Voiced speech excitation synthesis using a sinusoidal model

A modification to the `shape-invariant' sinusoidal speech model is proposed, whereby the phases of the component sinewaves used for the excitation are made to add coherently at each glottal closure. Applied to pitch and time-scale modification, higher quality synthetic speech is produced when large changes are required     

Microwave Parametric Frequency Dividers With Conversion Gain

A novel active parametric frequency divider configuration using coupled microstrip transmission lines and two balanced pseudomorphic HEMTs (pHEMTs) is presented. The analysis of the divide-by-2 circuit presented applies the principles of subharmonic generation using a nonlinear reactance to an active semiconductor device such as a pHEMT. A 2-1-GHz active analog frequency divider is designed and fabricated, with measurements showing a 20% bandwidth, 13.5-dB conversion gain, and harmonic rejection levels of more than 22 dBc. A maximum conversion gain of 18 dB is also achieved. These higher conversion efficiencies and the ability to cascade dividers allow for higher order division ratios to be achieved with the same topology.     

On the measurement of SSB noise figure using sideband cancellation

A new method for determining the single-sideband noise figure of a device from double-sideband measurements is proposed which eliminates the need for tunable filters and hence greatly reduces the complexity and cost of performing accurate noise figure measurements. This paper compares results obtained to those obtained using a traditional single-sideband measurement system with a tuneable filter and provides a full error analysis of the new technique. The method also offers considerable possibilities for future use at higher (microwave) frequencies where YIG filters and image reject mixers are not readily available     

A new batch solvent-extraction pilot plant

Summary and Conclusions A new improved batch solvent extraction plant and its versatility of design have been described. Data have been given on the cost and initial test operations. The performance of the plant has been tested, and its value as a research tool has been demonstrated by the production of free gossypol and meals low in gossypol for use in research. Simplicity of operation is borne out by the fact that only one operator is needed. A limited number of detail drawings of the plant are available on written request from the Southern Regional Research Laboratory. Justifications,Strategies, and Critical Success Factors in Successful ITIL Implementations in U.S. and Australian Companies: An Exploratory Study

Abstract

A growing number of organizations are implementing the ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) “best practice” framework in an attempt to improve their IT service management processes. However, not all ITIL implementations are successful and some companies have been disappointed with the outcomes. This exploratory research reports on four case studies of “successful” implementations of IT service management using the process-based ITIL V2 framework. Two companies are located in the U.S. and two in Australia. The cases demonstrate a mix of implementation justifications and strategies. Critical success factors (CSFs) suggested in the literature are compared against those attributed to these successful ITIL implementations. Some CSFs, including executive management support, interdepartmental communication and collaboration, use of consultants, training and careful software selection are confirmed. Three new CSFs are identified: creating an ITIL-friendly culture, process as a priority, and customer-focused metrics. Practitioner guidelines, to assist IT managers, who are contemplating adopting ITIL for process improvement and organisational transformation, are also provided together with some challenges encountered and their associated resolutions.     

The dental status of asthmatic British school children

Pancreatic cancer is a dismal disease. The 5-year overall survival ranges from 1% to 5%. Surgery is the only curative treatment available for this cancer, but it is indicated only in selected patients with a less than 4 cm tumor. In these patients, survival rate is about 30%. We have considered several aspects: the very difficult early diagnosis, the correct diagnostic flow chart, actual surgical procedures and new trends in biologic and genetic research. It is likely that better results can be achieved by defining an "early pancreatic cancer" and establishing how to detect it. This could be the wrigth one way is to significantly improve the survival of these patients.     

Electromyography of the thigh muscles during lifting tasks in kneeling and squatting postures

Underground coal miners who work in low-seam mines frequently handle materials in kneeling or squatting postures. To assess quadriceps and hamstring muscle demands in these postures, nine participants performed lateral load transfers in kneeling and squatting postures, during which electromyographic (EMG) data were collected. EMG activity was obtained at five points throughout the transfer for three quadriceps muscles and two hamstring muscles from each thigh. ANOVA results indicated that EMG data for nine of 10 thigh muscles were affected by an interaction between posture and angular position of the load lifted (p < 0.001). Muscles of the right thigh were most active during the lifting portion of the task (lifting a block from the participant's right) and activity decreased as the block was transferred to the left. Left thigh muscles showed the opposite pattern. EMG activity for the majority of thigh muscles was affected by the size of the base of support provided by different postures, with lower EMG activity observed with a larger base of support and increased activity in postures where base of support was reduced (p < 0.05). Thigh EMG activity was lowest in postures with fully flexed knees, which may explain worker preference for this posture. However, such postures are also associated with increased risk of meniscal damage. STATEMENT OF RELEVANCE: Kneeling and squatting postures are sometimes used for manual lifting activities, but are associated with increased knee injury risk. This paper examines the EMG responses of knee extensors/flexors to lifting in these postures, discusses the impact of posture and kneepads on muscle recruitment and explores the implications for work in such postures.     

The effect of feedback on keying performance

The introduction of new telephone signalling systems and new technologies for telephone keypads has stimulated interest in the effect of providing electronic feedback on keying performance. An experiment using a conventional keypad is reported which shows that electronic auditory feedback had no significant effect on keying speed, accuracy or subject's opinion. A further series of experiments investigating the best type of feedback to improve performance with ‘touch’ keypads is then described. It was found that an electronic tone presented through the telephone earpiece was the best feedback.

Finally, performance with two types of touch keyphones incorporating the optimum form of feedback was compared with performance using a conventional keyphone. It was found that accuracy was significantly greater with the conventional keyphone, although performance with the touch keypads could be improved by electronically removing some of the very short spurious signalling times produced by them.     

High-resolution optical imaging of magnetic-domain structures

High-resolution optical techniques for imaging magnetic domains in ferromagnetic materials such as confocal microscopy and scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) are reviewed. The imaging capabilities of different techniques and image formation are discussed in the case of in-plane as well as out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy in different illumination configurations. It is shown that the magnetooptical resolution of near-field measurements depends on the film thickness and is limited by the diffraction on magnetic domains throughout the film. For thin magnetic films, subwavelength resolution can be attained. In addition to well-known near-field magnetooptical effects (out-of plane magnetization sensitivity of linear near-field microscopy and in-plane magnetization sensitivity of nonlinear near-field measurements), linear SNOM imaging of in-plane magnetization in thin magnetic films as well as nonlinear imaging of out-of-plane domains has been demonstrated. Thus, linear and second-harmonic near-field imaging of both in-plane and out-of-plane oriented magnetic domains can be achieved in transparent and opaque specimens. This enables applications of SNOM for studies of all kinds of magnetic materials. High-resolution optical imaging is required for characterization of the micro-magnetic and magnetooptical properties of novel magnetic structures in order to adopt a bottom-up approach in the search for new materials with improved characteristics.
