One of the recent trends in electrocatalytic reactions involves the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), where a new paradigm has been shaped to exploit this reaction for the synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). H2O2 is a very versatile chemical of high commercial value, prepared currently through poorly sustainable processes. The emergence of metal‐free carbon catalysts for the selective synthesis of H2O2 is expected to revolutionize ORR research, beckoning at the development of new industrial schemes. Cells expressing the hemagglutinin protein of influenza virus were fused to planar bilayer membranes containing the fluorescent lipid probes octadecylrhodamine (R18) or indocarbocyanine (DiI) to investigate whether spontaneous curvature of each monolayer of a target membrane affects the growth of fusion pores. R18 and DiI lowered the transition temperatures for formation of an inverted hexagonal phase, indicating that these probes facilitate the formation of negative curvature structures. The probes are known to translocate from one monolayer of a bilayer membrane to the other in a voltage-dependent manner. The spontaneous curvature of the cis monolayer (facing the cells) or the trans monolayer could therefore be made more negative through control of the polarity of voltage across the planar membrane. Electrical admittance measurements showed that the open times of flickering fusion pores were shorter when probes were in trans monolayers and longer when in cis monolayers compared with times when probe was symmetrically distributed. Open times were the same for probe symmetrically distributed as when probes were not present. Thus, open times were a function of the asymmetry of the spontaneous curvature between the trans and cis monolayers. Enriching the cis monolayer with a negative curvature probe reduced the probability that a small pore would fully enlarge, whereas enriching the trans monolayer promoted enlargement. Lysophosphatidylcholine has positive spontaneous curvature and does not translocate. When lysophosphatidylcholine was placed in trans leaflets of planar membranes, closing of fusion pores was rare. The effects of the negative and positive spontaneous curvature probes do not support the hypothesis that a flickering pore closes from an open state within a hemifusion diaphragm (essentially a "flat" structure). Rather, such effects support the hypothesis that the membrane surrounding the open pore forms a three-dimensional hourglass shape from which the pore flickers shut. 相似文献

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are demonstrating great potential to compete with second generation photovoltaics. Nevertheless, the key issue hindering PSCs full exploitation relies on their stability. Among the strategies devised to overcome this problem, the use of carbon nanostructures (CNSs) as hole transporting materials (HTMs) has given impressive results in terms of solar cells stability to moisture, air oxygen, and heat. Here, the use of a HTM based on a poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) matrix doped with organic functionalized single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and reduced graphene oxide in PSCs is proposed to achieve higher power conversion efficiencies (η = 11% and 7.3%, respectively) and prolonged shelf‐life stabilities (480 h) in comparison with a benchmark PSC fabricated with a bare P3HT HTM (η = 4.3% at 480 h). Further endurance test, i.e., up to 3240 h, has shown the failure of all the PSCs based on undoped P3HT, while, on the contrary, a η of ≈8.7% is still detected from devices containing 2 wt% SWCNT‐doped P3HT as HTM. The increase in photovoltaic performances and stabilities of the P3HT‐CNS‐based solar cell, with respect to the standard P3HT‐based one, is attributed to the improved interfacial contacts between the doped HTM and the adjacent layers. 相似文献

We recently demonstrated that pretreatment with N-(2-chloroethyl)-N-ethyl-2-bromobenzylamine (DSP-4) exacerbates experimental parkinsonism induced by methamphetamine. The mechanism responsible for this effect remains to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated whether the exacerbation of chronic dopamine loss in DSP-4-pretreated animals is due to an impairment in the recovery of dopamine levels once the neurotoxic insult is generated or to an increased efficacy of the effects induced by methamphetamine. We administered different doses of methamphetamine either to DSP-4-pretreated or to intact Swiss-Webster mice and evaluated the methamphetamine-induced striatal dopamine loss at early and prolonged intervals. As a further step, we evaluated the striatal pharmacokinetics of methamphetamine, together with its early biochemical effects. We found that previous damage to norepinephrine terminals produced by DSP-4 did not modify the recovery of striatal dopamine levels occurring during several weeks after methamphetamine. By contrast, pretreatment with DSP-4 exacerbated early biochemical effects of methamphetamine, which were already detectable 1 h after methamphetamine administration. In addition, in norepinephrine-depleted animals, the clearance of striatal methamphetamine is prolonged, although the striatal concentration peak observed at 1 h is unmodified. These findings, together with the lack of a methamphetamine enhancement when DSP-4 was injected 12 h after methamphetamine administration, suggest that in norepinephrine-depleted animals, a more pronounced acute neuronal sensitivity to methamphetamine occurs. 相似文献

Carbon nanotubes are emerging as innovative tools in nanobiotechnology. However, their toxic effects on environment and health have become an issue of strong concern. In the present study, we address the impact of functionalized carbon nanotubes (f-CNTs) on cells of the immune system. We have prepared two types of f-CNTs, following the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction (f-CNTs 1 and 2) and the oxidation/amidation treatment (f-CNTs 3 and 4), respectively. We have found that both types of f-CNTs are uptaken by B and T lymphocytes as well as macrophages in vitro, without affecting cell viability. Subsequently, the functionality of the different cells was analyzed carefully. We discovered that f-CNT 1, which is highly water soluble, did not influence the functional activity of immunoregulatory cells. f-CNT 3, which instead possesses reduced solubility and forms mainly stable water suspensions, preserved lymphocytes' functionality while provoking secretion of proinflammatory cytokines by macrophages. 相似文献

Understanding and controlling the chemical reactivity of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a fundamental requisite to prepare novel nanoscopic structures with practical uses in materials applications. Here, we present a comprehensive microscopic and spectroscopic characterization of carbon nanotubes which have been chemically modified. Specifically, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) investigations of short-oxidized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) functionalized with aliphatic chains via amide reaction reveal the presence of bright lumps both on the sidewalls and at the tips. The functionalization pattern is consistent with the oxidation reaction which mainly occurs at the nanotube tips. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), steady-state electronic absorption (UV-vis-NIR), and Raman spectroscopic studies confirm the STM observations. 相似文献
