The management of innovation inevitably implies the management of uncertainty. Research and practise clearly indicate that judgements about the size and the nature of this are often inaccurate. This can result in poor performance against expectations and in some cases in complete failure. In this paper it is argued that prior analysis of the type of uncertainty can help to improve the success rate and/or reduce the time to completion. Early signs that discontinuation, or a significant change in direction, might be called for are also highlighted by this analysis.  相似文献

Manufacture of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in western Europe for all applications is now almost 4 m tonnes and the UK accounts for about 400 kt of this.The aim of this paper is to illustrate the relative importance of PVC as a packaging material where, in the UK for example, for food packaging it accounts for almost 40 kt (10%) of the PVC used.The different types of PVC packaging material—bottles, foil, cling film and cap sealing—and their method of manufacture are described, together with the range of food packaging applications in which they are used. The physical properties of PVC are described and, additionally, its cost and competitiveness with other materials are compared. The chemical nature of PVC compositions arising from the addition of heat stabilisers and plasticisers to achieve the desired properties is also described, with particular reference to heat stability.With the VCM toxicity issue now behind us, and PVC polymer with a maximum level of 1 ppm vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) being supplied for food packaging, PVC must be the most stringently controlled and thoroughly researched material for food packaging. Recent developments in polymerisation technology and polymer manufacture, which have enabled this level to be achieved, are briefly described.The current situation on the global migration issue, on which attention is currently focused, not only for plasticised PVC, but also other packaging materials as well, is briefly reviewed.  相似文献

Sera from 82 cases of leptospirosis (confirmed by micro-agglutination tests or IFAT) and 108 patients with other diseases were investigated using the microcapsule agglutination test (MCAT) for leptospirosis. The overall sensitivity (90.2%), specificity (96.3%), positive predictive value (94.9%), negative predictive value (92.9%), and accuracy of the MCAT (93.7%) were encouraging. MCAT is simple, can be performed by unskilled personnel with minimum laboratory facilities, and produces results in 3 h. MCAT would be a reliable serodiagnostic test for rapidly screening individuals for leptospirosis, in various geographical areas of Thailand.  相似文献

Hen liver preparations which desaturate stearic acid at the 9,10 position to form oleic acid have been found to desaturate other saturated fatty acids of carbon chain length from 12 to 20 and 22. The 9,10-monoenoic fatty acid of the same chain length as the substrate fatty acid is the major product formed. Minor amounts of the 10,11- and 11, 12-monoenoic acids are also formed. Maximum desaturation occurred with the C14 fatty acid substrate and with the fatty acids C17 and C18, suggesting the presence of at least two desaturating systems. The cyclopropene fatty acids, sterculic and malvalic acids, inhibited the desaturation of all thefatty acids at the 9,10 position but desaturation at the 10,11 and 11, 12 positions was affected only slightly. The effect is not due to inhibition of the primary activating enzyme, the long chain acyl CoA synthetase. Sterculic acid is a more effective inhibitor than either malvalic acid or sterculyl alcohol, probably because these cyclopropene compounds do not block the desaturating site of the enzyme as completely as sterculic acid.  相似文献

The objective of this research is to investigate the feasibility of using surface treated recycled rubber particles for toughening of epoxy polymers. These particles are obtained through grinding of scrap tires followed by oxidizing the surface of the particles in a reactive gas atmosphere. Surface treated recycled rubber particles with a nominal particle size of approximately 75 μm and a commonly used reactive liquid elastomer, CTBN, have been incorporated in a DGEBA epoxy resin. It has been shown that the recycled rubber particles are not as effective as CTBN in toughening of the epoxy matrix. However, blending of the two modifiers results in a synergistic toughening. Microscopy reveals that, when used alone, recycled rubber particles simply act as large stress concentrators and modestly contribute to toughening via crack deflection and microcracking. In the presence of micron size CTBN particles, which cavitate and induce massive shear yielding in the matrix, however, the recycled particles “stretch” the plastic deformation to distances far from the crack tip. This mechanism causes plastic zone branching and provides an unexpectedly high fracture toughness value. This study, therefore, provides a practical approach for manufacturing engineering polymer blends utilizing the surface modified recycled rubber particles.  相似文献

A single chip, multi-channel surface plasmon resonance (SPR) imaging system has been developed. The equipment has no moving parts and uses a single sensor chip on which multiple channels can be incorporated. A light emitting diode is used as a photon source while a CCD camera forms the detector. The optical configuration has been designed to achieve a uniform illumination of the sample over a fixed area with a range of incident angles. A calibration test using sucrose solutions shows that the sensitivity of the equipment is 4.3×10−4 refractive index units per pixel line-pair. The use of the system for simultaneous interrogation of different polyelectrolyte thin films, formed by the electrostatic layer-by-layer deposition method, is demonstrated. A reversible pH-dependent response for these organic layers is also reported.  相似文献

Most work on adaptive agents have a simple, single layerarchitecture. However, most agent architectures support three levels ofknowledge and control: a reflex level for reactive responses, a deliberatelevel for goal-driven behavior, and a reflective layer for deliberateplanning and problem decomposition. In this paper we explore agentsimplemented in Soar that behave and learn at the deliberate and reflectivelevels. These levels enhance not only behavior, but also adaptation. Theagents use a combination of analytic and empirical learning, drawing from avariety of sources of knowledge to adapt to their environment. We hypothesize that complete, adaptive agents must be able to learn across all three levels.  相似文献

An important question in array design is that of where to place the elements of a sparse array for optimal performance in terms of its ability to detect and resolve a greater number of sources than conventionally possible. In particular, it has been shown that when sensor elements are arranged in the minimum redundancy fashion, by performing an augmentation technique on the covariances obtained from the array outputs, an M element array can be made to estimate the directions of arrival of as many as M(M-1)/2 uncorrelated sources unambiguously. Constructive procedures are developed to evaluate integer locations for an array of given sensors that span a prescribed distance, such that any missing integer is expressible as the difference of two sensor locations. New upper bounds for the ratio of the square of the minimum number of elements to the spanning distance are also established  相似文献
