“Open” systems relaying

This paper describes a development in relaying hardware and philosophy which has been made possible by DSPs and industrial grade PCs. Details are given of a prototype design capable of being assembled and configured by a utility and results of tests on this prototype using the RTDS at the Manitoba HVDC Research Centre are presented. The project is a joint effort between the University of Manitoba and Manitoba Hydro     

5,5-trans lactone-containing inhibitors of serine proteases: identification of a novel, acylating thrombin inhibitor

Synthesis of a variety of 5,5-trans fused lactones, related to compounds found in extracts of Lantana camara, has provided a series of novel acylating inhibitors of human thrombin, trypsin, chymotrypsin and human leucocyte elastase. The most effective thrombin inhibitor is 7 with an IC50 of 130 nM and a Kobs/[1] of 4,000 M-1 s-1.     

A Rotor Condition Monitor for Squirrel-Cage Induction Machines

Rotor temperature is of concern in both short-term machine protection and in longer term condition monitoring systems for large induction machines. Unduly large temperatures can arise under severe operating conditions such as stall and overload. A cage rotor condition monitoring system using direct temperature measurement is described. Under running conditions, it continuously transmits temperature information about strategic points on the rotor via an optical link. Possible rotor circuit imperfections are broken bars and end rings, single or multiple, and the deterioration of bar/end ring joints. The possibility of using temperature information for the identification of these faults is also investigated.     

Effects of adding chelated and non-chelated copper and cobalt to a deficient soil on the content of these nutrients in clover and ryegrass

In a pot trial carried out with a mineral-deficient soil, applications of copper and cobalt significantly increased the content of these nutrients and manganese in ryegrass and clover. When used at the same rate of application of copper or cobalt, EDTA chelates were found to be no more effective than simple sulphates in increasing the copper and cobalt content. Low rates of application of copper-EDTA produced insignificant increases in the copper content of herbage, and increases in cobalt content brought about by low application rates of cobalt-EDTA were short lived. Incorporation of copper sulphate into the soil produced far larger increases in herbage copper concentration than copper sulphate applied to the soil surface.     

Colour–Difference Measurement – A Reliable Basis for Quality Control

AN LAB space, one of the most uniform, was not suitable for single number shade passing but, because it and its successor CIE LAB readily allow colour differences to be split into three components, it has permitted two methods of instrumental shade passing to be developed, which have been widely used in dyehouses and quality control laboratories, viz. colour–specific shade passing and the development of optimized equations. Three different methods of splitting are described in detail.     

Strength-probability-time (SPT) relationships in ceramics

The concept of the SPT diagram for ceramics is introduced as an essential aid to the design engineer when using engineering ceramics. For given conditions of stress state and distribution, environment, temperature and component size, the diagram enables estimates of a safe working stress to be made for specific component lifetimes and survival probabilities. The theory underlying the SPT diagram is reviewed. This involves the merging of the concepts of statistical variations in strength, with sub-critical crack growth which leads to delayed fracture. It is shown how the SPT diagram can be generated by simple measurements of the strain rate dependence of fracture strength. Data for the delayed fracture of alumina are used to demonstrate the reliability of SPT diagram.
