Extralobar pulmonary sequestration mimicking cystic adenomatoid malformation in prenatal sonographic appearance and histological findings

An infant girl with extralobar pulmonary sequestration (PS) composed of congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM)-like structure is presented. Initially, the antenatal sonographic findings indicated CCAM. The macroscopic findings of the resected specimen were compatible with extralobar PS; however, the microscopic findings showed cystic structure mimicking type II CCAM. The combination of PS and CCAM is rare, and it is likely that the embryological origin is common to both. There is confusion in the classification of these two congenital anomalies. In this report, the histological and sonographic findings of PS and CCAM are discussed.     

Phase I clinical study of oxaliplatin

Oxaliplatin is a new platinum derivative. A multicentric phase I study was conducted with a monotherapy of Oxaliplatin. A total of 20 patients were enrolled who had histologically proven 6 ovarian cancers, 5 uterine cervix cancers, 3 lung cancers, 3 breast cancers, 1 endometrial cancer, 1 gastric cancer, and 1 colorectal cancer. Oxaliplatin was administered as a 2-hour infusion at doses of 20, 40, 80, 130, and 180 mg/m2 every 3 weeks, for a total of 30 cycles. A dose-related and reversible peripheral sensory neuropathy was the dose-limiting toxicity with minimal hematotoxicity and no nephrotoxicity. No hydration was needed. The plasma platinum concentration was biphasically decreased. Cmax and AUC were dose-dependent. T1/2 beta was 31.3 hours. The recommended dose for further studies was 130 mg/m2. A partial response was observed in endometrial cancer.     

Host-dependent activation of IS1203v excision in Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli

IS1203v is an insertion sequence (IS) which is identical to the most abundant IS elements in the genome of Escherichia coli O157:H7. However, there is no sequence homologous to IS1203v in the genome of E. coli K-12. We constructed a system to analyze the excision frequency of IS1203v, and demonstrated that the frequency in E. coli O157:H7 was approximately 10(5) times higher than that in E. coli K-12. We also investigated the excision frequencies of IS1203v in various E. coli isolates, and showed that the excision frequencies of IS1203v-possessing strains were approximately 10(3) times higher than those of IS1203v-nonpossessing strains. The results suggest that the IS1203v-possessing strains use a common system to enhance IS1203v excision.     

Thermal Diffusivity Measurement of Isotopically Enriched 28-Si Single Crystal by Dynamic Grating Radiometry

In the past decade it has been suggested that the isotopic enrichment of 28-silicon enhances its thermal properties. Thus, 28-silicon is suitable as a heat sink in large-scale integrated circuits. Although some studies have focused on the measurement of isotopically enriched silicon's thermal properties, accurate experimental data are not sufficient because of this material's high conductivity and large heat capacity which make measurement difficult. However, the dynamic grating radiometry (DGR) method has been successfully developed to measure the thermal diffusivity of 28-silicon. In the DGR method, the sample is heated by interference of two pulsed laser beams, and the temperature decay is monitored by an infrared detector. By analyzing the temperature changes of the peaks and valleys of the thermal grating, the thermal diffusivities parallel and perpendicular to the sample surface are obtained simultaneously. In this paper, the optimum conditions of the experimental setup for measuring isotopically enriched silicon are discussed. The comparison of thermal diffusivities between 28-silicon and natural silicon (with a thickness of about 100m) is presented, and the applicability of DGR to isotope engineering is reported.     

Hiding an image with a light-scattering medium and use of a contrast-discrimination method for readout

Hiding image data with a material such as a light-scattering medium is useful as an initial stage of data protection, because the hidden image can be detected only by observation with a specific technique. A light-scattering medium is used to hide the image data, and a low-temporal-coherence interferometer performs the readout processing. A new readout method for detecting pixel values of the image is proposed to overcome spatial variation of the light intensity and distortion of the interference fringes. The introduction of spatial coding further improves the performance by overcoming spatial variations of the light-scattering medium and variations in the reflectance of given pixels.     

Modification of cleanup methods for dioxin analysis in green leafy vegetables and comparison of packing methods for a multi-layer silica gel column

To determine polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (Co-PCBs) in green leafy vegetables, the cleanup method was modified, and packing methods for a multi-layer silica gel column were compared in food samples. First, the additional cleanup was examined for a mono-ortho PCBs fraction obtained by alumina column chromatography from spinach extract. Small solids such as rough crystals that remained after concentration of the mono-ortho PCBs fraction were identified as long-chain hydrocarbons from leaf epicuticular wax by GC/MS. Cleanup using an activated carbon silica gel column with n-hexane as the washing solvent was effective. Next, multi-layer silica gel columns packed by wet packing and dry packing were compared using komatsuna, salmon and butter as samples. The columns prepared by both methods gave similar values at each isomeric concentration level and showed similar efficiency with favorable recoveries.     

All-optical wavelength conversion in a GaInAsP/InP optical gate loaded with a Bragg reflector

All-optical wavelength conversion employing a GaInAsP/InP nonlinear distributed-feedback waveguide switch is investigated. The device has the advantages of simple structure, compactness, polarity-noninverted operation, and feasibility of integration with other photonic devices such as semiconductor optical amplifier and modulators. We show that the device exhibits constant conversion efficiency around -9.2 dB in a signal-wavelength range of 1530-1560 nm. Furthermore, this device can potentially be made polarization independent.     

Determination of standard gibbs energies of formation of Cr2N and CrN
