This work demonstrates an optofluidic system, where dielectrophoretically controlled suspended nanoparticles are used to manipulate the properties of an optical waveguide. This optofluidic device is composed of a multimode polymeric rib waveguide and a microfluidic channel as its upper cladding. This channel integrates dielectrophoretic (DEP) microelectrodes and is infiltrated with suspended silica and tungsten trioxide nanoparticles. By applying electrical signals with various intensities and frequencies to the DEP microelectrodes, the nanoparticles can be concentrated close to the waveguide surface significantly altering the optical properties in this region. Depending on the particle refractive indices, concentrations, positions and dimensions, the light remains confined or is scattered into the surrounding media in the microfluidic channel.  相似文献

Land use and land cover (LULC) maps from remote sensing are vital for monitoring, understanding and predicting the effects of complex human-nature interactions that span local, regional and global scales. We present a method to map annual LULC at a regional spatial scale with source data and processing techniques that permit scaling to broader spatial and temporal scales, while maintaining a consistent classification scheme and accuracy. Using the Dry Chaco ecoregion in Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay as a test site, we derived a suite of predictor variables from 2001 to 2007 from the MODIS 250 m vegetation index product (MOD13Q1). These variables included: annual statistics of red, near infrared, and enhanced vegetation index (EVI), phenological metrics derived from EVI time series data, and slope and elevation. For reference data, we visually interpreted percent cover of eight classes at locations with high-resolution QuickBird imagery in Google Earth. An adjustable majority cover threshold was used to assign samples to a dominant class. When compared to field data, we found this imagery to have georeferencing error < 5% the length of a MODIS pixel, while most class interpretation error was related to confusion between agriculture and herbaceous vegetation. We used the Random Forests classifier to identify the best sets of predictor variables and percent cover thresholds for discriminating our LULC classes. The best variable set included all predictor variables and a cover threshold of 80%. This optimal Random Forests was used to map LULC for each year between 2001 and 2007, followed by a per-pixel, 3-year temporal filter to remove disallowed LULC transitions. Our sequence of maps had an overall accuracy of 79.3%, producer accuracy from 51.4% (plantation) to 95.8% (woody vegetation), and user accuracy from 58.9% (herbaceous vegetation) to 100.0% (water). We attributed map class confusion to limited spectral information, sub-pixel spectral mixing, georeferencing error and human error in interpreting reference samples. We used our maps to assess woody vegetation change in the Dry Chaco from 2002 to 2006, which was characterized by rapid deforestation related to soybean and planted pasture expansion. This method can be easily applied to other regions or continents to produce spatially and temporally consistent information on annual LULC.  相似文献

The University of Sussex In-School Teacher Education Project (InSTEP) uses interactive video technologies to enhance initial teacher education programmes for science trainee teachers. With four Internet Protocol cameras and mounted microphones in both school laboratories and the university teaching room, trainees and their tutors have access to live interaction with schools. This paper presents some of the findings of a 2 year evaluation of InSTEP aimed at identifying the benefits for trainee teachers. There has been an increase in the use of video material for teacher training purposes, however, trainee teachers are often intimidated by carefully selected extracts featuring experienced teachers. InSTEP activities are live and capitalise on all the opportunities associated with normal classroom practice. Literature points to InSTEP-type activities having the potential to enhance the development of trainees’ observation skills, develop reflective thinking, to provide authentic illustrations of classroom practice, enable remote observation and facilitate the coaching of trainees by mentors. A fourth generation model of evaluation was undertaken with data generated by semi-structured interviews with university tutors and mentors supported by a questionnaire and group interviews with the trainees. Our main findings point to InSTEP enhancing and accelerating the growth of trainee teachers’ professional knowledge through enabling reflective practice, facilitating collaborative learning and supporting the development of the language of pedagogy.  相似文献

Oxygen sensing films were synthesized by a chemical conjugation of functional platinum porphyrin probes in silica gel, polystyrene (PS), and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) matrices. Responses of the sensing films to gaseous oxygen and dissolved oxygen were studied and the influence of the matrices on the sensing behaviors was investigated. Silica gel films had the highest fluorescence intensity ratio from deoxygenated to oxygenated environments and the fastest response time to oxygen. PHEMA films had no response to gaseous oxygen, but had greater sensitivity and a faster response time for dissolved oxygen than those of PS films. The influence of matrices on oxygen response, sensitivity and response time was discussed. The influence is most likely attributed to the oxygen diffusion abilities of the matrices. Since the probes were chemically immobilized in the matrices, no leaching of the probes was observed from the sensing films when applied in aqueous environment. One sensing film made from the PHEMA matrix was used to preliminarily monitor the oxygen consumption of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria. E. coli cell density and antibiotics ampicillin concentration dependent oxygen consumption was observed, indicating the potential application of the oxygen sensing film for biological application.  相似文献

We present an analytical framework for the performance analysis of CSMA/CA based wireless mesh networks. This framework can provide an accurate throughput-delay evaluation for both saturated and unsaturated cases. An efficient algorithm that determines the collision domain for each node based on both the interference range and routing in the network is presented. As another important application of this framework, we develop an analytic model that enables us to obtain closed form expressions for delay in terms of multipath routing variables. A flow-deviation algorithm is used to derive the optimal flow over a given set of routes for any number of classes. The model takes into account the effects of neighbor interference and hidden terminals, and tools are provided to make it feasible for the performance analysis and optimization of large-scale networks. Numerical results are presented for different network topologies and compared with simulation studies.  相似文献

High-radix switches are desirable building blocks for large computer interconnection networks, because they are more suitable to convert chip I/O bandwidth into low latency and low cost than low-radix switches [J. Kim, W.J. Dally, B. Towles, A.K. Gupta, Microarchitecture of a high-radix router, in: Proc. ISCA 2005, Madison, WI, 2005]. Unfortunately, most existing switch architectures do not scale well to a large number of ports, for example, the complexity of the buffered crossbar architecture scales quadratically with the number of ports. Compounded with support for long round-trip times and many virtual channels, the overall buffer requirements limit the feasibility of such switches to modest port counts. Compromising on the buffer sizing leads to a drastic increase in latency and reduction in throughput, as long as traditional credit flow control is employed at the link level. We propose a novel link-level flow control protocol that enables high-performance scalable switches that are based on the increasingly popular buffered crossbar architecture, to scale to higher port counts without sacrificing performance. By combining credited and speculative transmission, this scheme achieves reliable delivery, low latency, and high throughput, even with crosspoint buffers that are significantly smaller than the round-trip time. The proposed scheme substantially reduces message latency and improves throughput of partially buffered crossbar switches loaded with synthetic uniform and non-uniform bursty traffic. Moreover, simulations replaying traces of several typical MPI applications demonstrate communication speedup factors of 2 to 10 times.  相似文献

Case-control association studies using unrelated cases and controls may suffer from potential confounding due to population stratification. Bias and variance distortion caused by population stratification in the commonly used allele-based tests can considerably inflate the Type I error rate. It is shown that the bias vanishes in the absence of disease rate heterogeneity. If only population stratification exists, a proper estimate of the variance of the allele-based test statistic is developed. Using this estimated variance yields a valid Type I error. However, when the frequencies of the allele under study and the disease rates differ among the subpopulations, it is difficult to correct for this bias. Explicit expressions for the excess false positive rate (EFPR) of the test due to bias and variance distortion are derived. It turns out that the bias created when both population stratification and disease rate heterogeneity are present usually has a greater effect on the EFPR than variance distortion. Comprehensive simulation studies strongly support these results.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a connectionist model for variable binding. The model is topology dependent on the graph it builds based on the predicates available. The irregular connections between perceptron-like assemblies facilitate forward and backward chaining. The model treats the symbolic data as a sequence and represents the training set as a partially connected network using basic set and graph theory to form the internal representation. Inference is achieved by opportunistic reasoning via the bidirectional connections. Consequently, such activity stabilizes to a multigraph. This multigraph is composed of isomorphic subgraphs which all represent solutions to the query made. Such a model has a number of advantages over other methods in that irrelevant connections are avoided by superimposing positionally dependent sub-structures that are identical, variable binding can be encoded and multiple solutions can be extracted simultaneously. The model also has the ability to adapt its existing architecture when presented with new clauses and therefore add new relationships/rules to the model explicitly; this is done by some partial retraining of the network due to the superimposition properties.  相似文献

In the future vision of allowing a single operator to remotely control multiple unmanned vehicles, it is not well understood what cognitive constraints limit the number of vehicles and related tasks that a single operator can manage. This paper illustrates that, when predicting the number of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that a single operator can control, it is important to model the sources of wait times (WTs) caused by human-vehicle interaction, particularly since these times could potentially lead to a system failure. Specifically, these sources of vehicle WTs include cognitive reorientation and interaction WT (WTI), queues for multiple-vehicle interactions, and loss of situation awareness (SA) WTs. When WTs were included, predictions using a multiple homogeneous and independent UAV simulation dropped by up to 67%, with a loss of SA as the primary source of WT delays. Moreover, this paper demonstrated that even in a highly automated management-by-exception system, which should alleviate queuing and WTIs, operator capacity is still affected by the SA WT, causing a 36% decrease over the capacity model with no WT included.  相似文献
