Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) materials possess inherently high strength-to-weight ratios, but their effective elastic moduli are low relative to civil engineering (CE) construction materials. While elastic modulus may be comparable to that of some CE materials, the lower shear modulus adversely affects stiffness. As a result, serviceability issues are what govern GFRP deck design in the CE bridge industry. An innovative solution to increase the stiffness of a commercial GFRP reinforced-sinusoidal honeycomb sandwich panel was proposed; this solution would completely replace the GFRP honeycomb core with a hexagonal honeycomb core constructed from commercial steel roof decking. The purpose of this study was to perform small-scale tests to characterize the steel hexagonal honeycomb core equivalent elastic moduli in an effort to simplify the modeling of the core. The steel core equivalent moduli experimental results were compared with theoretical hexagonal honeycomb elastic modulus equations from the literature, demonstrating the applicability of the theoretical equations to the steel honeycomb core. Core equivalent elastic modulus equations were then proposed to model and characterize the steel hexagonal honeycomb as applicable to sandwich panel design. The equivalent honeycomb core will enable an efficient sandwich panel stiffness design technique, both for structural analysis methods (i.e., hand calculations) and finite-element analysis procedures. 相似文献

Resource sharing among co-located firms--referenced in the industrial ecology literature as "industrial symbiosis"--engages traditionally separate industries in a collective approach to business and environmental management involving the physical exchanges of materials, energy, water, and byproducts. While industrial symbiosis is seen hypothetically as a win-win situation, there are few analyses of the economic and environmental consequences for the individual participants in multi-faceted exchanges. In this article, the nascent industrial symbiosis network in Guayama, Puerto Rico, is explored from environmental, economic, and regulatory perspectives of the individual participants and the community. A coal-fired power plant, owned and operated by the AES Corporation, draws five million gallons per day of process water from nearby sources thus avoiding freshwater withdrawals and, through steam sales, significantly reduces emissions from a nearby refinery. This article quantifies economic and environmental costs and benefits for the symbiosis participants, concluding that there are substantial benefits to engaging in symbiosis, although these benefits fall unevenly on participating organizations. Policy intervention can be a viable means of motivating more regular occurrences of resource exchanges among groups of firms. 相似文献

Eighty-nine strains of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis isolated from Italian hard and semi-hard cheeses and artisan starter cultures were characterised by phenotypic and genotypic methods. Phenotypic diversity was evaluated by studying biochemical characteristics (i.e. acidifying and peptidase activities) of technological interest. Genotypic diversity was evidenced by RAPD-PCR and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Phenotypic characterisation indicated a wide variability of the acidifying activity within Lact. delbrueckii subsp. lactis. Although the data was variable, it allowed us to evidence groups of strains with different acidifying properties, especially in terms of acidification intensity. Concerning peptidase activity, Lact. delbrueckii subsp. lactis showed a homogeneously high x-prolil-dipeptidil-aminopeptidase activity and a considerable but more heterogeneous lysil-aminopeptidase activity. The increased resolution obtained by the use of two molecular typing techniques, i.e. RAPD-PCR and PFGE, allowed to widen the level of strain heterogeneity. Technological and ecological pressures are determinant in selecting Lact. delbrueckii subsp. lactis sub-populations which are more functional to the different cheese technologies. 相似文献

In the present work, 67 strains of Lactobacillus helveticus isolated from whey starter cultures and cheeses were identified and grouped by genotypic and phenotypic methods. Strains were identified by sugar fermentation pattern, by cell-wall protein profile, and by probe hybridisation. Phenotypic diversity was evaluated by a chemometric model taking into account biochemical characteristics (i.e. acidifying and peptidase activities) of technological interest. Genotypic diversity was evidenced by RAPD-PCR, which provided stran-specific patterns and revealed the occurrence of different strains. The RAPD-PCR profiles were clustered according to their similarities: the groups obtained, together with the cell-wall protein profiling and the chemometric information, could be sometimes correlated with the type of cheese and/or dairy niches used as sources of strains. A computerised analysis of genotypic and phenotypic information could be successfully applied for rapid and reliable differentiation and characterisation of Lb. helveticus isolates occurring in different dairy products. 相似文献

This paper presents analytic models for evaluating test-strategy (TS) for yield enhancement of systems manufactured using fault-tolerant (FTol) multichip modules (MCM) for massively parallel computing. Several methods for testing FTol-MCM have been proposed, but there is little analytic evaluation. This paper uses a novel Markov model to compute the yield. Unlike a previous method which uses a binomial distribution, our TS can use intermediate tests (Intmed-T). This paper shows an efficient TS with a modest level of redundancy to achieve 100% first-pass MCM yield for a particular system. Two methods using Intmed-T for FTol-MCM are proposed and analyzed. When Intmed-T are used for all mounted chips, FTol-MCM with more than a few chips require known-good chips of at least a 99.9% probability-good for achieving a high yield. An efficient TS with a modest level of redundancy can exist for achieving a 100% first-pass MCM yield for a particular system. A yield-analysis model using the least recently tested (LRT) TS in this paper provides a very good figure-of-merit due to its cost, delivery, number of tests, and reliability benefits for current technology. Extensive parametric results for the analysis show that LRT-TS can be applied to calculate the overall yield for FTol-MCM more accurately and efficiently, thereby improving the system reliability 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of postoperative thyroxine on the volume of the thyroid remnant after lobectomy for benign nontoxic goitre. DESIGN: Prospective, randomised study. SETTING: University hospital, Sweden. SUBJECTS: 50 consecutive patients who underwent lobectomy for benign non-toxic goitre. INTERVENTIONS: Patients were randomised postoperatively to take thyroxine 0.1 mg or placebo daily. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The median volume of the remaining thyroid lobe measured by ultrasound. Serum concentrations of thyroxine, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) were measured preoperatively and 1, 3, 6, 12 months postoperatively. RESULTS: The median volume of the remaining lobe had increased significantly compared with preoperatively by 1 month postoperatively by 30% in the thyroxine group and 25% in the placebo group (p < 0.01). The difference between the groups was not significant. After the first month the volume did not change significantly. In the thyroxine group, the TSH concentration was unchanged and the thyroxine concentration increased significantly throughout the study. In the placebo group there was a significant increase in TSH concentration and a significant decrease in that of thyroxine at all follow-up examinations. CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant increase in the volume of the remaining thyroid 1 month after lobectomy that persisted throughout the first year. Thyroxine given in a dose that kept the serum TSH concentration at the same level as preoperatively did not seem to influence volume changes; consequently we consider that these are caused by factors other than TSH. 相似文献
