A case of porencephaly with mirror movements: pathophysiological investigation by using long-latency long-loop reflex and dipole tracing method

We report a 42-year-old left-handed woman with congenital right hemiparesis and bilateral mirror movements in the hands. She had a porencephaly of the left hemisphere and the brain MRI demonstrated cortical and subcortical defect of the left hemisphere from Brodmann's area 6 to 40 including the left motor cortex. By electrical stimulation of the left median nerve at the wrist, N20 of the somatosensory evoked potential was recorded in the right postcentral gyrus by using the dipole tracing method. Long-loop reflexes from the bilateral thenar muscles were recorded and their latencies were almost the same. The stimulation of the right median nerve did not evoke N20, nor long-loop reflex. These electrophysiological findings suggest that the reorganization of the motor system made the right motor cortex to innervate bilateral hands, and caused bilateral mirror movements. In other words, the mirror movements managed to relieve the paralysis of the right hand though the damage of the left motor cortex was present. In the previous literature we are able to find hypotheses regarding the mechanism of mirror movements in congenital hemiparesis. Here we discussed about the reorganization of the motor system in the damaged brain.     

A power flow tracing method focused on reactive power and SC

“Tracing the power flow of electricity” is a concept that has become the focus of attention recently, as the deregulation or the liberalization of the electric power market proceeds. Although a number of methods, such as “tracing method by power flow contribution,” have already been published, reactive power contribution has been little studied to date. However, applying “tracing the power flow of electricity” to ancillary service, for example compensation of reactive power, is very important. In this paper, we focus on line flows and static capacitors in particular, and study how to deal with the problem. We perform a computer simulation using a simple system and show the tracing results. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The lubricating ability of biomembrane models with dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine and gamma-globulin

This paper describes the process of involving health professions students in research in rural primary care and how their research has contributed to the development and expansion of a rural community health center. Since 1978 over 400 students have completed rotations at the center, and more than 200 have been health profession students, including medical, nursing, physician assistant, pharmacy, and health administration students. A total of 96 research projects were completed. These projects lie in two main areas: medical services and community outreach. Those related to medical services include measures of access to care, quality of care audits, clinical guideline development, practice patterns, prevalence studies, and qualitative research. Projects focusing on community outreach include community surveys, screening follow-ups, program evaluation, and program development. Principles that guide the selection and conduct of research projects include: Projects should be directly related to important work of the practice and reflect an interest of the student; projects are structured to include some or all of the following: literature search, data analysis, a visual display of quantitative information (table or graph), and application of relevant statistical tools; the student has a project supervisor; the student is a participant rather than an independent investigator; and a research flow sheet is used to orient students and NRHA staff to the larger research effort. Students are expected to present results, conclusions and recommendations to an appropriate group. Student research has made a significant contribution to both practice activities and practice policies.     

A case of primary malignant lymphoma of the bladder

There are few reports of the sonographic appearance of Meckel's diverticulum. We present a case of torsion of a Meckel's diverticulum that was suggested by sonography and confirmed pathologically. We discuss the sonographic differential diagnosis, which includes acute appendicitis, enteric duplication cyst and intestinal volvulus.     

Ethylene oxide sterilization of bone grafts. Residual gas concentration and fibroblast toxicity

We examined the concentration of ethylene oxide in bone allografts after gas sterilization. Chips of the human femoral head were investigated. Residual gas concentration was determined by gas chromatography after the bone chips had been subjected to defatting and freeze-drying, followed by ethylene oxide gas sterilization. Bones were prepared in various ways in an attempt to reduce the concentration of residual ethylene oxide. The concentration was higher when gas sterilization was performed before freeze-drying than when it was done afterwards. An experiment performed with fibroblasts showed the high toxicity of residual ethylene oxide in bone chips, even when the concentration was very low. The growth of fibroblast was reduced more in medium which had been shaken with bones sterilized with ethylene oxide before freeze-drying than in medium which had been shaken with bones sterilized after freeze-drying. The higher residual ethylene oxide concentrations resulted in a decrease in fibroblastic culture activity. Our experiment showed the importance of reducing the residual ethylene oxide gas concentration. Defatting and freeze-drying result in lower residual ethylene oxide concentrations.     

Novel photoresist stripping technology using ozone/vaporized water mixture

The authors have developed a new process as an alternative to sulfuric peroxide mixture (SPM) cleaning of Si wafers. This process, vapor ozone strip (VOS), uses ozone and vaporized water, significantly reducing any effect on environment, health and safety. The process is more effective than ozone water immersion, because high concentration ozone gas and high temperature water can be used simultaneously. Also, the process uses the highly reactive OH* radical species. The VOS process is able to strip photoresist at a higher rate than other techniques using ozone. Ion implanted photoresist and etched photoresist can be stripped. VOS has demonstrated equivalent performance to SPM in electrical reliability testing.     

Differences in muscle and fat accretion in Japanese Black and European cattle

The development of different muscles and adipose tissues during growth was investigated in commercial Japanese Black (JB) cattle and compared with breeds of the largest variation to be found in Europe. Animals, reared under typical conditions for Japanese and European beef production systems, gained similar body weights but different carcass composition at 24 months of age. The carcass of JB contained more adipose tissue and the least proportion of muscle. The longissimus muscle of JB developed extraordinary amounts of 23.3% intramuscular fat (IMF) at 24 months of age, compared from 0.6% to 4.7% in European breeds. The relationships between IMF content in the longissimus muscle and different adipose tissue weights indicate that a large amount of “waste fat” is accreted with every percent of IMF. However in JB, the good ability of IMF deposition is associated with relatively least development of “waste fat”, as a result of unique breed characteristics combined with special feeding system.     

Dyeing Properties of Monoazo Dyes Derived from Aminonophthothiazole Derivatives

The preparation and dyeing properties of new monoazo dyes prepared from aminonophthothiazole derivatives using a tertiary amine as the coupling component. The fibres considered are: polyester, cellulose acetate, nylon 6 and acrylic.     

Diffusion behavior of fission product in pyrolytic silicon carbide

The concentration distributions of ¹³³Xe, ¹⁴⁰Ba, ⁸⁹Sr, ¹⁴¹Ce, ¹⁰³Ru and ⁹⁵Zr-⁹⁵Nb in a SiC layer and releases of these fission products from SiC coated fuel particles were measured in a temperature range from 1650° to 1850°C, to obtain the diffusion parameters and to investigate the diffusion behaviors in SiC. Temperature dependences of the diffusion coefficients of these fission products except ⁹⁵Zr-⁹⁵Nb were obtained. In diffusion behaviors of the alkali earth fission product, volume diffusion occured considerably besides grain boundary above 1650°C. ¹⁴¹Ce and ¹⁰³Ru diffusions were almost through grain boundaries in the temperature range. ⁹⁵Zr-⁹⁵Nb showed volume diffusion besides boundaries diffusion in their distribution annealed at 1850°C for 35 h, but those for the shorter time or at the lower temperature would be due to boundary diffusion. In comparison of the diffusion coefficients in SiC and PyC, it was proved that SiC was effective for retention of the solid fission products.
