We propose using photochromic visualization to measure the hydrodynamic characteristics of artificial heart valves under simulated
physiological flow conditions. The photochromic visualization method is based on generation of colored markers in the flow
behind the artificial heart valve in a time equal to 10−6 to 10−9 sec. We use high-power laser radiation as the source for generating the colored markers.

The paper examines the structure, phase composition, and mechanical properties of ZrB2-based plasma coatings formed on D16T aluminum alloy under different conditions. It is established that coatings with an electrospark
sublayer are characterized by stronger adhesion with the substrate as compared with that deposited on the base after conventional
sandblasting. The wear resistance of this coating in dry friction is comparable with the monolithic VK15 hard alloy. Laser
treatment of the coating in open air decreases the wear by 25% at low sliding rates and simultaneously decreases the hardness
by 50%.

Results are reported from factory testing of different models of equipment that make it possible to limit the oxidation of
steel as it is being cast on the tundish-mold section of continuous casters. A study is made of the effect of the chosen method
of protection on point segregation at the edges of the continuous-cast semifinished product and the formation of gas bubbles
inside it.

The electromagnetic mixing (EMM) of liquid steel on continuous casters has become an integral part of the process of making
high-quality metal for rolling. The molds of continuous section casters usually use one-and two-coil EMM units located inside
or outside the mold. In October 2004, an EMM unit made by ABB Automation Systems was installed on continuous caster No. 1
in the open-hearth shop at the Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Combine. The unit has a short coil located on the outside of the
body of the mold. The use of EMM on caster No. 1 has made it possible to improve the macrostructure of the sections cast on
this machine. Comparative data are presented on the quality of the macrostructure of continuous-cast semifinished products
obtained with and without the use of EMM.
