In emulsions consisting of refined lard, egg white and corn starch haemoglobin, initially a mixture of the oxy and met forms, at levels similar to the haemoprotein contents found in fresh meat, was a far more powerful catalyst of lipid oxidation, as measured by TBA number, than inorganic iron compounds at levels appropriate to those found in meat. This was true over the pH range 4·5 to 7·5. When added and evenly distributed to exhaustively washed muscle fibres (WF), at levels appropriate to those found in meat, haemoglobin was again a powerful catalyst, but all forms of inorganic iron appeared to have little prooxidant activity. The rate of oxidation of the lipid was very dependent on the haemoprotein concentration, being maximal in the range 10(-4) to 10(-5) M. This equates to an approximate unsaturated lipid to haem molar ratio of several hundred to one, similar to the values reported for model linoleate haem systems. In heated systems the haemoprotein again appeared to be a more effective catalyst than inorganic iron at levels appropriate to those found in meat. It is concluded that the conflicting results as to the roles of haem pigments and inorganic iron in lipid oxidation found in the literature are due, at least in part, to the difficulty of evenly dispersing the catalysts in the washed fibres, especially if heat or freezing leads to subsequent phase separation, and that H(2)O(2), formed by autoxidation of the oxypigments, may be necessary for ferric haem pigments to be effective catalysts. 相似文献
In this paper, postural sway is modeled using a fractional autoregressive integrated moving average (FARIMA) family of models: the center-of-pressure (COP) motion is viewed in terms of a self-similar, anti-persistent random-walk process, obtained by fractionally summating non-Gaussian random variables, whose correlation structure for small time lags is shaped by a linear time-invariant low-pass filter. The model parameters are: the strength of the stochastic driving, e.g., the root mean square (rms) value of the time-difference COP motion; the DC gain, damping ratio and natural frequency of the filter; the Hurst exponent, which measures the random-walk antipersistence magnitude. In the proposed modeling procedure, a graphical estimator for determining the Hurst exponent is cascaded to a method for matching autoregressive (AR) models to fractionally difference COP motion via higher order cumulants. The effect of the presence or absence of vision on the model parameter values is discussed with regard to data from experiments on healthy young adults. 相似文献
We conducted a study to determine the effects of excess dietary crude protein (CP) and rumen undegradable protein (RUP) on reproduction and lactation performance of Holstein cows. During each of three yearly replicates, cows were blocked by previous mature equivalent milk production and randomly assigned at calving (n = 47; partum group) or at 42 +/- 21 d postpartum (n = 134; postpartum group) to the following dietary treatments: 1) ryegrass pasture supplemented with a corn and soybean meal grain mix (high CP, moderate RUP); 2) ryegrass pasture mornings and corn silage evenings, supplemented with grain as in diet 1 (moderate CP, moderate RUP control diet), and 3) ryegrass pasture mornings and corn silage evenings, supplemented with a grain mix containing corn, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, and blood meal (moderate CP, high RUP). Dietary CP and RUP concentrations were approximately 23.1, 5.8; 17.7, 5.0; and 17.2, 6.8% of dry matter for diets 1 to 3, respectively. Plasma urea N concentrations were highest in cows fed diet 1 (25.0 mg/dl), intermediate in cows on diet 2 (20.1 mg/dl), and lowest in cows on diet 3 (18.5 mg/dl). Cows fed excess dietary protein (diet 1) exhibited lower first breeding pregnancy rates (24.1 vs. 41.0%) and lower overall pregnancy rates (53.4 vs. 75.4%) than did cows fed diet 2, increasing time nonpregnant by an average of 15.1 d per cow. Reproductive performance was similar between cows fed diets 2 and 3. Mean fat-corrected milk (FCM) yield was not affected by protein concentration (diet 1 vs. 2); however, partum group cows that received supplemental RUP (diet 3) produced more 3.5% FCM than controls in early lactation. Alkyl glycosides are interesting intermediates for the production of biodegradable surfactants. Synthesis of ethyl beta-d-fructofuranoside by invertase-catalysed ethanolysis of sucrose has been extensively reported in literature. However, this procedure yields mixtures of glucose, fructose, sucrose and ethyl beta-d-fructofuranoside. Purification of ethyl beta-d-fructofuranoside from such mixtures by chromatographic methods is laborious, difficult to scale up and requires organic solvents. The yeast Hansenula polymorpha grows rapidly on glucose, fructose and sucrose. Sucrose hydrolysis in this yeast is catalysed by an intracellular alpha-glucosidase ('maltase'); consequently, H. polymorpha should be unable to hydrolyse ethyl beta-d-fructofuranoside. Indeed, aerobic cultivation of H. polymorpha on sugar mixtures obtained by invertase-catalysed ethanolysis of sucrose resulted in the complete removal of contaminating sugars, leaving ethyl beta-d-fructofuranoside as the sole organic compound in culture supernatants. Pure ethyl beta-d-fructofuranoside was recovered from the supernatants by mixed-bed ion exchange chromatography with an 86% yield. 相似文献
Over-expression of the yeast PEP4 gene encoding the vacuolar aspartic protease proteinase A (PrA) leads to saturation of the vacuolar targeting system of the cell and missorting of PrA to the growth medium. In a screen for genes affecting the secretion of over-expressed PrA we found that multiple copies of the open reading frame (ORF) YAL048c enhanced PrA secretion. Since no function has hitherto been ascribed to YAL048c, we undertook further studies of this ORF. Deletion of YAL048c resulted in slightly reduced secretion of over-produced PrA. Furthermore, strains deleted for YAL048c showed a growth inhibition phenotype resulting in wrinkled colony morphology when grown on rich medium containing high concentrations of calcium. YAL048c is predicted to encode a polypeptide of 662 amino acid residues containing two consensus ATP/GTP-binding site motifs and a putative carboxy-terminal transmembrane region. In addition, the amino acid sequence contains two putative calcium-binding domains. The YAL048c protein may be evolutionarily conserved, as homologues exist in humans and Caenorhabditis elegans. We present a general wavelet-based denoising scheme for functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data and compare it to Gaussian smoothing, the traditional denoising method used in fMRI analysis. One-dimensional WaveLab thresholding routines were adapted to two-dimensional (2-D) images, and applied to 2-D wavelet coefficients. To test the effect of these methods on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), we compared the SNR of 2-D fMRI images before and after denoising, using both Gaussian smoothing and wavelet-based methods. We simulated a fMRI series with a time signal in an active spot, and tested the methods on noisy copies of it. The denoising methods were evaluated in two ways: by the average temporal SNR inside the original activated spot, and by the shape of the spot detected by thresholding the temporal SNR maps. Denoising methods that introduce much smoothness are better suited for low SNRs, but for images of reasonable quality they are not preferable, because they introduce heavy deformations. Wavelet-based denoising methods that introduce less smoothing preserve the sharpness of the images and retain the original shapes of active regions. We also performed statistical parametric mapping on the denoised simulated time series, as well as on a real fMRI data set. False discovery rate control was used to correct for multiple comparisons. The results show that the methods that produce smooth images introduce more false positives. The less smoothing wavelet-based methods, although generating more false negatives, produce a smaller total number of errors than Gaussian smoothing or wavelet-based methods with a large smoothing effect. 相似文献
The discrete Fourier transform (DFT) underpins the solution to many inverse problems commonly possessing missing or unmeasured frequency information. This incomplete coverage of the Fourier space always produces systematic artifacts called Ghosts. In this paper, a fast and exact method for deconvolving cyclic artifacts caused by missing slices of the DFT using redundant image regions is presented. The slices discussed here originate from the exact partitioning of the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) space, under the projective Discrete Radon Transform, called the discrete Fourier slice theorem. The method has a computational complexity of O(nlog(2)n) (for an n=N×N image) and is constructed from a new cyclic theory of Ghosts. This theory is also shown to unify several aspects of work done on Ghosts over the past three decades. This paper concludes with an application to fast, exact, non-iterative image reconstruction from a highly asymmetric set of rational angle projections that give rise to sets of sparse slices within the DFT. 相似文献
We show that a mobile phone can serve as an accurate monitor for several physiological variables, based on its ability to record and analyze the varying color signals of a fingertip placed in contact with its optical sensor. We confirm the accuracy of measurements of breathing rate, cardiac R-R intervals, and blood oxygen saturation, by comparisons to standard methods for making such measurements (respiration belts, ECGs, and pulse-oximeters, respectively). Measurement of respiratory rate uses a previously reported algorithm developed for use with a pulse-oximeter, based on amplitude and frequency modulation sequences within the light signal. We note that this technology can also be used with recently developed algorithms for detection of atrial fibrillation or blood loss. 相似文献
The three halothane genotypes (NN, Nn, and nm) were identified by measuring the capacity for Ca2+ accumulation by sarcoplasmic reticulum in whole muscle homogenate preparations of M. longissimus dorsi with a Ca2+ specific electrode at 35°C. Significant differences (P < 0·001) in deterioration (%) of Ca2+ accumulation, 12% for NN, 35% for Nn, and 81% for nn pigs, were observed after ageing the whole muscle homogenate preparations for 24 h in ice.
Predictions of meat quality in live pigs (n = 34) based on the values for water-holding capacity, assessed as fluid (g/0·5 g wet wt LD), and pH (fluid) by using small biopsy LD samples (Cheah et al. 1993) were performed on all the halothane genotypes. The halothane genotype NN (n = 11) showed a fluid value of 0·37 ± 0·01 and a pH (fluid) value of 6·62 ± 0·03 as compared with 0·61 ± 0·02 and 5·84 ± 0·04, respectively, for the halothane genotype nn (n = 13). The Nn pigs (n = 10) showed fluid (0·49 ± 0·03) and pH (fluid) (6·19 ± 0·11) values between those values observed for the two homozygotes (NN and nn). Predictions of meat quality in live pigs from biopsy LD muscles were confirmed from assessments on post-mortem LD muscles based on pH1 and fibre optic probe (FOP) measurements.
The extent of deterioration (%) in Ca2+ accumulation showed high correlations with fluid (r = −0·861) and pH (fluid) (r = −0·831) in the biopsy LD samples, and with pH1 (r = 0·663), FOP (r = −0·812), and drip (%) loss (r = −0·777) in the post-mortem LD samples. 相似文献
