In most countries of the world asphalt pavement of road networks represents the biggest single investment in the transportation system. In Canada, asphalt pavement built over the past decade is worth more than 70 billion dollars (in 1984 dollars). In order to maintain the current road network at the present level of service and prevent it from further deterioration, over 6 billion dollars is needed anually.
Traditionally, asphalt overlays are widely used to rehabilitate existing deteriorated pavements. Unfortunately the new overlays have been observed to fail in a relatively short time. Thus the investment in overlays is lost.
Recent research based on the concept of relative rigidity has indicated that the rapid deterioration of new asphalt overlays is directly related to current construction equipment. It has been shown analytically and experimentally that steel rollers used in compacting the asphalt layer will result in surface cracks during construction. Traffic and environmental influences will accelerate the failure of the new layer.
This paper presents the results of a testing programme evaluating the engineering properties of asphalt slabs compacted by a new method using a compactor termed AMIR. The results showed that the AMIR compactor will prevent the formation of constitution cracks resulting in an increase of indirect tensile strength of 10% and an increase of direct tensile strength of up to 60% when compared to steel roller compacted asphalt slabs. 相似文献
The large-scale utilization of solar energy will be facilitated by economical and efficient energy storage. The proposed energy storage systems have been critically reviewed, and capital cost estimates compared on a common basis. A model for sizing an energy storage system is proposed and used to determine the size range of practical interest. Based on selection criteria and relevant data two storage systems have been investigated: an all sodium system and a molten salt system. The design equations, cost estimates, and correlations indicate that, for the energy storage systems developed to date, in the capacity range of 700–2100 MWh, a molten salt, two-tank isolated-type system is the most cost effective and technically feasible for a solar, central receiver, hybrid cogeneration plant. At the extremes of the above range the unit capital cost for the molten salt storage system was found to be 22.8–26.7 $/kWh of stored energy, compared to 43.0–45.4 $/kWh for the sodium storage system. 相似文献
This article addresses two fundamental questions concerning cerebral lateralization of functions in normal, right-handed, non-brain-damaged children, namely: Does cerebral specialization develop from an initial bilateral representation to a progressively more focalized specialization, or does it follow an invariant model? And, do sex differences exist? The results from five experimental paradigms were reviewed, including (a) dichotic listening, (b) tachistoscopic viewing, (c) electroencephalography, (d) haptic identification, and (e) somatosensory discrimination. The results from these five paradigms indicated that linguistic functions are localized in the left hemisphere from birth for children of both sexes. The results for functions lateralized in the right hemisphere were less straightforward. Some tasks showed no developmental changes or sex differences, whereas other tasks showed both developmental changes and sex differences. However, factors other than functional brain asymmetries were found to affect the results, challenging the validity of each paradigm. Directions for future research are suggested. Adult rats that were isolated from the mother and nest for 1 hr per day from Postnatal Day 2 to 9 were studied. Controls consisted of handled littermates as well as separate litters that were never handled. As adults, animals were given either a pharmacological challenge (1.0 or 2.0 mg/kg amphetamine) or an environmental challenge (restraint). Previously isolated animals demonstrated increased activity compared to controls at both drug doses. Similarly, isolated animals manifested exaggerated inhibition of activity after restraint. Previously isolated animals usually did not show differences compared to controls under baseline conditions (saline injection or no restraint). Three multimethod studies (total N?=?348) probed the hypothesis that women's attraction to men would be influenced by male prosocial orientation. In Study 1, prosocial men were rated as more physically and sexually attractive, socially desirable, and desirable as dates than were nonprosocial men. Dominant men were no more attractive than low-dominance men, and male dominance did not interact with male prosocial orientation in eliciting attraction from women. In Study 2, prosocial orientation was manipulated to avoid "personalism," but still affected attraction. Across all measures attraction was an interactive function of dominance and prosocial tendencies. Dominance alone did not increase any form of attraction measured. In Study 3, male prosocial tendencies and dominance interacted to affect women's attraction to men. A study was undertaken to examine the sensitivity of a wastewater population of coliphage, total coliforms and total flora present in raw sewage and secondary effluent after irradiating with similar doses delivered by a high-energy electron beam and y -radiation. The electron beam study was conducted on a large scale at the Virginia Key Wastewater Treatment Plant, Miami, Fla. The facility is equipped with a 1.5 MeV, 50 mA electron accelerator, with a wastewater flow rate of 8 ls−1. Concurrent y-radiation studies were conducted at laboratory scale using a 5000 Ci, 60Co y -source. Three logs reduction of all three test organisms were observed at an electron beam dose of 500 krads, while at least four logs reduction were observed at the same dose utilizing the y-source. 相似文献
This article reports strong correlations between reuse levels of software products across the life cycle and presents models of reuse levels across the life cycle. These models can be used to estimate reuse levels of one life cycle object given reuse levels of others, or to predict reuse levels of later life cycle objects given reuse levels of earlier ones. The models have been developed from survey data collected from 113 respondents from 29 organizations about their own and their organizations' levels of reuse of life cycle objects. Usage scenarios for the models are presented, as are methods for customizing and improving the models. 相似文献
A finite-difference numerical method of solution for the unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using primitive variables is presented. The rate form of the equation of state is used for the calculation of pressure. This form of the equation of state is well-suited for use with the unsteady form of the conservation equations (mass, momentum and energy). An implicit algorithm is used for the time integration for greater numerical stability. This method is used to solve a known benchmark problem in steady-state natural convection as a test of steady-state accuracy. The results of the simulation are compared to the benchmark. 相似文献
Attrition from conditions in randomized experiments is common. Yet it is difficult to assess the possible effects of attrition because the outcome status of the dropouts is usually unknown. This article develops methods to assess those effects in studies with dichotomous outcomes, illustrating the methods with randomized experiments in drug abuse treatment, smoking cessation treatment, and alcoholism treatment. The methods include computing the lowest and highest possible effect sizes that could have been observed, enumerating the percent of possible study outcomes below a given threshold, estimating the probability that an outcome beyond any given threshold would be observed if all participants were measured, and constructing attrition analysis plots showing the effects of attrition under varied assumptions. For the kind of study to which they apply, these methods should replace the treatment of missing participants as failures in an "intent-to-treat" analysis. Eutrophication of Lake Victoria led to changes in its phytoplankton communities. However, different levels of eutrophication exist in the open lake and the bays, and between embayments. This study utilized spatial and temporal sampling of Napoleon Gulf and Murchison Bay, exhibiting different trophic conditions. Over one year, we investigated phytoplankton biomass, richness, diversity and dissimilarity, and related the dynamics of the dominant species to the limnological and climatic conditions. The results confirmed that Napoleon Gulf and Murchison Bay showed large differences in eutrophication status, with lower nutrient concentrations in Napoleon Gulf than in Murchison Bay, where a strong gradient was observed from inshore to offshore areas. These nutrient dynamics resulted in a 4 to 10 fold higher chlorophyll-a in Murchison Bay than in Napoleon Gulf. From the embayments, 135 phytoplankton taxa were recorded with no significant differences in alpha diversity. However, high dissimilarity in community structure was observed in beta diversity, mostly due to a turnover among the dominant toxigenic species. Thus, from a similar species pool, there was a shift in the dominant toxigenic cyanobacteria from Microcystis flos-aquae and M. aeruginosa in Murchison Bay, Dolichospermum circinale and Planktolyngbya circumcreta in Napoleon Gulf to D. circinale in the offshore stations. These cyanobacteria are toxigenic taxa with known health hazards. Using partial least square models, we showed that both climatic variables (e.g. wind, solar radiation) and levels of inorganic dissolved nutrients (e.g. SRP, NO3–, and NH4+) are the main drivers of differences and dominance in cyanobacteria communities in northern Lake Victoria. 相似文献
