Evaluation of the performance of metameric indices

Forty three metameric pairs were obtained by comparison, shade-adjustment, and redyeing of 660 self shades dyed with direct, azoic, vat, and reactive dyes. The pairs were regrouped shadewise and ranked visually in increasing order of metamerism. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were calculated between 11 measures of metamerism and the visual metameric ranking under three illuminants A, D65, and TL84 in pairs. The illuminant-independent general indices included the indices based on reflectance differences (Bridgeman), weighted reflectance differences (Nimeroff and Yurow), Cohen-Kappauf's residual differences (proposed) obtained from the spectral decompositions of the reflectance spectra of the metameric pair. Illuminant-specific special indices included color-differences under test illuminant, addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication of color-differences under test and reference illuminants, indices based on ΔL*, Δa*, Δb* differences under two illuminants, based on chromatic adapted ΔL*, Δa*, Δb* differences with multiplicative corrections for tristimulus differences under reference illuminant (Berns-Billmeyer), differences of the color constancy indices. The present work showed that indices based on ΔL*, Δa*, Δb* differences under two illuminants, both unmodified and modified by Berns-Billmeyer performed best among the existing indices. The differences of color constancy indices showed good correlation with the degree of metamerism in some cases, and this may be utilized for developing newer indices of metamerism. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Profile of Triacylglycerols,Phenols, and Vitamin E of Manjari Medika Grape Seed Oil and Cake: Introducing a Novel Indian Variety

The aim of the study is to investigate the biochemical composition of grapeseed oil and cake from an unexplored Indian grape‐juice cultivar, Manjari Medika (MM). The composition of oil and residual seed cake is evaluated using various chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. The findings demonstrate that the vitamin E content of MM‐seed oil (1.15–1.35 g kg^?1) is distinctively higher than the Codex standard, suggesting its superior quality as an edible oil. The predominant triacylglycerols include trilinolein (LLL, 43%), dilinoleoyl‐stearylglycerol (LSL, 19%), and dilinoleoyl‐palmitoylglycerol (LLP, 11%), which are earlier recognized as natural antioxidants. The seed‐cake is rich in polyphenols including acylated anthocyanins (e.g., pelargonidin‐3‐O‐coumaroyl glucoside) and certain other flavonoids (e.g., catechin). The profile of phytonutrients in MM seed‐oil and cake is significantly superior to its seeded female parent and two other widely cultivated wine‐grape varieties. In brief, the studied by‐products of this new grape‐juice cultivar can be an important source of high‐value ingredients for use in food supplements, nutraceuticals, and functional foods. Practical applications: This study reports the phytochemical profile of the seed‐oil and seed cake derived from a newly developed grape variety, Manjari Medika. High contents of selective antioxidants: lipids, vitamin E, and phenols in the seed‐oil and cake with health benefits suggest their potential for use in nutraceutical and functional foods. These byproducts can be utilised as ingredients of functional foods and nutraceuticals (e.g., grape seed oil capsule) and also as raw materials in food supply chains (e.g., for production of grape cookies or cake). MM can also be utilized as a colorant in the food industry.     

Effect of steam environment on severe core damage behaviour for VVER-1000 with the ASTEC V1 code

Severe accident studies for very low frequency events for VVER-1000 (V320) are carried out to estimate in-vessel damage progression under steam-rich and starved conditions. The analyses with code ASTEC, jointly developed by IRSN (France) and GRS, Germany), have shown the influence of steam environment on core heat-up followed by material relocation, hydrogen production, vessel failure and aerosol generation along with release to containment. Hydro-accumulator injection for studied transients also gives rise to a steam-rich environment enhancing the material oxidation depending on the injection time and period. The generated information along with PSA-Level 2 is helpful to decide Plant Damage State (PDS) and fruitfully develop accident management strategies for the plant.     

Relationship between pacemaker fibrillation thresholds and electrode area.

Energy thresholds for electrical pacing of the heart are lower with small electrodes than with large. Because pacing of the heart during the vulnerable period may produce ventricular fibrillation, it is also pertinent to know if fibrillation threshold is affected by the electrode size. Electrodes of different surface area but of the same material were implanted in 40 dogs and the pacing thresholds were recorded. Ventricular fibrillation was electrically induced by discharging a 2-msec d.c. cathodal pulse of progressively increasing energy into the vulnerable period. It was found that small electrodes required more energy to produce ventricular fibrillation than large electrodes, and the ratio of fibrillation to stimulation threshold was higher for the small-surface-area electrode. The difference between the thresholds and ratios obtained with the various electrodes was statistically significant. A similar experiment was performed in animals with chronically implanted electrodes, producing comparable results. The results indicate that, in regard to pacing and fibrillation thresholds, small electrodes are preferable to large.     

An inhomogeneous thermal block model of man for the electromagnetic environment

An inhomogeneous thermal block model of man with 476 cubical cells has been developed. It incorporates inhomogeneous blood flow rates, metabolic heat production, specific heats, and thermal conductivities, obtained by volume-weighted averaging of the values for eleven different tissue types which constitute the human body. The transient heat conduction equation for the thermal model includes the effects of internal metabolic heat generation, electromagnetic energy deposition, heat conduction through the tissues, convective heat transfer by blood, evaporative heat dissipation by sweating and insensible perspiration, respiratory heat loss, and heat transfer to the environment by radiation and convection. The standard implicit finite difference technique has been utilized to solve the three-dimensional heat conduction equation.

Clustering-Based Denoising With Locally Learned Dictionaries

In this paper, we propose K-LLD: a patch-based, locally adaptive denoising method based on clustering the given noisy image into regions of similar geometric structure. In order to effectively perform such clustering, we employ as features the local weight functions derived from our earlier work on steering kernel regression . These weights are exceedingly informative and robust in conveying reliable local structural information about the image even in the presence of significant amounts of noise. Next, we model each region (or cluster)-which may not be spatially contiguous-by ldquolearningrdquo a best basis describing the patches within that cluster using principal components analysis. This learned basis (or ldquodictionaryrdquo) is then employed to optimally estimate the underlying pixel values using a kernel regression framework. An iterated version of the proposed algorithm is also presented which leads to further performance enhancements. We also introduce a novel mechanism for optimally choosing the local patch size for each cluster using Stein's unbiased risk estimator (SURE). We illustrate the overall algorithm's capabilities with several examples. These indicate that the proposed method appears to be competitive with some of the most recently published state of the art denoising methods.     

Characterization of Cu-SiO2 Composite Synthesized by Hydrogen Reduction of Chalcopyrite Concentrate Followed by Acid Leaching

A Ghatshila chalcopyrite concentrate (average particle size, 50 μm) containing primarily CuFeS₂ and SiO₂ (Cu 16 pct, Fe 26 pct, S 14 pct, Si 5 pct, and O 33 pct) was reduced by a stream of hydrogen in a horizontal tube furnace at 1323 K (1050 °C), producing a mixture of Cu (26 pct), SiO₂, Fe₂O₃, Fe₃O₄, Cu₂O, and Fe. Subsequent acid leaching with 1 M HCl solution of the reduction product removed all iron oxides and iron, and other impurities too, leaving a Cu (53.3 pct) + SiO₂ mixture, with a small percentage of Cu₂O in it. This result compares well with the predicted final mixture of Cu (59 pct)-SiO₂ based on a mass balance on the starting concentrate. Elemental chemical analyses were done by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, which were crosschecked by atomic absorption spectroscopy in the majority of cases. The phase identification and microstructural characterization of Cu-SiO₂ mixtures were done by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Rietveld analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). It was found that Cu-SiO₂ composites were formed in the final product, with a copper grain size of 385 nm.
