This paper examines the full costs, defined as the sum of private and social costs, of a high-speed rail system proposed
for a corridor connecting Los Angeles and San Francisco in California. The full costs include infrastructure, fleet capital
and operating expenses, the time users spend on the system, and the social costs of externalities, such as noise, pollution,
and accidents. Comparing these full costs to those of other competing modes contributes to the evaluation of the feasibility
of high-speed rail in the corridor. The paper concludes that high-speed rail is significantly more costly than expanding existing
air service, and marginally more expensive than auto travel. This suggests that high-speed rail is better positioned to serve
shorter distance markets where it competes with auto travel than longer distance markets where it substitutes for air.

One of the most important challenges in treating cancer is the invasion and the angiogenesis of cancer cells. The synthesis of green nanoparticles (NPs) and their use in therapeutic fields is one of the most effective methods with minimal side effects in cancer treatment. In this study, cytotoxic and anti‐angiogenic effects of silver NPs (AgNPs) coated with palm pollen extract [Ag–PP(NPs)] were evaluated. For this purpose, the cells were treated with NPs and then were subjected to trypan blue testing (48 h). Then, the cancer invasion was evaluated by the scratch procedure and the expressions of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptor (VEGF‐R) genes were estimated using real‐time PCR assay. Also, the angiogenesis effect of the NPs was investigated with chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. The Ag–PP(NPs) induced cytotoxicity on MCF7 cells. The findings also showed that Ag–PP(NPs) inhibit invasive cancer cells and reduce the expression of VEGF and VEGF‐R and significantly reduced the number and vessels lengths and the lengths and weights of the embryos in CAM assay. The slow crack growth (SCG) in high density polyethylene (HDPE) is a phenomenon dominated by crazing. In this work, the crazing was analyzed from a microstructural point of view. PENT (Pennsylvania Edge Notched Tensile) test was chosen to study the evolution of the craze with time for different resins from PE‐80 up to PE‐100 grades. Two different geometries, the standard and an alternative named CDNT (Circumferentially Deep Notched Tensile), were employed. Failure times were correlated with intercrystalline parameters like tie molecules and the molecular weight between entanglements. Experimental results showed good correlations using both direct SCG test (standard PENT and CDNT geometries). Finally, the strain hardening modulus was correlated with PENT failure times. The results disclosed an outstanding correlation for several polyethylene grades from blow molding up to PE‐80, PE‐100, and higher resistant to crack grades. These results permitted an easy‐classifying and ranking method as much to the old polyethylene grades as to the new generation of HDPE resins with a very high SCG resistance. POLYM. ENG. Detergents are an absolute requirement for studying the structure of membrane proteins. However, many conventional detergents fail to stabilise denaturation‐sensitive membrane proteins, such as eukaryotic proteins and membrane protein complexes. New amphipathic agents with enhanced efficacy in stabilising membrane proteins will be helpful in overcoming the barriers to studying membrane protein structures. We have prepared a number of deoxycholate‐based amphiphiles with carbohydrate head groups, designated deoxycholate‐based glycosides (DCGs). These DCGs are the hydrophilic variants of previously reported deoxycholate‐based N‐oxides (DCAOs). Membrane proteins in these agents, particularly the branched diglucoside‐bearing amphiphiles DCG‐1 and DCG‐2, displayed favourable behaviour compared to previously reported parent compounds (DCAOs) and conventional detergents (LDAO and DDM). Cellulose acetate (CA) is highly comparable to other synthetic polymer materials and is effective in the hemodialysis process. In this work, asymmetric CA membranes were synthesized with the phase‐inversion method. CA with a molecular weight of 52,000, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with a molecular weight of 400, and 1‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP) were used as the polymer, additive, and solvent, respectively. The effects of the CA and PEG concentrations and coagulation bath temperature (CBT) on the morphology, pure water permeability (PWP), insulin/human serum albumin (HSA) transmission, and finally thermal and chemical stability of the prepared membranes were determined and investigated. In general, increasing the PEG concentration and CBT and reducing the CA concentration resulted in increased PWP and insulin/HSA transmission. Also, these variations facilitated the formation of macrovoids in the membrane sublayer. On the other hand, increasing the PEG and CA concentrations and reducing CBT resulted in increased thermal and chemical stability of the prepared membranes. Also, ratios of 15.5/10/74.5 and 17.5/10/72.5 (w/w) for the CA/PEG/NMP casting solutions and their immersion into coagulation baths with CBTs of 0 and 25°C, respectively, resulted in the preparation of membranes that had not only optimum sieving properties and higher PWP but also thermal and chemical stability better than that of conventional CA hemodialysis membranes. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of small Al addition on pressureless-sintering and mechanical properties of B4C ceramic was analyzed. Different amounts of aluminium powder, from 0% to 5 wt%, were added to the base material and pressureless-sintering was conducted at 2050 and 2150 °C under argon atmosphere. Microstructure, crystalline phases, density evolution, fracture strength, elastic modulus, hardness and fracture toughness were analyzed and correlated to Al additions and firing temperature. Density and grain size of sintered samples increased significantly with Al load while the effect of sintering temperature was less evident; 94% dense material was obtained by adding 4 wt% Al. Bending strength, hardness and fracture toughness of sintered B4C samples were shown to increase for Al content up to 4 wt% while further additions resulted in a decrease of the mechanical resistance. Conversely, elastic modulus showed an increase with Al load especially between 1 and 3 wt%. 相似文献

In this study, a new method is introduced for the determination of dye concentration in fabrics dyed with bicomponent dye mixtures. The reflectance spectra of the samples dyed with different binary mixtures of dyes were recorded between 400 and 700 nm. The obtained spectra were divided by a standard spectrum of each of the components in the mixtures and the derivative spectra were calculated. The amounts of dyes were determined by measurements in suitably selected wavelengths in the acquired derivative ratio spectra. The obtained results indicate that the developed derivative ratio spectra method is more accurate than the normal Kubelka–Munk method. In this paper, two Zigler-Natta catalysts (ZNCs) were used to synthesize a commercially available linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), widely used in the packaging industry, on an industrial scale. The catalysts differ only in their ability to distribute comonomers between short and long chains. Both catalysts were fully characterized in the first section, and two similar ethylene/1-butene copolymers were made using them. Afterward, the produced copolymers were fully characterized using different techniques; namely, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), successive self-nucleation and annealing (SSA), oxygen induction time (OIT), melt flow index (MFI), rheometric mechanical spectroscopy (RMS), and a wide range of mechanical experiments. It was revealed that while the presence of comonomers in short chains can reduce their resistance against oxidation (by more than 30%) and can cause a dramatic change in friction coefficients (by more than 20%), some of the other main mechanical properties of the made copolymers were independent of comonomer distribution between long and short chains. In addition, it was shown that ethylenic copolymers' strain hardening modulus (SHM) takes advantage of the homogenous distribution. 相似文献
