Bartlett Corrections for Unit Root Test Statistics

Bartlett corrections of the log likelihood ratio test for a unit root in an AR(1) process, as well as for some asymptotically equivalent tests, are studied. The corrections are obtained by an analytical method. The numerical performance of the results is checked in a simulation study.     

Building micro and nanosystems with electrochemical discharges

Since the discovery of the electrochemical discharge phenomenon by Fizeau and Foucault, several contributions have expanded the wide range of applications associated with this high current density electrochemical process. The complexity of the phenomenon, from the macroscopic to the microscopic scales, led since then to experimental and theoretical studies from different research fields. This contribution reviews the chemical and electrochemical perspectives where a mechanistic model based on results from radiation chemistry of aqueous solutions is proposed. In addition applications to micro-machining and fabrication of nanoparticles are discussed.     

Application of microfiltration to egg white depleted in ovomucin

Summary An attempt was made to reduce the microbial load of unpasteurized fresh egg white by using cross-flow microfiltration and a Tetra-Laval bactocatch installation. Cross-flow tangential microfiltration of liquid fresh egg white was not feasible as there was irreversible membrane clogging within a few minutes of operation. As membrane clogging could have been caused by ovomucin, this protein was removed from whole fresh egg white by increasing the salt strength and lowering the pH. Ovomucin-depleted egg white (ODEW) was successfully microfiltered on the same membrane. Compared to fresh egg white, ODEW had lower foaming and viscous properties, and these properties remained unchanged after bactofiltration. The reduction of microbial load was, however, relatively low.     

Detection of Pinosylvins in Solid Wood of Scots Pine Using Fourier Transform Raman and Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract

Diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared (DRIFT) and near infrared (NIR) FT-Raman spectroscopy were used to detect pinosylvins in the wood of Pinus sylvestris L. trees. NIR FT-Raman spectroscopy offered the possibility of revealing pinosylvins simply by visual inspection of Raman spectra whereas DRIFT spectra needed a more complicated evaluation. Pinosylvin and resin acids from Scots pine were examined as to the possibility of their being the cause of observed spectral differences between sapwood and heartwood. Since pinosylvins are important compounds for the decay resistance of Scots pine wood, the detection of pinosylvins with Raman spectroscopy might be used to assess durability of wood products.     

Serious conduct problems in the children of adolescent mothers: Disentangling confounded correlations.

Early motherhood (r?=?.33) with the number of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) symptoms of conduct disorder in a sample of 253 boys (aged 6–13 yrs) who had been referred to outpatient clinics. The following models were compared using path analysis: (1) Teenage motherhood, parental antisocial personality, and socioeconomic status (SES) each contribute uniquely to the prediction of childhood conduct problems; (2) teenage motherhood mediates the association of SES and parental antisocial personality with child conduct problems; and (3) teenage motherhood is spuriously related with child conduct problems because of common associations with SES and parental antisocial personality. Model (3) best fit the data. Similar results were obtained whether maternal age at the birth of the firstborn child or the proband child was used to define maternal age and when teenage motherhood was defined as giving birth at     

A reappraisal of Wundt's influence on social psychology.

Discusses the social psychology of Wundt and its link to current developments in the constructionist movement in modern psychology. The historical lines of descent from Wundt's experimental psychology to American behaviorist social psychology are traced, and the relationship between Wundt's (1911) Volkerpsychologie to the social scientists who kept alive Wundt's social psychological orientation and who figure as antecedents of postmodern constructionism is delineated. With historical hindsight, the behaviorist program for social psychology may now be seen as an aberrant detour around the fundamental questions of social psychology.
