Recent advances in low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) have provided new opportunities for the investigation of the local geometric, electronic, magnetic, and optical properties of nanostructures. This review focuses on the presentation and discussion of single molecules, supramolecular assemblies, and other nanostructures; all research results obtained in our laboratory. The emphasis is directed to the observation of new effects, where the properties of matter at the nanoscale differ from those at the mesoscopic or macroscopic scale: small is different. This fact is illustrated for the conservation of chirality in a hierarchical supramolecular assembly of organic molecules and for local light emission from supported molecules. The sorption of three humic acids to 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine multilamellar vesicle model membrane systems was studied by phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance (31P NMR). The effects of temperature and pH were investigated. The gel --> bilayer transition did not appear to be affected by any of the humic acids at pH 7; however, all three humic acids induced a perturbation to this transition and to the bilayer structure at pH 4. On the basis of the findings from this and other work, a conceptual adsorption/absorption model for the sorption of humic acid (HA) to biomembranes has been put forward. The model requires an initial adsorption step initiated at an acidic pH by hydrogen bridging and electrostatic interactions between the functional groups of the HAs and the head groups of the phospholipids. Once the HA material is adsorbed, its hydrophobic domains can further seek a more thermodynamically favorable environment within the bilayer using hydrophobic interactions. These interactions lead to the HA being absorbed into the membrane, which subsequently induces the observed perturbation by disturbing the ordered packing of the phospholipid tail groups. Nanoscale patterning of gold layers on GaAs substrate is demonstrated using a combination of soft lithographic molding and galvanic displacement deposition. First, an electroless deposition method has been developed to plate gold on GaAs with ease and cost-effectiveness. The electroless metallization process is performed by dipping the GaAs substrates into a gold salt solution without any reducing agents or additives. The deposition proceeds via galvanic displacement in which gold ions in the aqueous solution are reduced by electrons arising from the GaAs substrate itself. The deposition rate, surface morphology and adhesion property can be modulated by the plating parameters such as the choice of acids and the immersion time. Second, soft lithographic patterning of nanodots, nanorings, and nanolines are demonstrated on GaAs substrates with hard-polydimethylsiloxane (h-PDMS) mold and plasma etching.
