The use of support vector machines (SVMs) for predicting the location and time of tornadoes is presented. In this paper, we extend the work by Lakshmanan et al. (Proceedings of 2005 IEEE international joint conference on neural networks (Montreal, Canada), 3, 2005a, 1642–1647) to use a set of 33 storm days and introduce some variations that improve the results. The goal is to estimate the probability of a tornado event at a particular spatial location within a given time window. We utilize a least-squares methodology to estimate shear, quality control of radar reflectivity, morphological image processing to estimate gradients, fuzzy logic to generate compact measures of tornado possibility and SVM classification to generate the final spatiotemporal probability field. On the independent test set, this method achieves a Heidke's skill score of 0.60 and a critical success index of 0.45. 相似文献
The paper discusses the aspects of repair and retrofitting technique adopted for a damaged reinforced concrete beam-column joint specimen under cyclic loading. A specimen designed based on Indian Standard specifications with consideration of seismic load but without adopting ductile detailing (NonDuctile) was investigated under reverse cyclic loading. Then, the damaged nonductile specimen was repaired with epoxy mortar and grouted using low viscous polymer, and retrofitted using fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) wrapping in beam and column components and steel plate jacketing in joint region. The experimental results showed that the retrofitted specimen not only regained its original strength and stiffness but also has overcome the deficiencies of nonductile detailing. The present study shows that a proper repair and adequate retrofitting technique can be used for strengthening and improvement of damaged regions in reinforced concrete structures. 相似文献
This article describes a thermal stress boundary element analysis which was carried out to select a mechanical device that would innovate the frit salvage of cathode ray tubes (CRT). The panel and funnel of a CRT are fritted at the seal edge. To reuse a CRT, the panel and funnel are separated by etching and then applied a thermal shock. This procedure is known as frit salvage. Current yield of the frit salvage success rate is about 61 %, which means that 39% of the components are lost and cannot be reused. The financial burden can be reduced if the salvage rate is improved through a better understanding of the thermal shock mechanism.
During thermal shock, a crack was observed to initiate at the end of the axes and traverses towards the corner along the seal end. A CRT is lost when the crack travels along the diagonal corner. A thermal stress analysis was carried out using the boundary element method. The analysis determined that maximum stresses are located near the blend radius on the panel skirt at approximately 1–2 inches on either side of the diagonal. Also it was found that the stresses along the frit seal edge are uniform from the end of the major and minor axes towards the diagonal. The stresses at the diagonal location were reduced by approximately 29%. The direction and location of the crack obtained by the boundary element anlysis were consistent with those observed in the frit salvage procedure.
The crack's promoter along the seal edge is used to protect thermal shock on the outer face panel near the heel radius in order to prevent thermal failure on the diagonal corner. The resultant stresses' directions through the crack's promoter have two holds. The directions of the dominant high stresses at the seal edge through the crack's promoter were changed perpendicular to the seal edge. Therefore, it induces the crack to follow along the seal edge. Secondly, the stresses' directions on a diagonal corner have also been changed to be perpendicular to the seal edge. Consequently, this will prevent the crack along the seal edge from propagating to the diagonal corner, as the crack will advance normally to the maximum principal stress. The crack continues to traverse along the dominant high stress lines at the seal edge as required for a successful frit salvage process. This application is an excellent example of the advantages of using the boundary element method in an industrial setting. 相似文献
The rapid accumulation of the p53 gene product is considered to be an important component of the cellular response to a variety of genotoxins. In order to gain insights on the biochemical pathways leading to p53 stabilization, the effect of (+/-) 7,8-dihydroxy-anti-9, 10-epoxy-7,8,9,10-tetrahydrobenzo(a)-pyrene [(+/-)-anti-BPDE] induced DNA damage on p53 protein levels was investigated in various repair-proficient and repair-deficient human cells. Brief exposure of normal human fibroblasts to 0.05-1 microM (+/-)-anti-BPDE resulted in elevated p53 protein levels as compared to the constitutive levels of control cells. The rapid induction response, detectable within a few hours, was sustained up to a period of at least 24 h. Repair-proficient and repair-deficient (XPA) human lymphoblastoid cells showed a similar response. The poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitor, 3-aminobenzamide (3-AB), diminished the p53 induction response by concomitantly decreasing the extent of (+/-)-anti-BPDE induced DNA damage in cells pretreated with the inhibitor. However, the direct involvement of poly ADP-ribosylation was also apparent as 3-AB was able to attenuate (approximately 50%) the p53 response by post-damage inhibitor treatment of the cells. Inhibition of cellular DNA replication by hydroxyurea and AraC, in the presence or absence of DNA damage, also resulted in rapid p53 accumulation in repair-deficient cells. On the contrary, inhibition of protein kinase C (PKC) by calphostin-C led to an abrogation of (+/-)-anti-BPDE mediated p53 induction. Analysis of the downstream effects of carcinogen treatment showed that the lymphoblastoid cells undergo DNA fragmentation indicative of apoptosis while fibroblasts exhibit cell cycle arrest at the G1-S boundary. 相似文献
An adaptive segmentation algorithm is developed which simultaneously estimates the parameters of the underlying Gibbs random field (GRF)and segments the noisy image corrupted by additive independent Gaussian noise. The algorithm, which aims at obtaining the maximum a posteriori (MAP) segmentation is a simulated annealing algorithm that is interrupted at regular intervals for estimating the GRF parameters. Maximum-likelihood (ML) estimates of the parameters based on the current segmentation are used to obtain the next segmentation. It is proven that the parameter estimates and the segmentations converge in distribution to the ML estimate of the parameters and the MAP segmentation with those parameter estimates, respectively. Due to computational difficulties, however, only an approximate version of the algorithm is implemented. A 32-year-old man with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) admitted to the hospital for treatment of visceral leishmaniasis was inadvertently given 10 times the prescribed first dose of sodium stibogluconate ([Sb] 6.5 g instead of 0.65 g). He experienced no immediate major toxicity during the first 48 hours, but a significant rise of pancreatic enzyme activities was observed (amylase at 10 times the upper limit of normal, lipase at 50 times the upper limit of normal) without clinical signs or indications on computed tomography (CT) of pancreatitis. The third day after the overdose, he developed appendicitis, which appeared coincidental; he recovered uneventfully from surgery. Most of the overdose of Sb was eliminated within the first few hours. Pharmacokinetics remained linear; the rapid, long elimination half-lives (2.7 hours and 54 hours, respectively) were similar to those in previously published results. The administration of a chelating agent, dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), 72 hours after the Sb overdose did not modify the pharmacokinetics of the medication. 相似文献
The present study was carried out to evaluate the effects of ozone on rice grains for the following three conditions: saturation time, decay rate, and half-life of ozone. Experiments were performed in different bed thicknesses (5 and 10 cm) and moisture content (11.4 and 14.2% wb) at atmospheric conditions. The lowest saturation time of ozone was 119 min, with the concentration of 516 ppm for rice grains ozonated at 5-cm bed thickness with 11.4% (wb) moisture content. The decay rate kinetics of ozone obtained were consistent with a first-order model. Regarding the half-life of ozone, the lowest value obtained was 6.78 min for rice grains ozonated at 10-cm bed thickness with 14.2% (wb) moisture content. 相似文献
This study was carried out to evaluate the reaction kinetics of ozone gas in different height (5 and 10 cm), moisture content (10.6 and 13.4% (d.b.)) and gas flow rate (2 and 4 L/min). The decomposition kinetics obtained was first-order model. As far as the half-life of ozone is considered, the highest value obtained was equivalent to 8.72 min for grains ozonated at 5 cm height, 10.6% (d.b.) moisture content and 2 L/min gas flow rate. In the process of ozone reaction rate in green gram grains, height (p < 0.01) and moisture content (p < 0.01) were found to be the key factor for the effectiveness of ozone fumigation. 相似文献
In this paper, the rotational transformation process is explained as a problem of rotation of remotely sensed data in the variance-covariance space. In particular, the rotation which maximizes the covariance-variance ratio is examined in detail for various land use and land cover classes in the Bombay suburban and Thana district area in India. A statistical approach to determine transformed components and other statistical variables on different band combinations is discussed.
