Cats (Felis catus) find an object when it is visibly moved behind a succession of screens. However, when the object is moved behind a container and is invisibly transferred from the container to the back of a screen, cats try to find the object at or near the container rather than at the true hiding place. Four experiments were conducted to study search behavior and working memory in visible and invisible displacement tests of object permanence. Exp 1 compared performance in single and in double visible displacement trials. Exp 2 analyzed search behavior in invisible displacement tests and in analogs using a transparent container. Exps 3 and 4 tested predictions made from Exps 1 and 2 in a new situation of object permanence. Results showed that only the position changes that cats have directly perceived are encoded and activated in working memory because they are unable to represent or infer invisible movements. Light can be confined efficiently in the high-Q, small-volume whispering-gallery-modes observed in silica microspheres. By coupling these microspheres to eroded optical fibers and fiber tips, direct mapping of the whispering-gallery modes has been achieved and the mode numbers have been assessed. The properties of these modes have allowed us to obtain laser action with very low thresholds in Nd-doped silica microspheres. This article depicts some features of the geography of science and technology outputs in the EU, with a particular attention
to regional “co-location” of these two pillars of the “knowledge-based society”. Economists have, for a decade, paid great
attention to local “spillovers” stating that industrial firms often draw advantages from the presence of nearby academic centres.
The presence in the same areas of strong academic and technological resources is both a condition and a result of science-technology
interactions. Concentrating on publications and patents as proxies of the science and technology level in regions, we built
a typology of regions according to their commitment to the two knowledge-base activities and then analysed the co-locations
of science and technology from several points of view. A fine-grain lattice, mainly based on standard Nuts3 level, was used.
Co-location, at the EU level, is not a general rule. A strong potential for spillover/ interaction does exist in the top-class
regions which concentrate a high proportion of European S and T output. But for regions with a small/medium level of S&T activity,
a divergence of orientations appears between a science-oriented family and a technology-oriented family, indicating an imbalance
between local S and T resources. If we look at the S-oriented regions, whilst controlling for underlying factors, such as
population and regional economic product, a significant geographic linkage between T and S appears. This suggests a trajectory
of science-based technological development. A careful examination of S&T thematic alignments and specialisation is necessary
to develop the hypothesis that fostering academic resources could increase the technological power along a growth path.

This study aims to determine whether indirect touch device can be used to interact with graphical objects displayed on another screen in an air traffic control (ATC) context. The introduction of such a device likely requires an adaptation of the sensory-motor system. The operator has to simultaneously perform movements on the horizontal plane while assessing them on the vertical plane. Thirty-six right-handed participants performed movement training with either constant or variable practice and with or without visual feedback of the displacement of their actions. Participants then performed a test phase without visual feedback. Performance improved in both practice conditions, but accuracy was higher with visual feedback. During the test phase, movement time was longer for those who had practiced with feedback, suggesting an element of dependency. However, this ‘cost’ of feedback did not extend to movement accuracy. Finally, participants who had received variable training performed better in the test phase, but accuracy was still unsatisfactory. Tomographic reconstruction of a binary image from few projections is considered. A novel heuristic algorithm is proposed, the central element of which is a nonlinear transformation ψ(p)=log(p/(1?p)) of the probability p that a pixel of the sought image be 1-valued. It consists of backprojections based on ψ(p) and iterative corrections. Application of this algorithm to a series of artificial test cases leads to exact binary reconstructions, (i.e., recovery of the binary image for each single pixel) from the knowledge of projection data over a few directions. Images up to 106 pixels are reconstructed in a few seconds. A series of test cases is performed for comparison with previous methods, showing a better efficiency and reduced computation times. 相似文献

For photon emission tomography, the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator for image reconstruction is generally solution to a nonlinear equation involving the vector of measured data. No explicit closed-form solution is known in general for such a nonlinear ML equation, and numerical resolution is usually implemented, with a very popular iterative method formed by the expectation-maximization algorithm. The numerical character of such resolutions usually makes it difficult to obtain a general characterization of the performance of the ML solution. We show that the nonlinear ML equation can be replaced by an equivalent system of two dual linear equations nonlinearly coupled. This formulation allows us to exhibit explicit (to some extent) forms for the solutions to the ML equation, in general conditions corresponding to the various possible configurations of the imaging system, and to characterize their performance with expressions for the mean-squared error, bias and Cramér-Rao bound. The approach especially applies to characterize the ML solutions obtained numerically, and offers a theoretical framework to contribute to better appreciation of the capabilities of ML reconstruction in photon emission tomography. 相似文献
