Cytogenetic variants in holoprosencephaly. Report of a case and review of the literature

A new infant with classical features of holoprosencephaly and multiple extracranial malformations was found to have abnormal karyotype: 47, XX, + 13. Although trisomy D has been reported in a few cases, our case is the first, to our knowledge, in which positive identification of trisomy 13 was made by banding technique in cebocephaly.     

Bulling among yearling feedlot steers

The effect of ingestion of 250 ml X-ray contrast medium on resting gastrooesophageal sphincter pressure was studied in 10 normal human subjects. Twenty minutes after initiated intake of the contrast medium, a significant fall in sphincter pressure was recorded. In the light of studies on the neurogenic and hormonal regulation of the sphincter pressure it is attempted to account for this effect, and it is concluded that it must be a manifestation of a reflectory relaxation of the sphincter region. From a clinical point of view the consequence must be a demand for standardized conditions with regard to composition and pH of the contrast medium, time schedule and degree of abdominal compression in those cases in which radiological evaluation of the resistance against reflux is called for.     

Gangrenous pyoderma and IgA-paraproteinemia

A gammaAchi--paraproteinemia was found in a 73 year-old female patient with pyoderma gangraenosum. Since the paraporteins hitherto observed in pyoderma gangraenosum predominantly belong to the IgA class, a relationship may exist between pyoderma gangraenosum and this type of paraproteinemia.     

Synergy between bio‐based industry and the feed industry through biorefinery

Processing biomass into multi‐functional components can contribute to the increasing demand for raw materials for feed and bio‐based non‐food products. This contribution aims to demonstrate synergy between the bio‐based industry and the feed industry through biorefinery of currently used feed ingredients. Illustrating the biorefinery concept, rapeseed was selected as a low priced feed ingredient based on market prices versus crude protein, crude fat and apparent ileal digestible lysine content. In addition it is already used as an alternative protein source in diets and can be cultivated in European climate zones. Furthermore, inclusion level of rapeseed meal in pig diet is limited because of its nutritionally active factors. A conceptual process was developed to improve rapeseeds nutritional value and producing other bio‐based building blocks simultaneously. Based on the correlation between market prices of feed ingredients and its protein and fat content, the value of refined products was estimated. Finally, a sensitivity analysis, under two profit scenario, shows that the process is economically feasible. This study demonstrates that using biorefinery processes on feed ingredients can improve feed quality. In conjunction, it produces building blocks for a bio‐based industry and creates synergy between bio‐based and feed industry for more efficient use of biomass. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry     

Misinterpretation of body sensations in panic disorder

Cognitive accounts of panic predict that panic disorder patients will be particularly prone to misinterpret autonomic sensations. Several studies have produced results consistent with this prediction, but each is open to alternative interpretation. To clarify matters, 2 studies administered the Body Sensations Interpretation Questionnaire (BSIQ) to panic patients and controls. Panic patients were more likely to interpret ambiguous autonomic sensations as signs of immediately impending physical or mental disaster and were more likely than other anxiety disorder patients and nonpatients to believe these interpretations. In a 3rd study, a brief version of the BSIQ was shown to have satisfactory test-retest reliability, to change with treatment, and to discriminate treatments that varied in their effects on panic.     

Synthesis of High Coercivity Core–Shell Nanorods Based on Nickel and Cobalt and Their Magnetic Properties

Hybrid magnetic nanostructures with high coercivity have immense application potential in various fields. Nickel (Ni) electrodeposited inside Cobalt (Co) nanotubes (a new system named Ni @ Co nanorods) were fabricated using a two-step potentiostatic electrodeposition method. Ni @ Co nanorods were crystalline, and they have an average diameter of 150 nm and length of ~15 μm. The X-ray diffraction studies revealed the existence of two separate phases corresponding to Ni and Co. Ni @ Co nanorods exhibited a very high longitudinal coercivity. The general mobility-assisted growth mechanism proposed for the growth of one-dimensional nanostructures inside nano porous alumina during potentiostatic electrodeposition is found to be valid in this case too.
