Critical Behavior in the Low-Energy Spin Fluctuations in High-Tc Superconductors

We study the spin fluctuations of pure and Zn-substituted La_{2 – x} Sr _x CuO₄ using the muon spin relaxation technique. Superconductivity is found to coexist with low-frequency spin fluctuations over a large region of the superconducting phase diagram. The characteristic temperature of spin fluctuations detected by SR decreases with increasing x and vanishes above a critical doping x _c 0.19. This value of x _c coincides with the doping at which the normal state pseudogap extrapolates to zero. These results are discussed in terms of a quantum transition that separates the superconducting phase diagram of high-temperature superconductors into two distinct ground states.     

Gel protein capillary extraction apparatus. electronic protein transfer

A gel protein capillary extraction apparatus is developed and demonstrated for its rapid and effective transfer of SDS-protein complexes from polyacrylamide gel to a fused-silica capillary. The small dimensions of capillary columns permit the application of high voltages for achieving rapid and effective transfer of gel proteins. Furthermore, the fused-silica capillaries are internally coated with polyacrylamide for the elimination of electroosmotic pumping and protein adsorption onto the capillary wall. The extracted proteins are present in a highly concentrated solution plug as the result of field amplification and sample stacking during the extraction process. Three model proteins, including cytochrome c (14 kDa), ovalbumin (45 kDa), and beta-galactosidase (116 kDa), are visualized using coomassie blue staining and electrophoretically extracted from the gels with protein loading as low as 50 ng. The SDS-cytochrome c complexes extracted from a 50-ng protein loading are concentrated in a 30-nL solution plug inside the capillary with an estimated concentration of 0. 1 mg/mL or 10(-5) M. The capillary format allows the straightforward integration of a miniaturized trypsin-membrane reactor for on-line proteolytic digestion and ESI-MS analysis for protein/peptide identification.     

Ionization and fragmentation of humic substances in electrospray ionization Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry

Electrospray ionization (ESI) was combined with ultra-high-resolution Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS) to characterize complex humic and fulvic acid mixtures. Lower than expected molecular weight distributions previously observed for humics when analyzed by ESI-MS have fueled speculation about a bias in favor of low molecular weight. Multiply charged ions, ionization suppression, and sample fragmentation have all been suggested as sources of this low molecular weight bias. In this work, resolution of the individual components of humic mixtures within a 1 mass-to-charge unit window was accomplished by FTICR MS at 9.4 T. At mass resolving powers between 60,000 (high mass) and 120,000 (low mass), it was possible to determine that virtually all ions present in spectra of Suwannee River fulvic and humic acid are singly charged, thus eliminating inadequate accounting for multiply charged ions as a primary source of any low molecular weight bias. The high-resolution mass spectra also revealed the presence of molecular families containing ions that differ from each other in degree of saturation, functional group substitution (primarily CH vs N and CH4 vs O), and number of CH2 groups. Ionization suppression and ion fragmentation were addressed for humic and fulvic acid mixtures and well-characterized poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) mixtures with average molecular weights of 8000 and 10,000. Although these high molecular weight PEG mixtures fragment extensively under traditional positive-ion mode ESI conditions, similar fragmentation could not be confirmed for humic and fulvic acid mixtures.     

Changing toddlers' and preschoolers' attachment classifications: The circle of security intervention.

The Circle of Security intervention uses a group treatment modality to provide parent education and psychotherapy that is based on attachment theory. The purpose of this study was to track changes in children's attachment classifications pre- and immediately postintervention. Participants were 65 toddler- or preschooler- caregiver dyads recruited from Head Start and Early Head Start programs. As predicted, there were significant within-subject changes from disorganized to organized attachment classifications, with a majority changing to the secure classification. In addition, only 1 of the 13 preintervention securely attached children shifted to an insecure classification. Results suggest that the Circle of Security protocol is a promising intervention for the reduction of disorganized and insecure attachment in high-risk toddlers and preschoolers. Last clock

The Last clock displays a space's history and rhythm. Trails behind its hands paint the clock face with a video feed, creating a mandala of archived time. The Last clock began as an investigation into representations of time. The goal was to use the mutable properties of digital technology, hoping to create something aesthetically pleasing, interesting, and ever changing without having to succumb to randomness. The clock reveals the rhythm of events and spaces. It provides a record of and a means of reflection for what is happening and what has happened. With the Internet-connected streaming version, the clock can connect two or more remote spaces so that people feel a sense of each other's presence. The clock does not show precisely the activity in the space, just a filtered version of it. Beyond being an aesthetic object, Last serves a real purpose as a display that shows an overview of a given space's dynamics and history. By borrowing the form of a traditional analog clock, Last becomes an easy-to-read visualization of complex information, which includes the type of activity captured, the pace and volume of motion, and the point in time that this activity happened. it shows all this information in a continuously updated, live, single image. Bringing forth worlds

Kress encourages us to understand writing as “transformative engagement in the world,” and his emphasis on the materiality of modes draws our attention to the multiple possibilities offered by different materials and sensory channels. Writing involves the transformation of all aspects of the resources for meaning; thus writing is always an ethical act, and the worlds that different cultures and communities bring forth through their semiotic work offer different possibilities of being.     

Development and Application of a Phosphorus Model for a Shallow Oxbow Lake

A three-dimensional numerical model was developed for simulating the phosphorus concentration in shallow lakes. In this model, the computational domain was divided into two parts: the water column and the bed sediment layer. The processes of mineralization, settling, adsorption, desorption, bed release (diffusion), growth, and death of phytoplankton were taken into account, and the concentration of organic phosphorus, phosphate, and related water quality constituents was simulated. The concentrations of adsorbed (particulate) and dissolved phosphate due to adsorption-desorption were calculated using two formulas derived based on the Langmuir equation. The release rate of phosphorus from the bed sediment layer was calculated by considering the effects of the concentration gradient across the water-sediment interface, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration, and flow conditions. The adsorption and desorption of phosphate from sediment particles, as well as its release from bed sediment, were verified using laboratory experimental data. The model was calibrated and applied to Deep Hollow Lake in the Mississippi alluvial plain. The simulated trends and magnitudes of phosphorus concentration were compared with field observations. The simulation results show that there are strong interactions between sediment-related processes and phosphorus concentration.     

Driving on Mars with RSVP

The rover sequencing and visualization program (RSVP) suite of tools has been a critical factor in the success of the Mars exploration rover (MER) missions. It would be impossible to prepare the large command loads each sol without the capabilities that it possesses. It has proven to be robust and easy to use and capable of answering key questions about sequence validity and constraints. Certainly, training is required to use RSVP, but this is primarily in the general area of command sequencing and rover operations. Once these concepts are understood, RSVP feels natural for building sequences. RSVP has met its prime requirements of supporting rapid assimilation and understanding of the terrain and operational constraints, rapid sequence generation and validation, and production of documentation and archival products. This can be seen in the very limited number of sols lost due to errors in the command sequences. The success of the MER mission and the tremendous amount of science data collected attest to the capability of RSVP.     

The digital divide: the special case of gender

Abstract This paper examines the evidence for the digital divide based on gender. An overview of research published in the last 20 years draws to the conclusion that females are at a disadvantage relative to men when learning about computers or learning other material with the aid of computer-assisted software. The evidence shows that the digital divide affects people of all ages and across international boundaries. We suggest that the digital divide is fundamentally a problem of computer anxiety whose roots are deep in socialization patterns of boys and girls and that interact with the stereotype of computers as toys for boys. A model of the digital divide is presented that examines gender stereotypes, attribution patterns, and stereotype threat as antecedents of computer anxiety. Computer anxiety in turn leads to differences in computer attitudes and computer performance. A number of suggestions are offered to reduce the impact of the digital divide.     

Integrating visual goal models into the Rational Unified Process

The Rational Unified Process is a comprehensive process model that is tailorable, provides templates for the software engineering products, and integrates the use of the Unified Modeling Language (UML); it is rapidly becoming a de facto standard for developing software. The process supports the definition of requirements at multiple levels. Currently, the early requirements, or goals, are captured in a textual document called the Vision Document, as the UML does not include a goal modeling diagram. The goals are subsequently refined into software requirements, captured in UML Use Case Diagrams. Given the well documented advantages of visual modeling techniques in requirements engineering, including the efficient communication and understanding of complex information among numerous diverse stakeholders, the need for an enhanced version of the Vision Document template which supports the visual modeling of goals is identified. Here, an Enhanced Vision Document is proposed which integrates two existing visual goal models: AND/OR Graph for functional goals and Softgoal Interdependency Graph for non-functional goals. A specific approach to establishing traceability relationships from the goals to the Use Cases is presented. Tool support has been developed for the Enhanced Vision Document template; the approach is illustrated using an example system called the Quality Assurance Review Assistant Tool.
