Cortical bone remodeling rates for rib samples from three archaeological populations and a modern autopsy sample were determined using an algorithm developed by Frost (Frost [1987a] Calcif. Tissue Res. 3:211-237). When plotted against the relative antiquities for population samples, histomorphometric variables; i.e., activation frequency (mu rc), net bone formation (netVf,r,t), and mean annual bone formation rate (Vf,r,t), exhibit a concordant trend of increased cortical bone remodeling activity levels over time. Two intensive foraging populations, Windover and Gibson, are similar for all bone remodeling parameters and have the lowest remodeling activity levels among the samples. The more recent Ledders sample, which is reported to practice agricultural subsistence, is consistently intermediate between these and a modern autopsy sample. Although there appear to be differences in bone formation rates among the populations it is concluded that these differences cannot be attributed to differences in bone remodeling rates among the populations, but rather are reflecting different effective ages of adult compacta for their ribs. These findings suggest that the earlier populations, particularly Windsor and Gibson, appear to have reached skeletal maturity at an older age than observed for modern.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of laboratory measurements of relative permeability for two phase flow in partially saturated samples of unconsolidated sands. Relative permeabilities for tap water and air, de-aired water and nitrogen were measured using a steady—state technique. An optimal design for the RLSA (radial line slot array) antenna useful for DBS reception is presented. Classical geometries and structures given in the literature are first used. It is found that in some cases these are not suitable. So, optimization techniques by using the right objective functions have been applied. Two different methods were developed and three antennas were designed. Numerical results and comparisons with other similar antennas give the advantages of our design  相似文献

The authors present the basic philosophy, construction, design features, and test results of a new fault locating system. This fault locating system helps to shorten the time required for restoration of service after the occurrence of a busbar fault in an air-insulated distribution substation. Recent optical and electronic technologies allow the design of a highly accurate and compact fault locating system which consists of optical current detectors using the Faraday effect and a fault locating processor using a digital data processing technique. The fault location is carried out by discriminating between the directions of zero-sequence currents. A fault section detection system that uses optical magnetic field sensors and instantly detects the section in which a ground fault occurred was developed for 66 kV underground multiterminal systems having Y-branch joint boxes. The optical magnetic field sensor, which is based on the Faraday effect in Bi-doped YIG ((BiYbGd)3Fe5O12) having a large Verdet constant, detects cable conductor currents of 0 to 2000 A with high precision with the use of a laminated magnetic ring core of silicon steel plates. Summary form only given. The consequences of dynamic interaction caused by physical contact with objects is discussed. Robotic experience has demonstrated that contact with objects can result in unstable behavior, yet humans contact and manipulate objects with no evidence of contact instability. It is shown that impedance control may be used in a robot or prosthesis to eliminate contact instability. Evidence that a similar approach may be the basis of human motor behavior in comparable tasks is reviewed. A model based on exploitation of apparent neuromuscular impedance is shown to be remarkably competent to reproduce fine details of multi-joint reaching behavior. The implication of this model is that some of the stability properties associated with posture are preserved during movement and may be used to simplify its execution. Experiments in which human subjects held the handle of a manipulandum and performed simple reaching motions to visually presented targets are described  相似文献
