The influence of Na2O on the structure and properties of 3CaO.Al2O3

Four crystal forms of solid solutions of Na₂O in 3CaO.Al₂O₃ have been synthesized. Chemical, crystal-optical, X-ray diffraction and IR-spectroscopic investigations have been made.The hydration activity at the early and later stages has been studied. It is shown that the hydration process can be divided into three stages. The analysis of the kinetic curves permitted the conclusion that the retardation of the hydration process is controlled by diffusion of the liquid phase through the product layer.     

Comparative analysis of correlations for calculating subcooled boiling heat transfer

Results of calculations of the tube wall temperature under flow boiling of water subcooled relative to the saturation temperature are presented. These calculations are performed using different calculation techniques. The comparison and the analysis of the calculation techniques were conducted with the use of experimental data obtained by several authors.     

Cross section for the formation of gamma-quanta during the interaction of fast neutrons with carbon,lead, and rhenium nuclei

Conclusions The values obtained for the cross sections for formation of -lines (E=4.44 MeV) in carbon agree with the data obtained by other researchers, within experimental error.The results of measurements for lead agree qualitatively with our understanding of the deexcitation of levels in the reaction (n, n) for E_n<4 MeV.The energy distribution of -quanta for rhenium decreases smoothly with increasing E. Effect of heterochronic parabiosis on liver microsomal enzyme oxidation

Third molars have been associated with a host of pathologies and there are risks involved with their surgical removal. They also have the highest incidence of congenital absence of all the permanent teeth. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and distribution of congenitally missing third molars in local Chinese patients. The orthopantomographic radiographs of 786 Singaporean Chinese patients aged 12 to 16 years were examined. It was found that 562 (71.5%) of the children had all 4 third molars. Varying degrees of third molar agenesis were noted in the other 224 (28.5%) children. Of these, 43 (5.5%) showed total absence of third molars. There was no significant difference in agenesis between the right and left sides and no sexual predilection was noted. However, more third molars were missing from the maxilla compared to the mandible, the ratio being 3:2.     

Relationship between Neuroglial Apoptosis and Neuroinflammation in the Epileptic Focus of the Brain and in the Blood of Patients with Drug-Resistant Epilepsy

Neuroglial apoptosis and neuroinflammation play an important role in epileptogenesis. The aim of this study is to evaluate neuronal and glial apoptosis in association with neuroinflammation in brain epileptic focus and inflammatory changes in blood in patients with focal drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). Pathological changes in the temporal lobe in epilepsy (histology, transmission electron microscopy), levels of apoptotic and neuroinflammatory proteins: active caspase-3 (immunohistochemistry), full-length form caspase-3, caspase-9, FAS, FAS-L, NF-kB, TNF-α, p53 (Western blot), and cytokine levels in blood: IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-7, TNF-α, etc. (multiplex analysis) were studied. In the present work, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical apoptotic signs were found in neurons and oligodendrocytes in the temporal lobe of DRE patients. Levels of proinflammatory cytokines that play a role in apoptosis (TNF-α, FAS, NF-kB) were increased. The blood concentration of IL-4, IL-7, TNF-α is increased and IL-2 is reduced. Oligodendroglial apoptosis has been shown to play an important role in DRE pathogenesis and to explain demyelination. Thus, a comprehensive analysis of revealed changes in the blood and brain in DRE patients showed the neuroinflammation in the epileptic focus, which was combined with the development of apoptosis of glial cells and neurons. This creates conditions for the development of drug resistance and the epilepsy progression.     

Investigation of the Physicochemical Properties of Borosilicate Glasses for the Preparation of Glass-Fiber Materials

Borosilicate glasses of two compositions are synthesized and investigated with the aim of preparing glass microspheres from them. Using the Appen and Okhotin additive methods, the physicochemical properties of the glasses and melts are calculated, their crystallization ability and water stability are experimentally studied, their intrinsic temperatures are determined using dilatometry and differential scanning calorimetry, and their TLCE values are obtained.     

Computer-Aided Analysis of Transformation Formulas for Appel and Horn Functions

Simultaneous use of general and special linear transformations allows 36 transformations for the Appel function F ₄ to be obtained. This result is important because F ₄ is widely used in physics and mathematics. The transformations express F ₄ in terms of the Appel functions F ₁, F ₂, and F ₃; the Horn function H ₂; and non-Hornian series G, K, and . Until now, it was not possible to obtain linear multiplets having such a large dimensionality. A program based on Maple V4 was developed for formula generation. Details of program operation and possible applications of the results obtained are discussed.     

Influence of an anti-atherosclerotic diet containing a protein enricher on the clinico-biochemical indices of patients with ischemic heart disease]

Observations covered two groups of patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD). The first, control group (50 patients) received a course of treatment with antiatherosclerotic diet, while the second (50) was kept on a curative diet that included a protein enrichment agent. It was found that the patients of the lastly named group demonstrated, along with an improved general condition and diminution of basic clinical manifestation of IHD, a more noticeable fall of all the lipid fractions and also a more distinct and significant reduction of an elevated permeability of the capillaries to protein. The results obtained justify recommending inclusion of the protein enrichment agent in the diet of patients with IHD, to increase the biological value of the ration and the effect of the ongoing dietotherapy.
