Interlook cross-correlation function of speckle in SAR images of sea surface processed with partially overlapped subapertures

In the present paper, a general integral expression is derived and discussed for the cross-correlation function (CCF) of speckle patterns in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images processed by using partially overlapped subapertures of arbitrary Doppler center frequencies (or equivalent azimuth times). It is shown that, under the white noise approximation for the backscattered field, the CCF of the interlook speckle intensity patterns is given by the squared modulus of the autocorrelation function of the amplitude weighting function of subapertures where the time lag is the center time difference. It is also shown that the CCF of the interlook speckle patterns is independent of the surface coherence time of sea surface. The integral expression for the intensity CCF is then evaluated for a rectangular weighting function, and comparison is made with Japanese Earth Resources Satellite-1 (JERS-1) L-band and RADARSAT-1 C-band SAR images of sea surface to test the theory. The CCFs computed from the JERS-1 SAR data show excellent agreement with the theory, and good agreement is obtained with the RADARSAT-1 data.     

Effects of thyroid hormone replacement therapy on nocturnal apnea in elderly patients with hypothyroidism

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Dieulafoy's disease is a rare cause of upper gastrointestinal tract hemorrhage. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of endoscopic hemostasis and to analyze the mortality of patients with hemorrhage due to Dieulafoy's disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The retrospective analysis included patients from our institution who had undergone urgent endoscopic examination of the upper digestive tract and hemostatic interventions in the period between January 1994 and December 1996. RESULTS: Twenty-five patients were examined (18 men and 7 women, average age 52.6, SD+/-15.3, range 25-78). In 20 patients endoscopic injection sclerotherapy was performed (diluted epinephrine 1:10,000 plus polidocanol 1%) and Nd:YAG laser photocoagulation in five patients. In all patients a total of 44 interventional endoscopies were carried out. Repeated endoscopic hemostasis did not prove successful in two patients (8%, 2 men), and they were treated operatively. During the postoperative period one patient died because of multiorgan failure. The total mortality rate of all patients in which endoscopic hemostasis was done was 16% (4/25). None of the 21 surviving patients had rebleeding on long-term follow-up (mean: 29.4 months). CONCLUSIONS: Endoscopic hemostasis is a major therapeutic advance in the management of Dieulafoy's disease hemorrhage. Interventional endoscopy has decreased the need for surgical management and significantly reduced mortality.     

Downstream of Crk adaptor signaling pathway: activation of Jun kinase by v-Crk through the guanine nucleotide exchange protein C3G

Crk, which belongs to the adaptor family of proteins composed of Src homology 2 (SH2) and SH3 domains, has a putative role in signaling. However, the downstream events of Crk signaling remain unclear. In this study, we found that Jun kinase (JNK) is moderately activated by v-Crk in both NIH 3T3 cells and chicken embryo fibroblasts. Transient expression of v-Crk, c-Crk-I, or c-Crk-II activated JNK1 in human embryo kidney cells, 293T. Coexpression of a guanine nucleotide exchange protein C3G, which specifically binds to Crk's SH3 domain, further enhanced the JNK activity as well as growth rate and anchorage-independent growth of v-Crk NIH 3T3 cells. Furthermore, overexpression of a dominant-negative form of C3G lacking the guanine nucleotide exchange domain abolished both the JNK activity and the colony forming potential of v-Crk NIH 3T3 cells. The requirement for JNK activation in v-Crk induced transformation was demonstrated by the suppression of colony forming activity of v-Crk NIH 3T3 cells when a dominant-negative form of JNK kinase, Sek1/MKK4 is expressed in these cells. These data strongly suggest the existence of a novel signaling cascade involving an adaptor protein v-Crk, which transmits signals through C3G toward JNK activation.     

Polycrystal isolation of InGaP/GaAs HBTs to reduce collectorcapacitance

InGaP/GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) with polycrystalline GaAs buried under the base electrode have been fabricated using low-temperature gas-source molecular beam epitaxy on SiO₂-patterned substrates. A cutoff frequency of 120 GHz and a maximum oscillation frequency of 230 GHz were obtained for three parallel 0.7×8.5 μm HBTs. Compared to HBTs without the polycrystal, the collector capacitance was reduced by 28% and the maximum stable gain was improved by 1.2 dB due to complete carrier depletion in the polycrystal under the base electrode. These results show the high potential of the proposed HBTs for high-speed digital and broadband-amplifier applications     

Randomized prospective trial of gentian violet with dibutyryl cAMP and povidone-iodine with sugar as treatment for pressure sores infected with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in elderly patients

A randomized prospective study was done to evaluate the two treatments for pressure sores infected with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in elderly patients: Gentian violet plus dibutyryl cAMP (GVcAMP, n = 8) and povidone-iodine plus sugar (IS, n = 11). Age, underlying diseases, and nutritional status did not differ between the two groups. Specimens were obtained biweekly from the pressure sores and were cultured. The percentage of culture dishes with no methicillin-resistant S. aureus was 93% for the patients given GVcAMP, but only 74% for those given IS (p < 0.01). By the 14th week after the start of treatment, the mean area of the pressure sores in the GVcAMP group had decreased to 45% of the area at the start of treatment. In the IS group, the decrease was smaller to 56% of the area before treatment. No local or systemic adverse effects occurred in either group. GVcAMP is useful to treat pressure sores infected with methicillin-resistant S. aureus.     

Chemical interaction between granular B4C and 304L-type stainless steel materials used in BWRs in Japan

Chemical reactions between stainless steel and boron carbide were investigated using the materials applied for control rods in BWRs in Japan, specifically 304L-type stainless steel and granular boron carbide. The reaction region consisted of 2–4 layers, in which the significant composition variation of each element was detected, especially for B and C. Assuming that the reaction layer growth obeys the parabolic law, the effective rate constant between 304L-type stainless steel and granular boron carbide was evaluated to be approximately one order of magnitude smaller than the previously reported values for boron carbide pellets or powers. This difference might originate from the loose contact between the stainless steel and the granular boron carbide in the present study. Regarding liquefaction progress, the stainless steel components were selectively dissolved in the melt; consequently, the unreacted boron carbide tended to remain.     

Successful weaning from mechanical ventilation in an aged subject with severe apneas due to brain damage

A 73-year-old male was admitted to Tokyo University Hospital due to cardiac arrest secondary to ventricular arrhythmias. Although the patient survived after cardiopulmonary resuscitation, he needed mechanical ventilation. When we tried to wean the patient from mechanical ventilation, we found that he suffered from frequent sleep apneas of over 40 times/hour. To evaluate the severity and frequency of the apneas, we performed polysomnographic study on the patient under assist ventilation. The polysomnographic study revealed that frequency of apneas was very high but the magnitude of desaturation was not so severe during the night. Since we confirmed the lowest SaO2 in this patients was over 90% during day and night, we tried to wean from the patient from the ventilator again and succeeded. The clinical application and usefulness of nocturnal ventilatory monitoring for patients with mechanical ventilation was discussed.
