Quality assessment of agricultural products has been the subject of numerous reviews; however, not many papers address internal visualization as a means of quality grading. This paper reviews established as well as emerging visualization techniques utilized in the quality assessment of food products. In this discourse, the authors set out to underscore some of the most novel signal processing techniques employed in the non-destructive grading of agricultural products by way of an automated quality verification system. Such systems utilize advanced engineering principles with imaging, signal processing as well as color differentiation to accomplish the grading task. The materials presented will be useful to agricultural engineers, manufacturing engineers, food engineers and any other researchers in the food and agriculture industries.  相似文献

Palm kernel cake (PKC), the most useful by-product resulted from palm kernel oil production. In this study, PKC-derived protein product was found suitable for use as an antimicrobial agent with potent antibacterial activity, particularly against Bacillus species, after enzymatic hydrolysis with alcalase. The hydrolysate was further purified by gel filtration chromatography. The purified fraction was found to have 14.63 ± 0.70% (w/w) protein, a molecular mass of 2.4 kDa and low hemolytic activity (<50% hemolysis of human erythrocytes at concentration of 1000 μg/ml). The presence of lysine and the major component lauric acid derivative, as indicated by electrospray ionisation-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) direct infusion and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, may have contributed to the antibacterial effect of purified PKC fraction. This study suggests that the antibacterial PKC compound may be not a pure peptide but instead a peptide-containing compound high in lauric acid derivative.  相似文献

Membrane-bound polyphenoloxidase (mPPO) an oxidative enzyme which is responsible for the undesirable browning reaction in Snake fruit (Salacca zalacca (Gaertn.) Voss) was investigated. The enzyme was extracted using a non-ionic detergent (Triton X-114), followed by temperature-induced phase partitioning technique which resulted in two separate layers (detergent-poor phase at the upper layer and detergent-rich phase at the lower layer). The upper detergent-poor phase extract was subsequently fractionated by 40–80% ammonium sulfate and chromatographed on HiTrap Phenyl Sepharose and Superdex 200 HR 10/30. The mPPO was purified to 14.1 folds with a recovery of 12.35%. A single prominent protein band appeared on native-PAGE and SDS–PAGE implying that the mPPO is a monomeric protein with estimated molecular weight of 38 kDa. Characterization study showed that mPPO from Snake fruit was optimally active at pH 6.5, temperature 30 °C and active towards diphenols as substrates. The Km and Vmax values were calculated to be 5.46 mM and 0.98 U/ml/min, respectively, when catechol was used as substrate. Among the chemical inhibitors tested, l-cysteine showed the best inhibitory effect, with an IC50 of 1.3 ± 0.002 mM followed by ascorbic acid (1.5 ± 0.06 mM), glutathione (1.5 ± 0.07 mM), EDTA (100 ± 0.02 mM) and citric acid (186 ± 0.16 mM).  相似文献

This paper presents an evolutionary particle swarm optimization (EPSO) method for solving the nonconvex economic load dispatch (ELD) problem. In practice, the nonconvex and the discontinuous cost function should be considered when optimizing ELD problem with constraints such as valve point effects, prohibited operating zones, ramp‐rate limits, and transmission loss of the system. In view of these constraints, the ELD problem is difficult to solve by any mathematical method. In EPSO, the evolutionary programming concept (combination, tournament competition, sorting, and selection) is employed in the classical PSO method in order to find the best individual and best group position based on the survival particle. The effectiveness of the EPSO is tested on 3‐, 6‐, 15‐, and 38‐unit systems. The results obtained by EPSO are also compared with classical PSO and other results reported in the literature. It is concluded that the EPSO method can produce lower generation cost compared to the existing methods. © 2013 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Though TES (thermal energy storage) is developed hugely in most of the solar power generation plants, it is less growth in implementing a modular type of TES in a solar plant, e.g., solar dish/stifling engine application. The main issue in designing the TES system is its thermal capacity of storage materials, e.g., insulator. This study is focusing on the potential waste material as an insulator for thermal energy storage applications. The insulator usage is to reduce the heat transfer between two mediums and the capability is measured by its resistance to heat flow. It is needed to obtain optimal materials to energy conversion at the same time reduce the waste generation. Therefore, a small-scale experimental testing of natural cooling process of an insulated tank within a confined room without any forced cooling system, e.g., fan. The testing is repeated by changing the insulator using the potential waste material from natural and industrial waste and also by changing the HTF (heat transfer fluid). The analysis is performed on the relationship between heat loss and the reserved period by the insulator. The results indicate the percentage of period of the insulated tank withstands the heat compared to non-insulated tank, e.g., cotton reserved the period of 14% more than non-insulated tank to withstand the heat transfer of cooking oil to the surrounding. The paper finally justifies the most potential waste material as an insulator in different heat transfer fluids.  相似文献

The anti-microbial activity of a range of garlic products including dried garlic powder produced by different methods, commercial garlic products, and garlic oil was determined against a range of selected bacteria. The bacteria included food borne pathogens, spoilage agents, and health-beneficial agents, namely Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Bacillus cereus, and a mixed lactic culture consisting of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus. The dried powders were produced using air-drying at both 60 and 80°C, vacuum-drying at 50 and 60°C, and freeze-drying at ?20°C. In addition, five commercial products were tested, two of which are used as spices, and three as food supplements. Before testing, the moisture content of the dried garlic powders was raised to that of fresh garlic before drying. Garlic oil was used without any addition of water. In general, the results showed that the lactic culture was the most sensitive to the growth inhibitory active compound of garlic used in this study, followed by Staphylococcus aureus. In contrast Salmonella typhimurium and Bacillus cereus demonstrated the greatest resistance to garlic. Generally, fresh garlic produced the greatest inhibition followed by freeze-dried powder. The anti-microbial activity decreased with decreasing dried garlic powder concentration. The results showed that both drying temperature and time have major effects on retaining the active components responsible for the inhibition of microbial growth. The anti-microbial substances in the moist fresh garlic were also affected by moist-heating temperatures and time. Higher heating temperatures caused faster loss of anti-microbial activity. The decrease in growth-inhibition zones for moist-heated fresh garlic followed zero-order kinetics.  相似文献

Polylactic acid (PLA) was melt‐blended with different amount (0 to 50 wt %) of a commercially available ethylene acrylate copolymer impact modifier. PLA/impact modifier blends were prepared via an internal mixer and compression molded into test specimens. The thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties of the blends were investigated. The addition of impact modifier decreased the ability of PLA to crystallize and/or recrystallize. The degree of crystallinity of PLA decreased while the cold crystallization temperature shifted to higher temperatures with increasing the impact modifier content. PLA/impact modifier blends were partially miscible. This was confirmed by the dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) tests. With increasing the impact modifier content, the blends showed some improvement in the elongation at break and notched impact strength indicating the toughening effects of the impact modifier. In contrast, the yield stress and tensile modulus decreased with the increase in the impact modifier content. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs revealed that the toughening mechanisms among others involved shear yielding or plastic deformation of the PLA matrix induced by interfacial debonding between the PLA and the impact modifier domains. PLA with 30 wt % impact modifier showed comparable yield stress and tensile modulus and better elongation at break and impact strength (+90%) than those of polypropylene (PP). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A test for assessing pork adulteration in meatballs, using TaqMan probe real-time polymerase chain reaction, was developed. The assay combined porcine-specific primers and TaqMan probe for the detection of a 109 bp fragment of porcine cytochrome b gene. Specificity test with 10 ng DNA of eleven different species yielded a threshold cycle (Ct) of 15.5 ± 0.20 for the pork and negative results for the others. Analysis of beef meatballs with spiked pork showed the assay can determine 100-0.01% contaminated pork with 102% PCR efficiency, high linear regression (r(2) = 0.994) and ≤ 6% relative errors. Residuals analysis revealed a high precision in all determinations. Random analysis of commercial meatballs from pork, beef, chicken, mutton and goat, yielded a Ct between 15.89 ± 0.16 and 16.37 ± 0.22 from pork meatballs and negative results from the others, showing the suitability of the assay to determine pork in commercial meatballs with a high accuracy and precision.  相似文献

As concern regarding the toxic effects of bisphenol A (BPA) grows, BPA in many consumer products is gradually being replaced with compounds such as bisphenol S (BPS). Nevertheless, data on the occurrence of BPS in human specimens are limited. In this study, 315 urine samples, collected from the general populations in the United States, China, India, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Malaysia, and Vietnam, were analyzed for the presence of total BPS (free plus conjugated) concentrations by high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). BPS was detected in 81% of the urine samples analyzed at concentrations ranging from below the limit of quantitation (LOQ; 0.02 ng/mL) to 21 ng/mL (geometric mean: 0.168 ng/mL). The urinary BPS concentration varied among countries, and the highest geometric mean concentration [1.18 ng/mLor 0.933 μg/g creatinine (Cre)] of BPS was found in urine samples from Japan, followed by the United States (0.299 ng/mL, 0.304 μg/g Cre), China (0.226 ng/mL, 0.223 μg/g Cre), Kuwait (0.172 ng/mL, 0.126 μg/g Cre), and Vietnam (0.160 ng/mL, 0.148 μg/g Cre). Median concentrations of BPS in urine samples from the Asian countries were 1 order of magnitude lower than the median concentrations reported earlier for BPA in the same set of samples, with the exception of samples from Japan. There were no significant differences in BPS concentrations between genders (male versus female), or among age groups (categorized as ≤ 19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, and ≥ 50 years), or races (Caucasian versus Asian). The daily intake (EDI) of BPS was estimated on the basis of urinary concentrations using a simple pharmacokinetic approach. The median EDI values of BPS in Japan, China, United States, Kuwait, Vietnam, Malaysia, India, and Korea were 1.67, 0.339, 0.316, 0.292, 0.217, 0.122, 0.084, and 0.023 μg/person, respectively. This is the first study to report the occurrence of BPS in human urine.  相似文献

We studied the ability of protein aggregates for loading and protection of α-tocopherol, a model of heat- and light-sensitive bioactive compounds. Aqueous dispersions of whey proteins (4.5 wt.%, pH 6.7) in the absence and presence of α-tocopherol (4 wt.%) were prepared using an ultradisperser (10,000 rpm for 10 min and 65 °C), and then submitted to further high-pressure homogenisation (HPH) at 300 or 1200 bar for 12 cycles. Relative to free-vitamin dispersions, increasing HPH conditions in the presence of vitamin led to higher protein denaturation, more tryptophan quenching and wavelength blue-shift (by 10 nm), in parallel with increased zeta potential values (by −10 mV), particle sizes (by 50%), and newly formed protein dimers, trimers and high molecular weight aggregates. As a result, the degree of vitamin degradation under increasing HPH and long-term storage was shown to decrease from 66% (ultradisper) to 50%, or to 30% (subject to further treatments at 300 or 1200 bar, respectively).  相似文献
