Electroencephalograms (EEGs) were recorded before and after ‘head-only’ electrical stunning of adult cattle. Epochs of 8·5 s duration derived from the pre-and the post-stun EEG signals were compared for differences in scale and frequency.
The frequency structures of two selected epochs from the one animal were evaluated using the periodogram ordinates derived by calculating the Fast Fourier Transform. The comparison of the two pre-stun epochs indicated that, within the one animal, the pre-stun EEG signal had a consistent frequency pattern. Similarly, a comparison of two post-stun epochs indicated that the post-stun EEG signal also had a consistent frequency pattern. The comparison of pre- and post-stun epochs indicated a consistent increases in amplitude after stunning. Additionally, after stunning, there was an increase in the power of frequencies in the range 4–8 Hz and a decrease in the power of certain frequencies in the range 15–25 Hz. Although there was considerable animal-to-animal variation it was demonstrated that electric stunning produced definable changes in the EEG signal. 相似文献
Euglena gracilis is a photosynthetic flagellate. To acquire a suitable position in its surrounding aquatic environment, it exploits light and gravity primarily as environmental cues. Several physiological studies have indicated a fine-tuned relationship between gravity sensing (gravitaxis) and light sensing in E. gracilis. However, the underlying molecular mechanism is largely unknown. The photoreceptor photoactivated adenylyl cyclase (PAC) has been studied for over a decade. Nevertheless, no direct/indirect interaction partner (upstream/downstream) has been reported for PAC. It has been shown that a specific protein, kinase A (PKA), showed to be involved in phototaxis and gravitaxis. The bioaccumulation of free and glycosylated forms of stigmasterol and β-sitosterol were determined from Cycas micronesica K.D. Hill seeds throughout seed ontogeny. Per-seed pool of the four compounds increased linearly from 2 to 24 months, indicating no developmental period elicited a major shift in the rate of bioaccumulation. The slopes were not homogeneous, signifying a change in relative sterol profile concomitant with seed maturation. This shift was in favour of the glucosides, as their rate of accumulation exceeded that of the free sterols. Stigmasterol content exceeded that of β-sitosterol, but ontogeny did not influence the ratio of these dominant sterols. The quantity and quality of sterol exposure during consumption of foods prepared from gametophytes by humans is strongly influenced by age of harvested seeds. Results are critical for a further understanding of the link between human neurodegenerative diseases and historical consumption of foods derived from the seed gametophyte tissue. 相似文献
A new software package, Virtual Column 2, is described for the simulation and optimization of the separation of inorganic anions by ion chromatography (IC). The software uses a limited amount of experimental retention data acquired according to a correct experimental design to predict retention times for analytes over a designated search area of eluent compositions. The experimental retention data are used to solve a new retention model, called the linear solvent strength model, empirical approach (LSSM-EA), which then enables prediction of retention times for all eluent compositions in the search area. The theoretical development of LSSM-EA and the processes used for solving the equations are discussed. Virtual Column 2 can be used for eluents containing one or two competing ions, and the software contains retention databases for up to 33 analytes on the Dionex AS9A-HC, AS4A-SC, and AS14A analytical columns with carbonate-bicarbonate eluents and the Dionex AS10, AS15, and AS16 analytical columns with hydroxide eluents (results for the AS10 and AS15 columns are not discussed in the present study). Virtual Column 2 has been evaluated extensively and is shown to give predicted retention times that in most cases agree with experimentally determined data to within 5%. The software has uses in practical IC method development, education and training in IC, and refinement of existing IC methodology. The Capability Maturity Model for software has become a major force in software development process improvement. We looked at the role of process improvement in the context of a small organization. Although the Capability Maturity Model integration is replacing the CMM, we focused on the older CMM. We had to look at more than which CMM key process areas apply to small businesses. Our overall goal was to institute good software development practices, we used the language of the CMM to gain the management's cooperation. Applying these practices is essential to managing growth, yet undertaking this effort without prior experience could impede a small company's innovative nature. This paper describes a method for creating a well-shaped, layered tetrahedral mesh of a thin-walled solid by adapting the surface triangle sizes to the estimated wall thickness. The primary target application of the method is the finite element analysis of plastic injection molding, in which a layered mesh improves the accuracy of the solution. The edge lengths of the surface triangles must be proportional to the thickness of the domain to create well-shaped tetrahedrons; when the edge lengths are too short or too long, the shape of the tetrahedron tends to become thin or flat. The proposed method creates such a layered tetrahedral mesh in three steps: (1) create a preliminary tetrahedral mesh of the target geometric domain and estimate thickness distribution over the domain; (2) create a non-uniform surface triangular mesh with edge length adapted to the estimated thickness, then create a single-layer tetrahedral mesh using the surface triangular mesh; and (3) subdivide tetrahedrons of the single-layer mesh into multiple layers by applying a subdivision template. The effectiveness of the layered tetrahedral mesh is verified by running some experimental finite element analyses of plastic injection molding. 相似文献
A hybrid power compensator (HPC) consisting of a static VAr compensator and a dynamic compensator needs to be optimally controlled during the compensation of nonlinear loads. The HPC must be controlled to meet minimum requirements in terms of power factor and harmonic distortion, while at the same time minimizing its total cost. The use of an artificial neural network (ANN) to control the HPC amid a very dynamic environment to achieve the above is investigated. A state-space model of the power distribution network together with the HPC forms the basis of evaluation of the mentioned controller. The model was calibrated against actual in-network measurements. The results obtained reveals that the application of an ANN in controlling an HPC is feasible given that the ANN parameters are chosen appropriately 相似文献
The new coupled pickle line and cold mill (CPCM) has been processing steel since December 1991 at Dofasco Inc. in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. This mill rolls both sheet and tin plate. The work rolls for the last stand are often textured by grit blasting to roll “matte” finished strip. A new computer-targeted control system was developed for the roll speeds and gaps, specifically for matte rolling. The new set-up system uses Stone's model, which is more appropriate for the limited reductions evident with the rougher rolls. Conventional automatic gauge control (AGC) systems using thickness measurements after the last stand are limited in performance by the effect of long transport delays. These limitations are particularly critical during mill acceleration and deceleration. The use of a thickness gauge before the stand with matte rolls allows the development of AGC systems using shorter control loops for final gauge control. The AGC system uses a Smith predictor for transport lag, (phase shift), and compensation. The combination of the shorter AGC loop and the Smith predictor allows higher gains to be used in the control system.
