A very large format neural stimulator device, to be used in future retinal prosthesis experiments, has been designed, fabricated, and tested. The device was designed to be positioned against a human retina for short periods in an operating room environment. Demonstrating a very large format, parallel interface between a 2-D microelectronic stimulator array and neural tissue would be an important step in proving the feasibility of high resolution retinal prosthesis for the blind. The architecture of the test device combines several novel components, including microwire glass, a microelectronic multiplexer, and a microcable connector. The array format is 80 times 40 array pixels with approximately 20 microwire electrodes per pixel. The custom assembly techniques involve indium bump bonding, ribbon bonding, and encapsulation. The design, fabrication, and testing of the device has resolved several important issues regarding the feasibility of high-resolution retinal prosthesis, namely, that the combination of conventional CMOS electronics and microwire glass provides a viable approach for a high resolution retinal prosthesis device. Temperature change from power dissipation within the device and maximum electrical output current levels suggest that the device is acceptable for acute human tests  相似文献

One of the primary goals of the US Geological Survey (USGS) Laboratory in Lawrence, Kansas, is to develop analytical methods for the analysis of herbicide metabolites in surface and ground water that are vital to the study of herbicide fate and degradation pathways in the environment. Methods to measure metabolite concentrations from three major classes of herbicides--triazine, chloroacetanilide and phenyl-urea--have been developed. Methods for triazine metabolite detection cover nine compounds: six compounds are detected by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry; one is detected by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection; and eight are detected by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Two metabolites of the chloroacetanilide herbicides--ethane sulfonic acid and oxanilic acid--are detected by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Alachlor ethane sulfonic acid also has been detected by solid-phase extraction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Six phenylurea metabolites are all detected by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry; four of the six metabolites also are detected by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Additionally, surveys of herbicides and their metabolites in surface water, ground water, lakes, reservoirs, and rainfall have been conducted through the USGS laboratory in Lawrence. These surveys have been useful in determining herbicide and metabolite occurrence and temporal distribution and have shown that metabolites may be useful in evaluation of non-point-source contamination.  相似文献

Low-cost compact sensors for ultrasmall systems are a pressing need in many new applications. One potential solution is a shallow aspect ratio system using a lenslet array to form multiple undersampled subimages of a scene on a single focal plane array, where processing techniques then produce an upsampled restored image. We have investigated the optimization and theoretical limits of the performance of such arrays. We have built a hardware simulator and developed algorithms to process imagery similar to that of a full lenslet imaging sensor, which allowed us to quickly test optical components, algorithms, and complete system designs for future lenslet imaging systems.  相似文献

Water samples were collected from Midwestern streams in 1994-1995 and 1998 as part of a study to help determine if changes in herbicide use resulted in changes in herbicide concentrations since a previous reconnaissance study in 1989-1990. Sites were sampled during the first significant runoff period after the application of pre-emergent herbicides in 1989-1990, 1994-1995, and 1998. Samples were analyzed for selected herbicides, two atrazine metabolites, three cyanazine metabolites, and one alachlor metabolite. In the Midwestern USA, alachlor use was much greater in 1989 than in 1995, whereas acetochlor was not used in 1989 but was commonly used in 1995. The use of atrazine, cyanazine, and metolachlor was approximately the same in 1989 and 1995. The median concentrations of atrazine, alachlor, cyanazine, and metolachlor were substantially higher in 1989-1990 than in 1994-1995 or 1998. The median acetochlor concentration was higher in 1998 than in 1994 or 1995.  相似文献

Bio‐inspired optical systems have the potential to transform the process of image collection and analysis in the future. Through simplicity and dynamics these collection systems may provide multiple functions with an excellent level of reliability. From the graded index of the fish‐eye to the hyper‐acuity of the compound eye, nature has provided function with amazing simplicity. This article reviews a select number of biological vision systems and the unique material behaviors that rise to these characteristics. We introduce the materials chemistry and morphological complexity that enables the biological system behavior.  相似文献

The Lake Michigan brown trout (Salmo trutta) fishery is sustained by the stocking of five hatchery strains by four state natural resource agencies. In the absence of exhaustive marking programs, strain-specific measures of stocking success are lacking for brown trout in Lake Michigan. We used microsatellite-based genetic assignment testing and genetic stock identification (GSI) to determine the strain of 122 angler-caught brown trout from four northeastern Lake Michigan ports. We compared strain composition estimates for sportfishing harvest to expected proportions of each brown trout strain in Lake Michigan at the time of harvest using stocking records corrected for age-specific mortality rates. Reassignment rates of individuals from baseline strains averaged 92.1% (range: 84.1–98.0%). Assignment testing and GSI analyses consistently found Wild Rose strain brown trout represented approximately 89% of the northeastern Lake Michigan sportfishing harvest, while only comprising 43.8% of the expected stock. Of the Michigan angler harvest of Wild Rose strain brown trout, approximately half were estimated to have originated from Wisconsin hatcheries, demonstrating a propensity for lake-wide movements. Continued assessments will improve understanding of strain relative contributions to angler harvests that can direct future stocking efforts.  相似文献

Isoxaflutole (IXF), a newer low application rate herbicide, was introduced for weed control in corn (Zea mays) to use as an alternative to widely applied herbicides such as atrazine. The transport of IXF in streamwater has not been well-studied. The fate and transport of IXF and two of its degradation products was studied in 10 Iowa rivers during 2004. IXF rapidly degrades to the herbicidally active diketonitrile (DKN), which degrades to a biologically inactive benzoic acid (BA) analogue. IXF was detected in only four, DKN in 56, and BA in 43 of 75 samples. The concentrations of DKN and BA were approximately 2 orders of magnitude less than those of the commonly detected triazine and acetamide herbicides and their degradation products. Concentrations of IXF, DKN, and BA were highest during the May through June postplanting period. The concentration ratio of BA/DKN was similar to the deethylatrazine/atrazine ratio with smaller ratios occurring during May and June. The relative temporal variation of DKN and BA was similar to that observed for atrazine and deethylatrazine. This study shows that low application rate herbicides can have similar temporal transport patterns in streamwater as compared to more widely applied herbicides but at lower concentrations.  相似文献

Genetic differentiation among brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) of different life history forms and populations can result from reproductive isolation imposed by natural or anthropogenically derived barriers to gene flow, behavioral incompatibilities, or differential exposure to environmental cues. We used multi-locus microsatellite genotypes and likelihood and Bayesian-based analyses to characterize the degree of genetic differentiation and evidence of introgression among stream resident brook trout above a natural barrier, and putative stream residents and adfluvial (coaster) brook trout from below the barrier in the Salmon Trout River (STR); the sole tributary along the southern shore of Lake Superior known to be inhabited by a viable remnant population of coaster brook trout. Two genetically differentiated populations were identified, generally associated with individuals inhabiting sections of the STR above and below the falls. No evidence of differentiation was found between a priori classified resident and coaster brook trout from below the falls. Gene flow from individuals above the falls was detected based on evidence of interbreeding between upper river individuals and coasters below the falls. We collected only a relatively small number of individuals that we a priori classified as being stream residents below the falls, and these individuals had a high probability of having ancestry originating from the population above the barrier, which suggests that the stream-resident life history may be exceptionally rare or absent in the lower Salmon Trout River.  相似文献

The ability of fishery managers to quickly and effectively answer stakeholder questions using the best available science is crucial for successful management. The 2009 capture of a potential world record brown trout (Salmo trutta) and the 2010 capture of a potential world record land-locked Atlantic salmon (S. salar) in Michigan required managers to acquire genetic verification of the species identity. Given the variety of hatchery strains used to maintain Great Lakes fisheries for brown trout and in the absence of physical markings, managers also were interested to determine the strain of origin for information on assessing performance. DNA barcoding techniques using sequences from the mitochondrial (mt) DNA cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene and frequency-based analysis of species-specific microsatellite genotypes provided data to establish the species of both fish. The putative brown trout was confirmed to be a new world record specimen. Using individual assignment tests based on maximum likelihood estimators informed by multi-locus microsatellite genotypes, we determined the fish to be from the Seeforellen hatchery strain (p < 0.01). Analysis of the COI gene in the putative Atlantic salmon resulted in assignment as a brown trout. The presence of only brown trout alleles at all six microsatellite loci examined revealed that the individual was not an inter-specific hybrid. Given sufficient genetic divergence exists among species, populations, or hatchery strains, the combination of mtDNA barcoding and microsatellite genetic analysis can provide accurate and rapid identification to address stakeholder and management questions.  相似文献
