Preparation of fatty acid methyl esters for gas-chromatographic analysis of lipids in biological materials

Theoretically, preparation of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) deals with reversible chemical reactions in a complex system. Methodologically, there are numerous ways, generally characterized by the type of catalysts used and steps involved. Although there are more than a half dozen common catalysts, the majority fall into either acidic (HCl, H₂SO₄ and BF₃) or alkaline types (NaOCH₃, KOH and NaOH), with each having its own catalytic capability and application limitations. In terms of steps, many conventional methods, including those officially recognized, consist of drying, digestion, extraction, purification, alkaline hydrolysis, transmethylation/methylation and postreaction work-up. Although these methods are capable of providing reliable estimates if some precautions are taken, they are cumbersome, time-consuming and cost-inefficient. A new approach has been to transmethylate lipidsin situ. Due to its simplicity, high sensitivity, comparable reliability and capability to determine total fatty acids, the method of direct transmethylation is finding a unique place in lipid determination. Regardless of which method is used, quantitative methylation requires chemists to take precautions at every step involved, particularly during FAME formation and subsequent recovery steps. Evidently, there is an urgent need for more systematic studies, guided by the chemical principle of reactions involved and physicochemical properties of regents and end products, into factors affecting these steps. Hopefully, this will lead to an improved method, which measures lipid composition in biological materials not only with high accuracy but also with high efficiency and minimum costs.

Multiresolution analysis in extraction of reference lines fromdocuments with gray level background

Based on wavelets, a theoretical method has been developed to process multi-gray level documents. In this method, two-dimensional multiresolution analysis, a wavelet decomposition algorithm, and compactly supported orthonormal wavelets are used to transform a document image into sub-images. According to these sub-images, the reference lines of a multi-gray level document can be extracted, and knowledge about the geometric structure of the document can be acquired. Particularly, this approach is more efficient to process form documents with gray level background. Experiments indicate that this new method can be applied to process documents with promising results

Patients' awareness of stroke signs, symptoms, and risk factors

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We sought to determine knowledge at the time of symptom onset regarding the signs, symptoms, and risk factors of stroke in patients presenting to the emergency department with potential stroke. METHODS: Patients admitted from the emergency department with possible stroke were identified prospectively. A standardized, structured interview with open-ended questions was performed within 48 hours of symptom onset to assess patients' knowledge base concerning stroke signs, symptoms, and risk factors. RESULTS: Of the 174 eligible patients, 163 patients were able to respond to the interview questions. Of these 163 patients, 39% (63) did not know a single sign or symptom of stroke. Unilateral weakness (26%) and numbness (22%) were the most frequently noted symptoms. Patients aged > or = 65 years were less likely to know a sign or symptom of stroke than those aged < 65 years (percentage not knowing a single sign or symptom, 47% versus 28%, P = .016). Similarly, 43% of patients did not know a single risk factor for stroke. The elderly were less likely to know a risk factor than their younger counterparts. CONCLUSIONS: Almost 40% of patients admitted with a possible stroke did not know the signs, symptoms, or risk factor of a stroke. Further public education is needed to increase awareness of the warning signs and risk factors of stroke.

Analytical solution for orthotropic composite plate containing a mode I crack along principle axis

Analytical stress analyses are presented for orthotropic composite materials containing a through crack under uniaxial normal loads (mode I). A harmonic differential equation has been established for the orthotropic plates with axes normal to the three orthogonal planes of material symmetry by introducing new complex variables. The complex theory was employed to find stress functions to satisfy the equilibrium equation, compatibility equation and boundary condition at infinite and crack surfaces. An analytical solution was examined in the case of isotropic materials. It is demonstrated that the analytical solution obtained is correct for the orthotropic composite plates.
