Morphological changes of Candida albicans induced by micafungin (FK463), a water-soluble echinocandin-like lipopeptide

Micafungin (FK463), a novel water-soluble echinocandin-like lipopeptide, exerted fungicidal action toward growing cells of Candida albicans at concentrations of 0.1 microg ml(-1) or above. The drug at these levels induced osmotically fragile cells and the resulting fungicidal effect was partially reversed when cultures were grown in the presence of an osmotic stabilizer. Candida cells incubated with fungicidal concentrations of micafungin gradually increased in size and/or became deformed. An electron microscopic study of such micafungin-treated cells revealed morphological alterations in the cell wall; deformation in contour, abnormal septum formation and decrease in thickness of the intermediate layer of the cell wall were prominent. In addition, the structure of cell membranes as well as of membranous cytoplasmic organelles was slightly impaired. These data suggest that micafungin principally affects the normal formation of the cell wall in growing Candida cells.     

Structural identification and software package for linear multivariable systems

This paper is concerned with the structural identification of linear multivariable systems and an interactive identification package. The structural identification is done by taking the time-invariant subsystem from the realizations of the input-output relations identified using data of disjoint time intervals, and the statistical hypothesis test is employed to determine the order, where the input-output relation is identified based on the generalized least squares method using the possibly larger model for the plant. The identification package is for the identification of the input-output relation of a linear multivariable system, for the structural identification based on the realization and for data management.     

Monotonicity in Optimal Policy of a Flexible Manufacturing Cell Feeding Several Production Lines

This paper deals with an optimal part selection problem tominimize the expected cost, in an automated manufacturing system in which a flexible manufacturing cell produces different parts for several production lines. The optimal control problem is formulated as an undiscounted semi-Markov decision process. Properties of the optimal policy are analyzed. Moreover, sufficiency conditions are derived for the optimal policy to be of control iimit type.     

Optical Amplification at 1.3 μm in a Praseodymium-Doped Sulfide-Glass Fiber

Praseodymium-doped glasses were prepared in the Ga-Na-S (GNS) system and their optical properties were studied. A single-mode fiber with an attenuation loss of 1.2 dB/m at a wavelength of 1.31 μm was fabricated using an extrusion method, and the amplification characteristics were measured in the bidirectional pumping configuration. We demonstrated a gain coefficient of 0.81 dB/mW at a wavelength of 1.34 μm, which is the highest we have ever reported, and achieved a net gain of 32 dB for a pump power of 90 mW. Highly efficient optical amplification at a wavelength of 1.3 μm was demonstrated in the praseodymium-doped GNS fiber.     

Lightning occurrence data observed with lightning location systems of electric power companies in Japan: 2009–2013

Nine electric power companies in Japan have been collecting lightning data with lightning location systems. Five years of the lightning data (2009–2013) are summarized and analyzed in this paper. The recent annual number of lightning flashes of which the current is more than 10 kA in Japan is around 1 million. The variations of lightning occurrence characteristics by areas, seasons, and so on, are clarified. Meteorological conditions that may affect lightning occurrence are also discussed. Furthermore, we show that there is a clear correlation between the number of lightning strikes and the outage rate of transmission lines. © 2016 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Preparation and Faraday Effect of Fluoroaluminate Glasses Containing Divalent Europium Ions

Fluoroaluminate glasses containing various concentrations of Eu²⁺ were prepared under a reducing atmosphere for the present study, and the wavelength dependence of the Faraday rotation angle was examined. The magnitude of the Verdet constant (V_c) increased as the concentration of Eu²⁺ increased. In addition, the Verdet constant of glasses containing 5 cat.% Eu²⁺ was larger than that of fluoroaluminate glasses containing the same concentration of Tb³⁺ in the wavelength region from 400 to 600 nm. The effective transition wavelength, λ_t, for glasses containing Eu²+ as well as those containing Tb³+ was evaluated based on the Van Vleck and Hebb theory. Factors dominating the Verdet constant of those glasses are discussed in this report.     

Self-tuning control based on generalized minimum variance criterion for auto-regressive models

Theoretical problems on self-tuning control include stability, performance and convergence of the recursive algorithm involved. In this paper, the problem of controlling minimum or non-minimum phase auto-regressive models with constant but unknown parameters is considered. The stability of an algorithm obtained by combining a recursive estimator for the controller parameters and a generalized minimum variance criterion is proved. The main result is the theorem which assures the overall stability for the closed-loop system in presence of white noise in the input-output relation, where the estimated parameters do not necessarily converge to the true values. The algorithm is proved by the Lyapunov theory.     

Stochastic analysis of a U-shaped production line with multiple workers

In a conveyor system for mass production as in the Ford system, each station processes just one item in one cycle time, where the cycle time is the time-interval between two successive outputs. In a Just-In-Time production system, a single-unit production and conveyance system is applied to a part production line without conveyors, and multi-function workers and a U-shaped layout of machines have been introduced. The multi-function worker takes charge of multiple machines. In this paper, we consider a U-shaped line with multiple multi-function workers, each of which is responsible for several machines. We formulate it into a marked Petri net, which has a convex property of a generalized semi-Markov process. This shows that the cycle times of two different systems are comparable in the sense of an increasing convex order. We also show the reversibility of the system, that is, the expected cycle time of the reversed system where each worker operates items and walks in the reversed order of stations is the same as that of the original system.     

100 Å-thick tunnel junction by double impurity doping liquid phase epitaxy for V-band TUNNETT oscillation

The tunnel injection transit time (TUNNETT) diodes with p⁺p⁺n⁺n⁻n⁺ structure were fabricated by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE). About 100 Å tunnel junction (p⁺n⁺) was successfully prepared by the double impurity diffusion of Ge and S during LPE growth. Continuous wave (CW) oscillation was realized at 51.520 GHz in the V-band cavity with the phase noise of −60 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz bandwidth.
