may be possible to attain reasonable performance levels, even at low yield levels of 20% or less. In addition, pre-dissociation of the iodine is shown to be very important for the supersonic flow situation.  相似文献

Safety assessment of oil and gas (O&G) pipelines is necessary to prevent unwanted events that may cause catastrophic accidents and heavy financial losses. This study develops a safety assessment model for O&G pipeline failure by incorporating fuzzy logic into Bayesian belief network. Proposed fuzzy Bayesian belief network (FBBN) model explicitly represents dependencies of events, updating probabilities and representation of uncertain knowledge (such as randomness, vagueness and ignorance). The study highlights the utility of FBBN in safety analysis of O&G pipeline because of its flexible structure, allowing it to fit a wide variety of accident scenarios. The sensitivity analysis of the proposed model indicates that construction defect, overload, mechanical damage, bad installation and quality of worker are the most significant causes for the O&G pipeline failures. The research results can help owners of transmission and distribution pipeline companies and professionals to prepare preventive safety measures and allocate proper resources.  相似文献

The nanoparticles of Ba2RESbO6 (RE = Sm, Gd, Dy and Y) were synthesized using auto ignition combustion process. The structure and phase purity of the as-prepared nanopowders were examined by X-ray diffraction pattern. A systematic analysis of the structure of the four compounds was carried out for the first time by recording Raman and IR spectra. The four Raman active modes A1g, Eg and 2F2g were observed as strong or medium intense bands in the Raman spectra and the IR active F1u(1) mode is obtained as a strong absorption band around 630 cm−1 in all the four compounds. Hence it is confirmed that the above compounds were crystallized in the cubic symmetry with space group.  相似文献
